Abstract

The business relationship between Indonesia and Japan continues to strengthen in line with the increasing number of Indonesian migrant workers in Japan. As of June 2023, there were 25,337 Indonesian Migrant Workers (PMI) working in Japan through the Specified Skilled Worker (SSW) program, and the number of Indonesian apprentices reached 45,919 as of December 2022. These workers are required to have Japanese language skills. This study aims to determine the effectiveness and relevance of one method in Japanese language learning, namely the role-play method, in improving Japanese speaking skills among prospective PMI. The research method involved distributing questionnaires to 17 prospective PMI undergoing training at a vocational training center (BLK). The results revealed that the majority of respondents experienced increased confidence after participating in Japanese language learning through the role-play method. The main challenges faced were generally related to vocabulary and sentence structure; however, the role-play method was found to be highly engaging and helpful in improving speaking skills. Japanese language learning requires an interactive approach to build confidence and effective understanding, and in this case, role-play has proven to be an effective method in enhancing interest, engagement, and Japanese speaking ability.

Abstract

This research aims to understand the evolution and development of Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) research with a focus on multimodality. CDA is an interdisciplinary approach that explores the use of language and discourse in reproducing, reinforcing, and being closely linked to social relations, power, and ideology. From the initial understanding introduced by Norman Fairclough in the 1980s, CDA has become an important tool for analyzing power structures and social constructions in various contexts, including media, politics, education, and popular culture. CDA has undergone significant transformations along with complex changes in the social and political world. This research aims to map the latest trends and developments in CDA studies, with a special focus on aspects of multimodality. The data collection process is carried out by data mining process in Scopus using keywords and search limitations per category Subject area; Doc.type; Pub.stage; Source type; Language. The document data collected were 303 Scopus indexed documents. By involving bibliometric methods through the Vosviewer tool, the data was visualized and analyzed. The results of the study found that the development of CDA research in the aspect of multimodality has increased in number every year. The study of CDA in terms of multimodality began in 1993 and began to experience an increase in the number of studies from 2013 to 2023. The scope of keywords that emerged was six clusters. Each cluster of keywords reflects special attention to the scope in the study of critical discourse analysis and multimodality, including the diversity of research themes, the intersection of media and social aspects, the importance of visual and multimodal analysis, the connection with the local context, and the application of critical theories and concepts.

Abstract

This study was conducted by contrasting or analyzing the similarities and differences in phoneme changes in Japanese-Sundanese Reduplication. This research aims to determine the similarities and differences in Vowel and consonant phoneme changes from the reduplication process of both languages. This research is a qualitative study with a descriptive contrastive analysis. The objects of this research are vowel and consonant phonemes that run into changes in the Japanese-Sundanese reduplication process. The results of this study indicate that vowel changes in the reduplication process do not have similarities, while the differences are generally that not all nouns, verbs, adjectives, and adverbs in Japanese can be reduplicated, whereas, in Sundanese, they can. In the reduplication process, vowel phonemes in Japanese do not run into phoneme changes, whereas in Sundanese, changes occur in the first and second vowels of the base word. For the comparison of consonant changes, Japanese-Sundanese has similarities, namely, the consonants /r/, /n/, and /m/ in Japanese-Sundanese do not run into phoneme changes, while the differences are that in Japanese, consonant phoneme changes occur at the initial phoneme, whereas in Sundanese, consonant phonemes do not run into changes.
