Abstract

This study aims to identify and analyze leading commodities in the aquaculture sector of Riau Province, using the Location Quotient (LQ), Shift Share, and Klassen Typology approaches. The analysis was conducted on aquaculture production data from 2019 to 2023 to identify commodities with the greatest potential and optimal contribution to the regional economy. The results show that the leading commodities in Riau Province are pangas catfish (Pangasianodon hypophthalmus) and catfish (Clarias gariepinus), both of which have an LQ value greater than 1, indicating that they are basic commodities with high competitiveness at the provincial level. Meanwhile, commodities such as carp (Cyprinus carpio L), Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus), giant goramy (Osphronemus goramy), vaname shrimp (Litopenaeus vannamei), and milkfish (Chanos chanos), despite production fluctuations, still require more efficient management to improve their competitiveness. Based on the shift-share analysis, catfish and tilapia contribute positively and significantly to the growth of the aquaculture sector in Riau Province. Furthermore, the Klassen Typology analysis shows that pangas catfish and catfish fall into the "Advancing and Growing Rapidly" quadrant, while other commodities are in the "Potential or Rapidly Developing" quadrant. This study concludes that the aquaculture sector in Riau Province has great potential for development, particularly for catfish and tilapia, which can be strengthened through improvements in infrastructure, aquaculture technology, and commodity diversification to reduce production fluctuations. Improvement of infrastructure, aquaculture technology, commodity diversification, and farmer training can enhance productivity, quality, and market competitiveness both domestically and internationally in a sustainable manner

Abstract

The availability of bivalve spat has a strategic role in ensuring the sustainability of bivalve communities in aquatic ecosystems. This study aims to determine the species, abundance, and timing of bivalve spat settled on the basic substrate of mangrove forest in the intertidal zone of Rupat Island. This research was conducted in June - October 2017. The research was located in the intertidal zone, which is divided into three subzones: upper, middle, and lower. To collect spat bivalve using a net collector, like a tray. This research method was a survey method. The results showed that the bivalve spat had three types: Pilsbryoconcha exilis spat, Polymesoda expansa, and Pharella acutidens. The average abundance is 4.06 ind/m2; the highest abundance of bivalve spats was at the lower subzone, 2.13 ind/m2. The lower subzone was adjacent to the sea and was affected by the tides. From the monthly sampling, October was the highest, with an average abundance of 1.2 ind/m2. Spat catches in June-October were low, and the possibility of a recruit peak of bivalve spat had not happened yet.

Abstract

This community service program aims to improve farmers' knowledge and skills in cultivating chili plants and preventing geminivirus infection, a major constraint in production. The activity was carried out through outreach activities covering the stages of land cultivation, virus infection prevention techniques, whitefly population control as a vector, land clearing of weeds that are hosts of geminivirus, sanitation of infected plants, and proper pesticide use. In addition, participants were also introduced to the use of chili varieties resistant to the yellow geminivirus as an alternative sustainable solution. The results of the activity showed an increase in farmers' understanding of healthy cultivation strategies and integrated pest control, with an average score increasing from 45% to 85%, with the vector control aspect increasing from 30% to 90%. This outreach is expected to reduce the level of virus infection and increase chili productivity.

Abstract

Coffee consumption continues to rise in step with growing interest in functional beverages. KOPI-PRO is a coffee product containing protein produced through fermentation by probiotic microorganisms and has undergone challenge tests against pathogenic bacteria such as Pseudomonas sp., Aeromonas sp., and Vibrio alginolyticus. This community engagement program aims to foster entrepreneurship among the academic community of the University of Riau by developing probiotic coffee (KOPI-PRO) as both a healthy product innovation and a pilot for a sustainable business strategy. Activities included outreach and production training, limited market trials, a consumer satisfaction survey (n = 39), and a business feasibility assessment. Results showed that four students chose to continue the KOPI-PRO venture; consumer ratings of taste, texture, and aroma ranged from “like” to “strongly like,” with the most favored variants including Orange Latte, Original, and Palm Sugar Latte. Financially, the venture was feasible (R/C > 1) with an estimated payback period of about four months. This program demonstrates that a simple, measurable, biotechnology-based service model is effective in cultivating students’ entrepreneurial interest and is readily replicable in campus and community settings.
