Abstract

Botany plays a crucial role in shaping students’ understanding of biodiversity and its relevance to daily life. However, theoretical approaches often create a disconnect between scientific knowledge and its real-world application. This study aimed to assess the effectiveness of practice-based ethnobotany learning in enhancing students’ biological understanding, cultural awareness, and critical thinking skills. Using a qualitative descriptive approach combined with experiential learning methods, data were collected through direct observation of Zingiberaceae species, semi-structured interviews with local communities on plant uses, scientific literature reviews on pharmacological benefits, and visual documentation. The findings revealed that this approach strengthened students’ grasp of plant taxonomy, conservation values, and local wisdom. Students successfully identified various species such as Curcuma domestica, Zingiber officinale, and others, along with their traditional health and environmental benefits. Additionally, the learning process significantly improved students' critical thinking and self-efficacy in applying acquired knowledge. The results emphasize that real-world experiences enhance theoretical understanding and foster ecological awareness. This study suggests that ethnobotany education grounded in field practice should be more widely implemented in higher education, especially in biology and environmental science. Integrating this approach supports not only academic achievement but also character development, cultural preservation, and sustainable development in response to 21st-century educational challenges.

Abstract

Perkembangan signifikan di dunia pendidikan pada abad ke-21 tercermin dalam dampak positif dari kemajuan teknologi dan interaksi lintas sektor. Kunci pentingnya literasi sains adalah pada kemampuan individu dalam memanfaatkan informasi ilmiah, mengidentifikasi pertanyaan yang relevan, dan mengambil kesimpulan berdasarkan bukti-bukti ilmiah. Penelitian ini mengulas kemampuan literasi sains siswa pada konten Biologi SMA di Kota Sungai Penuh, Indonesia, dengan fokus pada perbedaan antara mereka yang mengikuti pembinaan KSN (Kompetisi Sains Nasional) dan yang tidak. Populasi penelitian adalah siswa SMA Kota Sungai Penuh dengan sampel berjumlah 230 siswa. Analisis data dilakukan dengan statistik deskriptif menggunakan aplikasi JASP seri 0.18. Hasil Penelitian menunjukkan bahwa siswa peserta pembinaan KSN memiliki rata-rata skor literasi sains pada konten Biologi sebesar 80,125 dan siswa yang bukan peserta pembinaan KSN memiliki rata-rata skor literasi sains pada konten biologi sebesar 72,696. Berdasarkan hasil penelitian, siswa peserta pembinaan KSN memiliki rata-rata skor literasi sains pada konten yang lebih  tinggi dibandingkan siswa yang bukan peserta pembinaan KSN.

Abstract

Banana cake is a type of processed food found among the people in Air Bungkal Village, Hamparan Rawang District, Sungai Penuh City which has developed into a business that can be used as a source of income. The purpose of this study is to analyze and transform the original knowledge of a group or community into scientific knowledge with the concept of science so that it can be a learning medium in biology learning in the community of Air Bungkal Village, Hamparan Rawang District, Sungai Penuh City. The method used in this study is a qualitative method with an exploratory approach with a research flow, namely observation, interviews, and documentation carried out in depth. The results of the study showed that there were several stages in the process of making bananas, starting from the selection of raw materials, processing raw materials, mixing, printing, baking, cutting, decorating with candied fruit, and packaging. The process of processing bananas into banana cakes transforming community knowledge into scientific knowledge with the concept of science can be used as a learning medium in biology that can be implemented for further research.

Abstract

Abstrak Emosi siswa merupakan komponen penting aktivitas dan hasil pembelajaran yang diikuti di sekolah. Tujuan dari penelitian ini yaitu untuk menganalisis emosi siswa dalam pembelajaran. Penelitian dilaksanakan di SMAN 4 Sungai Penuh dan MAN 2 Kerinci dengan sampel sebanyak 89 siswa. Penelitian menerapkan metode deskriptif dan komparatif. Secara deskriptif untuk menggambarkan dan menganalisis emosi siswa. Selanjutnya membandingkan kondisi emosi siswa antara dua sekolah yang berbeda menggunakan t-test. Achievement Emotions Questionnaire digunakan sebagai instrumen penelitian yang terdiri dari 80 pernyataan mengenai emosi negatif sebelum, saat, dan setelah mengikuti pembelajaran. Hasil analisis menunjukkan rata-rata skor emosi negatif siswa untuk setiap indikator berada dalam kategori sedang, yaitu sebelum pembelajaran (2.37), saat pembelajaran  (2.76), dan setelah pembelajaran (2.61). Emosi negatif siswa ditemukan paling tinggi ketika mereka mengikuti pembelajaran. Menariknya, emosi negatif ditemukan lebih tinggi setelah mengikuti pembelajaran dibandingkan sebelum mengikuti pembelajaran. Selanjutnya hasil t-test ( ) menunjukkan bahwa tidak terdapat perbedaan emosi yang signifikan antara siswa dari sekolah yang berbeda. Namun penelusuran lebih lanjut berdasarkan indikator/kondisi pembelajaran menunjukkan bahwa emosi negatif siswa berbeda secara signifikan sebelum pembelajaran. Perbedaan muncul karena adanya perbedaan harapan, keyakinan, dan kesiapan siswa dari dua sebelum mengikuti pembelajaran. Penelusuran lebih lanjut diperlukan untuk memahami sebab-akibat, dinamika, dan solusi untuk emosi negatif  sebelum pembelajaran.

Abstract

This study aims to identify and analyze students' perceptions of the implementation of environmentally oriented biology learning at SMAN 7 Kerinci. The study used a qualitative approach with a descriptive-exploratory design to deeply explore students' views, experiences, and responses to learning that integrates environmental issues. The research subjects consisted of 10th-grade students selected through purposive sampling technique based on their active involvement in environmentally related biology learning. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews, observation, and documentation, then analyzed using the interactive analysis model of Miles, Huberman, and Saldaña which includes data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The results showed that students had positive perceptions of environmentally oriented biology learning, especially in improving understanding of environmental concepts, ecological awareness, and caring attitudes towards environmental sustainability. Students also showed higher interest and motivation in learning when biology material was linked to real environmental problems around them. However, several obstacles were still encountered such as limited learning resources and supporting facilities. Overall, this study concluded that environmentally oriented biology learning has the potential to be a strategic approach in shaping students' knowledge, attitudes, and pro-environmental behavior and supporting the strengthening of sustainable education in schools.
