Abstract

In recent years, technology has been increasingly used in teaching in schools. Teachers and students use digital technology to make teaching-learning more effective and enjoyable. This situation has been supported by policies from schools that require teachers to use digital technology in teaching. This study's survey findings indicate that teachers already use digital technology in teaching, which can make students interested in learning English. This study also relates to the teacher's attitude toward learning writing skills using digital technology. This study employed interviews conducted by four English teachers at a school that mostly uses digital technology in teaching writing skills. These teachers affirm that digital technology can make teaching more accessible and make students interested in learning English.

Abstract

The current study aimed to examine the psychometric characteristics of an instrument used to evaluate academic writing creativity and self-efficacy scale among pre-service teachers, instructors, and school teachers. Using a convenience sampling, an adapted and expanded version of  Mitchell’s (2021) situated academic writing self-efficacy (SAWSES) questionnaire was distributed to 655 participants with three different occupation statuses, such as pre-service teacher (N = 315, 485%), TVET instructor (N = 80, 12%), and school teacher (N = 260, 40%). Unfortunately, due to the presence of outliers, of 655 data, only 582 data were used for Rasch statistical analyses, including the analysis of (a) unidimensionality, (b) reliability for the item and the person separation, (c) rating scale, (d) item bias, and (e) item differential function. The analysis of Differential Item Functioning (DIF) resulted that the academic writing creativity and self-efficacy scale could potentially be biased when employed to collect the data from participants with differing teaching statuses and educational backgrounds. These findings thus suggest that caution should be taken when using the Academic Writing Creativity and Self-Efficacy Scale, as highlighted by the results of the current study.

Abstract

A pronunciation-learning attitude is essential to help students improve their pronunciation proficiency. It is problematic when students do not care about learning proper pronunciation in the process of teaching and learning. Several studies have investigated EFL students perceptions toward attitudes of pronunciation learning. However, little research focused on the role of gender on students attitudes in this context. Therefore, the present study aimed to investigate students attitudes toward English pronunciation learning related to gender. An explanatory sequential mixed-method approach, integrating questionnaires of Gardner 1985s Attitude Motivation of Test Battery (AMTB) and Elliot 1995s Pronunciation Attitude Inventory (PAI) and interviews, was employed in this study. Descriptive and inferential statistical analyses were used to analyse quantitative data gathered from 151 students. For qualitative data, the semi-structured interview transcripts of eighteen participants were analysed using thematic analysis. The questionnaires reveal that the students had positive pronunciation learning attitudes, and no significant differences were found between females and males. Moreover, based on the results of the interviews, the students believed that proper pronunciation learning is important to make the message understood. Reflecting on the study results, it is hoped that English lecturers select more practical pronunciation teaching media that can make students more involved in the teaching and learning process and contribute to English pedagogy about the importance of improving learners positive attitude in pronunciation learning.

Abstract

This study examines innovative methods for teaching English literacy to junior secondary students in Eastern Indonesia, focusing on critical literacy. Using an ethnopedagogical approach, it investigates the challenges and strategies for implementing critical literacy, the effects on students’ perspectives and cultural identities, and develops tailored teaching models. Data were gathered through classroom observations, interviews with two English teachers and 50 eighth-grade students from two schools, and documents analysis. The findings highlight significant resource disparities between urban and rural areas, requiring creative adaptations of critical literacy methods. Incorporating local contexts into literacy activities strengthened students’ cultural identities and enhanced their engagement with global issues. Successful pedagogical models included bilingual multimodal texts, digital literacy integration, and collaborative project-based learning. The study also identified challenges from traditional teaching methods and an exam-focused culture, suggesting a gradual introduction of critical thinking activities. The findings of the study provide valuable insights for teachers and policymakers on implementing effective English literacy education in diverse, resource-limited settings, underscoring the need for culturally response approaches. Abstract

English literacy education in rural Papua, Indonesia, presents unique challenges shaped by geographical isolation, ethnolinguistic diversity, and limited resources. While previous studies have examined EFL teaching challenges in Indonesia, little research has explored how teachers' pedagogical beliefs interact with contextual constraints in rural settings. This study investigates the nexus between English as a Foreign Language (EFL) teachers’ beliefs and classroom practices in resource-constrained environments. Employing a qualitative case study approach, data were collected from X teachers through classroom observations, semi-structured interviews, and document analysis. Findings reveal a persistent gap between teachers’ pedagogical beliefs and their ability to implement them due to contextual constraints, including inadequate teaching materials and a rigid national curriculum. Teachers who incorporated local cultural elements, such as Papuan folktales and proverbs, into their lessons demonstrated higher student engagement and improved literacy outcomes. These culturally responsive practices bridge students’ linguistic realities and the English literacy curriculum, fostering a deeper connection to the learning process. However, systemic barriers, including insufficient professional development and the absence of culturally relevant teaching materials, limit the broader adoption of these practices. This study underscores the need for flexible curricula that integrate local cultural content and calls for increased institutional support to equip teachers in rural areas. Addressing these challenges is crucial for improving English literacy education in rural, multilingual contexts, ensuring equitable learning opportunities for all students.
