Abstract

Relations between humans and social groups always involve power. Power exists in all fields of life; it includes the ability to govern and also make decisions that directly influence the actions of others. This study aims to determine how social interaction and power practices between the crew and shipowner; and between crews on small vessels. This research was conducted with a descriptive-qualitative approach using a case study strategy. The study was conducted in Muarareja Urban Village, West Tegal Subdistrict, Tegal City, Central Java Province. The results showed that small scale fishers in Muarareja Urban Village, Tegal City can be categorized as daily fishers and weekly fishers. The practice of power between the owner and the daily crew on the small vessels has an exploitative relationship dimension. This relationship is indicated by the compulsion of the shipowner to the crew to keep fishing even though the weather is bad or during a low season. The practice of power between the shipowner and the crew was strongly influenced by the shipowner's debt to the Bank or middleman, which must be paid every month. On the other hand, the practice of power exercised by the weekly fishers to the shipowner is by being able to resign and choose to work with other shipowners easily. If the crew feels uncomfortable working on a ship, they will look for a new shipowner.

Abstract

The objectives of this study are to examine the main issue that provoke social movement of fishermen in West Sumatra, to identify the related actors, and to analyze the advocacy strategy carried out by fishermen. This research was conducted in July 2019 and took place in two locations, namely the City of Padang and West Pasaman Regency. The study used qualitative approach. From this study, it is revealed that the main issue that provoke social movements in West Sumatra was the issue of Regulation No. 71 of 2016 by the Minister of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries related to the prohibition of certain fishing gear. This regulation prohibits the use of 4 mm mesh size of the net and the use of lamps in operating the liftnet which reaches up to 25-30 thousand watts of power. This regulation has created a huge burden to fisherman’s work. The Other issue that is also triggering the movement was the arrestment of 6 fishing boats on June 11, 2016. Meanwhile, the main actors who are directly related to this movement are fishermen who are using liftnet (bagan). These actors can be divided into two main categories, namely movers and "participants". The main tactic used in social movements was demonstration.

Abstract

This study aims to identify and analyze leading commodities in the aquaculture sector of Riau Province, using the Location Quotient (LQ), Shift Share, and Klassen Typology approaches. The analysis was conducted on aquaculture production data from 2019 to 2023 to identify commodities with the greatest potential and optimal contribution to the regional economy. The results show that the leading commodities in Riau Province are pangas catfish (Pangasianodon hypophthalmus) and catfish (Clarias gariepinus), both of which have an LQ value greater than 1, indicating that they are basic commodities with high competitiveness at the provincial level. Meanwhile, commodities such as carp (Cyprinus carpio L), Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus), giant goramy (Osphronemus goramy), vaname shrimp (Litopenaeus vannamei), and milkfish (Chanos chanos), despite production fluctuations, still require more efficient management to improve their competitiveness. Based on the shift-share analysis, catfish and tilapia contribute positively and significantly to the growth of the aquaculture sector in Riau Province. Furthermore, the Klassen Typology analysis shows that pangas catfish and catfish fall into the "Advancing and Growing Rapidly" quadrant, while other commodities are in the "Potential or Rapidly Developing" quadrant. This study concludes that the aquaculture sector in Riau Province has great potential for development, particularly for catfish and tilapia, which can be strengthened through improvements in infrastructure, aquaculture technology, and commodity diversification to reduce production fluctuations. Improvement of infrastructure, aquaculture technology, commodity diversification, and farmer training can enhance productivity, quality, and market competitiveness both domestically and internationally in a sustainable manner

Abstract

This study examines the social and economic changes in Pesisir Selatan, West Sumatra fishing communities, which have undergone transformation due to technological developments and market dynamics. The characteristics of fishermen in this area, who are generally still traditional, use small boats and simple fishing gear, have low incomes, and are highly dependent on marine catches, making them more vulnerable to economic change. Socially, changes can be seen from the shift in fishermen's work patterns, as they are starting to adapt to digital marketing and business diversification, such as switching to the tourism sector. Economically, adopting mobile phones and social media technology allows fishermen to sell their catch directly to a broader market without relying on intermediaries, even though competition is getting tougher. However, low involvement in fishing groups is still an obstacle to increasing their competitiveness. Through field observation and in-depth interviews, this study confirms that fishermen's success in dealing with change depends on their readiness to adapt.

Abstract

Abstract: Climate change is a global challenge that has created vulnerabilities for coastal communities, not least for eco-farming pond farmers in Pinrang Regency who are highly dependent on environmental conditions. This research aims to explain the forms of vulnerability experienced by the community of pond farmers in Lanrisang District. Through participant observation research in three villages in Lanrisang, we conducted in-depth interviews with a number of pond farming households which we present ethnographically by looking at three components of vulnerability: exposure, sensitivity and resilience. We found that climate change has led to a 0.5C-1C increase in average annual temperature as well as irregular rainfall patterns. These conditions have resulted in declining pond water quality, which is characterized by changes in salinity, pH, and DO that are not ideal for shrimp and milkfish growth so that posing a risk of failed harvest. In addition, we also found that there are emerging social issues such as competition and theft practices that could pose a security risk. This can reduce income and threaten the productivity of aquaculture. Pond farmers respond to these challenges by finding side jobs or opening businesses, leasing ponds, and converting ponds into agricultural land. We recommend community empowerment policies that focus more on climate resilience and pond farmers' welfare. Keywords: vulnerability;pond;climate change;social problems.
