Abstract

Improving listening skills can be done from various learning media; one of them is movies. Movies provide audio and visual, making students convey the meaning of the language while watching. One of the most difficult skills to master is listening. In order to have better skills in listening, students need learning media to improve their listening skills. This study aimed to examine the students' habit in watching English Movies at an English Language Education Department (ELED) of a Private Islamic University in Yogyakarta, the students' listening skill at the ELED of a Private Islamic University in Yogyakarta, and the correlation between the students’ habit in watching English movies and their listening skills. This research was conducted at an ELED of a Private Islamic University in Yogyakarta. Quantitative approach with correlational design was employed in this study. The study included 185 ELED Batch 2018 students and used a convenience sample technique. A questionnaire and the listening TOEFL test score were used to collect the data. The Pearson Product Moment Correlation test was used to compute and analyze the scores from both data, and SPSS v.26 was used to perform the correlation. Moreover, the result revealed that probability value was 0.389 which means that the probability value is higher than 0.05 (0.389>0.05) and it implied that alternative hypothesis was rejected. It means that there was no significant correlation between the two variables, the students’ habit in watching English movies and their listening skills. It can be inferred that if the students have a good habit in watching English movies, it does not mean that their listening skills are also good

Abstract

Understanding conversation analysis (CA) in a K-pop interview setting offers valuable insights into how multilingual speakers manage turn-taking, negotiate meaning, and engage in structured dialogue within a media context. This study examines the interactional patterns in an interview between Kevan Kenney and the K-pop idol group NCT127 on the BUILD talk show. Using a Conversation Analysis (CA) approach, this research aims to identify the CA aspects that emerge during the interview and to explore their communicative functions. A qualitative approach, specifically a descriptive qualitative method, was employed to analyze the primary data, which consisted of a video interview and its conversational transcript. The findings reveal the presence of key CA elements, including opening conversation, adjacency pairs, preference organization, turn-taking, feedback, repair, and closing conversation. Additionally, six communicative functions—referential, emotive, conative, phatic, metalinguistic, and poetic—were identified. These results highlight the structured nature of conversation in media interviews and the role of language functions in shaping interaction, particularly in cross-cultural and multilingual settings. By analyzing this interaction, the study contributes to the broader field of discourse analysis, particularly in media and intercultural communication.

Abstract

Turn-taking plays a vital role in managing and structuring conversations, making it especially important in both everyday interactions and educational environments. While much research has explored turn-taking in classroom or casual settings, limited attention has been given to how it operates in bilingual or multilingual media interviews. This study seeks to fill that gap by examining the turn-taking strategies used during interviews between Jimmy Fallon and K-Pop Idol BTS (Bangtan Sonyeondan), a globally recognized Korean boy band, on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. Employing a qualitative method, the study analyzed three interview videos through transcription and manual coding, guided by Stenstrom’s framework of turn-taking strategies. The analysis identified three main strategies: Taking the Turn (TTS), Holding the Turn (HTS), and Yielding the Turn (YTS). Among these, Taking the Turn (TTS) emerged as the most dominant, appearing in 47% of instances—emphasizing its key role in shaping the dynamic flow of K-Pop Idol interviews. These findings offer valuable insights for language learners and educators by demonstrating authentic conversational strategies in multilingual contexts. Furthermore, these findings may also serve as practical references for media professionals and interviewers aiming to manage turn-taking more effectively during live interactions.

Abstract

Learning media are important parts of the teaching and learning process. Using Canva as a tool for creating English learning media is one of the ways EFL students can do when preparing their teaching and learning practices. This study investigates EFL students’ perceptions of the kinds of English learning media created by the EFL students using Canva and the benefits of using Canva as a tool for creating English learning media as perceived by these students. The researchers employed a descriptive qualitative design to achieve the objectives of this study. This study was conducted at a large private university in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. The participants in this study were six EFL students from the 2019 batch. The researchers conducted interviews to gather in-depth experiences of the participants. The findings of this study indicate that EFL students have created seven different types of English learning media using Canva. The English learning media created by EFL students were presentation slides, textbooks, flashcards, video learning, Instagram content, Infographics, and Twibbons. The findings also elaborate on several benefits of using Canva to create English learning media as perceived by the EFL students. The benefits are that Canva is easy to use, provides various templates for various learning media, caters to EFL students’ creativity, saves time for the EFL students in creating teaching media, and allows EFL students to create fun multimodal learning media.

Abstract

ABSTRACTThis preliminary study explores external motivation in L2 extensive reading regarding word-target and pleasure reading. In contrast to the extensive reading principle which discourages the use of assessment to promote pleasure in reading, this study aims to explore how reading targets as one form of assessment is potential to maintain pleasure in reading. This qualitative study was conducted in the Department of Arabic Education at an Islamic private university in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. Two reading classes for first-year students were observed. The data were collected from observation, interviews, and students’ reading profiles as recorded in XReading, a learning management system supporting students’ reading practice. The results show that the students use the reading target as an external drive to read and XReading allows students to choose the texts according to their preference and within their linguistic capacity, which instills pleasure in reading. The findings also suggest that a periodical goal and regular teacher monitoring will motivate students to sustain their reading progress. How to Cite:  Paradita, L.I, Surwanti, D., Hunafa, N..
