Abstract

Early childhood, especially from birth to age six, is a foundational phase often described as the “golden age” of human development, when rapid brain growth and learning potential are at their peak. During this critical stage, parenting plays a pivotal role in shaping children's cognitive, emotional, social, and moral development. However, in many contexts, including in Indonesia, parents often face challenges due to a lack of parenting knowledge, limited access to educational resources, and socio-cultural barriers. In response to these challenges, this community service program was conducted at Al-Fatah Kindergarten in Ambon with the aim of enhancing parental understanding of early childhood development and increasing awareness of the significance of their role as primary educators. The program employed a two-day interactive workshop approach, featuring themes on parenting for Generation Alpha and holistic child development. The sessions were delivered through participatory methods, including lectures, focus group discussions, real-life case sharing, and direct consultation with parenting experts. Results showed increased parental awareness and understanding of their role in child development, particularly regarding the impact of parenting styles, screen time management, emotional support, and developmental stimulation. The initiative also fostered a stronger school–community relationship and positioned the kindergarten as a collaborative center for parenting education. The success of the program illustrates that school-based parenting education, when delivered in culturally sensitive and engaging formats, can effectively bridge knowledge gaps and support families in providing nurturing, responsive, and developmentally appropriate care for their children. The findings reinforce the need for sustainable, community-driven models of parenting education that empower parents as active contributors to lifelong learning and early childhood success.

Abstract

The women's empowerment program implemented by the Women’s Ministry Group (WPP) of the GPM Hatiwe Besar Congregation aims to address the lack of innovation in processing sago flour into economically valuable food products. Sago, a traditional staple in Maluku, has mostly been used in conventional forms and has not yet been developed into attractive, competitive food products. In response, the community engagement team conducted a culinary training focused on creating chocolate ganache sago porridge as a potential local souvenir product. The training consisted of two sessions: a presentation on tools, ingredients, and preparation steps, followed by hands-on practice. An interactive lecture method was combined with demonstrations to increase participant engagement and understanding. Evaluation showed a significant improvement in technical skills, self-confidence, and collaborative spirit among participants. This program is expected to spark culinary innovation based on sago, strengthen family economic independence, and promote the sustainable use of local resources.

Abstract

Early childhood education is a crucial foundation for developing human resources from an early age. However, disparities in teacher competence and limited community involvement remain major challenges in achieving quality early education in Ambon City. This community service aimed to enhance teacher capacity and strengthen community roles through a locally based collaborative empowerment model. The method applied was Participatory Action Research (PAR), involving teachers, parents, and community leaders in cycles of planning, action, reflection, and evaluation. The findings revealed a significant improvement in teachers’ ability to design contextual learning (92%), greater parental engagement in school activities (87%), and the formation of sustainable inter-PAUD learning communities across five districts. The program produced an effective participatory empowerment model aligned with local characteristics and direct social impact. Its implication highlights that such collaboration can be replicated to support community-based education policies in other island regions.
