Abstract

One of the effects of industrial development in plantation is the development in shipping and trade. Before the existence of plantations in East Sumatera, shipping and trade in Medan were centered at Labuhan Deli, as a river seaport. Periodically, shipping and trade activities at Labuhan Deli were in export and import from and to Malaya Peninsula (Penang and Malacca) and Singapore. The growth of plantations, of course, needed effective and efficient transportation. After the economy grew and was developed, Labuhan Deli as a river seaport was considered not effective and efficient anymore since ships with large cargoes could not sail on the river. Therefore, the Netherlands East Indies Government made a policy to build a new seaport which was located by the seaside in order to make loading and unloading goods easier. The Netherlands East Indies Government finally selected Belawan to be a new seaport for Medan. The research problems were as follows: how was the existence of Labuhan Deli by the policy of the Netherlands East Indies Government in moving the seaport to Belawan and what was the reason? How were the shipping and trade in Belawan seaport? These questions would be discussed in this research by using archives as the source and several writings published in Medan during the Dutch colonial period. The objective of the research was to describe the economic condition of the plantations which could change various aspects, specifically in shipping and trade. The research used historical research method which largely used archives from the Dutch colonial period, especially the statistics of shipping and trade, and the reports from BOW (Public Works Agency).

The findings showed the global meaning of Hillary’s tweets is equal right for transgender people or community. From the analysis of superstructure there are three types of structure found (argumentative, narrative, and descriptive). In microstructure analysis, there are four elements of semantics found (setting, detail, intent, and prejudice) and five elements of syntax (pronouns, cohesion, substitution, references, and conjunction). Scheme of event, self-scheme, and role-scheme were found in the social cognition analysis to provide arguments to support transgender community. Access of media, social elites, political elites, and transgender people were found in the social context analysis.

Abstract

In order to produce a good argumentative text that is easy for readers to understand, a skill is needed, one of which is writing skills. With the skill of writing argumentative texts, someone can develop critical thinking skills. In compiling an argument, someone must be able to analyze information, evaluate various points of view, and compile logical and consistent arguments. The partners involved in this program are students at SMA Imelda Medan where the main problem experienced by the partners is the lack of understanding of students in writing argumentative texts. Students can write this text but still do not meet the standards of argumentative texts such as the inability to identify a clear position or thesis, lack of logical reasoning, inability to structure the writing clearly. Therefore, the solution offered is to provide training in writing the text using a theme development approach. The location of this program is at SMA Imelda Medan which is located at Jl. Bilal, Medan, North Sumatra. This program consists of stages of preparation, implementation, monitoring, and evaluation. In implementing this community service, the team applied the in-house training method using a theme development approach. The students showed high enthusiasm in participating in the entire series of argumentative text writing training activities. The results of students' writing after the training showed an increase in the aspects of argument clarity, use of relevant evidence, and coherent paragraph arrangement. This success shows that the training was able to provide a positive impact in improving students' literacy skills in writing argumentative texts.
