Abstract

Dendrobium orchid seedlings transferred from in vitro culture require stable microclimate conditions during acclimatization, particularly temperature, humidity, and photoperiod regulation, to improve adaptation to non-aseptic environments. However, quantitative evaluations of laboratory-scale incubation systems under constrained actuation conditions remain limited. This study presents a compact microclimate incubation system implementing proportional-only temperature control using fan-based unidirectional cooling, scheduled irrigation and lighting, and real-time IoT monitoring through a Node-RED dashboard. The system was developed using an ESP32-S3 controller and DHT22 sensors in a semi-enclosed multi-tier rack with a capacity of 360 seedling pots. Sensor calibration showed strong agreement with a reference instrument, achieving R² > 0.99 for temperature and humidity measurements. Temperature regulation at a reference value of 29.3 °C achieved a steady-state mean absolute error of 0.1 °C within a deviation range of −0.5 to +0.1 °C during 572 minutes of continuous operation, while maintaining all measurements within ±2 °C of the thermal tolerance range for Dendrobium acclimatization. Increasing proportional gain from  = 1000 to 2550 reduced the reference entry time from 362 s to 208 s. These findings demonstrate that proportional-only control with constrained cooling actuation can provide stable temperature regulation for compact indoor incubation systems.

Abstract

Bucephalandra sp. is a high-value aquatic ornamental plant whose cultivation in tropical climates such as Lampung is constrained by ambient temperatures that frequently exceed the 22 to 28 °C physiological range. Existing IoT and control studies for plant environments focus predominantly on common horticultural crops; the combination of ebb-and-flow subirrigation, closed-loop thermal control, and edge-node IoT monitoring on a single embedded platform remains unreported for this species. This study designed and evaluated an IoT-enabled ebb-and-flow cultivation system for Bucephalandra sp. on an ESP32-S3, integrating proportional fan ventilation control at a 26 °C setpoint with RTC-scheduled flood-drain cycling and Node-RED monitoring on a Jetson Nano edge node. After linear-regression calibration, the DHT22 achieved 99.16 % temperature accuracy and 96.14 % humidity accuracy; the DS18B20 achieved 99.22 % water-temperature accuracy. The optimal controller configuration (Kp = 500) produced 1.54 % overshoot without sustained oscillation. The flood-drain schedule maintained timing within 1 to 2 s of the reference clock, and HTTP telemetry to Google Sheets achieved 99.4 % packet storage success. One-month seedling survival of 95.9 % (209/218) indicates that the integrated platform sustained viable cultivation conditions under the tested configuration

Abstract

Pure sine wave (PSW) inverters based on two-stage SG3525 push-pull and EGS002 sinusoidal pulse width modulation (SPWM) topologies are commonly used in battery-sourced off-grid agricultural systems, but their load-resolved performance under LED growlight loading remains insufficiently characterized. This study aimed to design, fabricate, and experimentally evaluate a two-stage single-phase PSW inverter supplied by a 12 V lead-acid battery. The first stage used an SG3525-driven push-pull DC-DC converter operating at 35 kHz with an ETD42 ferrite-core transformer to generate a 380 V DC bus. The second stage used an EGS002 SPWM module driving an IRF460 H-bridge and LC output filter to produce a 220 V, 50 Hz AC output. Efficiency testing was performed at eleven nominal LED growlight load points from 0 W to 500 W. At each point, input-output electrical quantities, waveform parameters, and operating temperature were recorded after steady-state operation. The inverter reached a peak efficiency of 87.80% at the 300 W nominal LED rating, while the 250–300 W range maintained efficiency above 84%. Mean waveform amplitude error relative to the theoretical sinusoidal reference was 1.59%, voltage regulation was 2.52%, and output frequency remained stable at 50 Hz. Operating temperature increased from 27°C at no load to 34°C at the 500 W nominal LED rating. These results indicate that the inverter is suitable for LED-driver-based growlight loading within the characterized operating range and provides baseline data for future component-level thermal evaluation.
