Abstract

Dari hasil observasi awal pada kelompok sasaran, yaitu sekolah-sekolah Katolikdi Kecamatan Donomulyo (TK-SMP) ada 4 sekolah yang memiliki 41 guru. Merekarata-rata merupakan guru yayasan dari Yayasan Karmel yang kantor pusatnya beradadi Malang. Sebagian besar dari guru-guru tersebut dalam mengajar masihmenggunakan metode pembelajaran yang konvensional.Tujuan pengabdian pada masyarakat ini adalah memberikan pelatihan bagipeningkatan kompetensi pedagogik para guru di sekolah-sekolah Katolik diKecamatan Donomulyo. Adapun metode yang digunakan adalah perpaduan antarademonstrasi (peragaan hipnosis oleh kedua pemateri), ceramah tentang hipnosis danpemanfaatannya dalam pembelajaran, tanya-jawab, diskusi dan praktik oleh paraguru dalam memberikan kata-kata yang sugestif kepada siswa. Setelah prosespelatihan berakhir dilakukan penyebaran angket untuk mendapat informasi balikandari peserta pelatihan. Sebagian besar peserta menyatakan mendapatkan hal yangbaru dan metode yang digunakan sangat variatif dan menyenangkan. Oleh karena itu,peserta memberi saran agar kegiatan serupa rutin bisa diadakan.

Abstract

Pelaksanaan Pengabdian Pada Masyarakat pada siswa-siswi kelas XII SMA Katolik Yos Sudarso Kepanjen Kabupaten Malang bertujuan meningkatkan pemahaman dan penguasaan siswa dalam materi reading dalam UNBK. Kegiatan pengabdian pada masyarakat ini dilakukan dengan metode bimbingan belajar dengan menggunakan modul reading yang dibuat beserta tips-tips praktis dalam mengerjakan dan cara menggunakannya. Kelompok sasaran adalah siswa-siswi kelas XII SMA Katolik Yos Sudarso Kepanjen, Malang, dan pihak guru sekolah terkait. Kelompok sasaran siswa-siswi berjumlah 55 orang dari kelas XII IPA dan IPS SMAK Yos Sudarso Kepanjen, Kabupaten Malang.Metode pelaksanaan kegiatan ini adalah tahap persiapan meliputi diskusi dengan guru pengajar mengenai metode yang biasa dilakukan, penyusunan modul, dan tahap pelaksanaan berupa bimbingan belajar soal-soal reading. Hasil yang dicapai kegiatan ini adalah : a) tersusunnya Modul materi bimbingan belajar reading yang dirancang sebagai materi pendukung yang dapat digunakan oleh guru sekolah dalam pelajaran yang biasa; b) para siswa memahami cara-cara mengerjakan soal-soal reading yang lebih efektif; c) para siswa mendapat motivasi tambahan dengan kegiatan bimbingan belajar ini sehingga lebih siap untuk menghadapi soal-soal reading dalam UNBK. Abstract

Kemampuan berbahasa Inggris yang baik sudah menjadi kewajiban bagi siswa-siswa sekolah di Indonesia,baik siswa SD, SMP, hingga SMA/SMK. Kemampuan berbahasa Inggris yang diajarkan di sekolah-sekolahIndonesia mencakup pengetahuan tata bahasa (grammar), kemampuan membaca (reading), menulis (writing),berbicara (speaking), dan mendengar (listening). Salah satu faktor yang menentukan keberhasilan menguasai kelimaaspek kemampuan ini adalah ketertarikan siswa pada apa yang dipelajari. Dalam hal kemampuan membaca(reading), salah satu jenis pengajaran membaca yang dapat menarik minat siswa untuk belajar membaca adalahcerita atau narasi, atau dalam bahasa Inggrisnya Narrative Reading.Dari hasil observasi dan diskusi dengan puhak sekolah mitra, yaitu SMP Katolik Santo YosephKepanjen, diketahui bahwa siswa kelas 7 (tujuh) SMPK St. Yoseph Kepanjen membutuhkan tambahan jam belajarbahasa Inggris, terutama untuk meningkatkan kemampuan reading. Sebagian besar bacaan yang dipakai dalampelajaran sehari-hari masih belum memakai bacaan narasi (narrative reading).Tujuan pengabdian kepada masyarakat ini adalah membimbing dan melatih siswa kelas 7 (tujuh) SMPKatolik Santo Yoseph Kepanjen tahun ajaran 2018-2019 agar menguasai strategi memahami narrative reading dandengan demikian dapat meningkatkan kemampuan bahasa Inggris mereka, terutama di aspek kemampuan reading.Metode yang dipakai menggunakan problem-based teaching dimana siswa diajak dan dibimbing untuk memahamibacaan narasi dalam modul yang sudah disediakan, dan group discussion serta peer teaching untuk memecahkan soalsoal pemahaman bacaan dalam kelompok, dengan menggunakan strategi membaca yang diajarkan oleh Tim pelaksanaabdimas. Dalam tanya-jawab setelah proses pelatihan selesai, sebagian besar peserta menyatakan dapat lebihmemahami bacaan yang diberikan berkat strategi yang diajarkan dan dapat menjawab soal-soal bacaan dengan lebihmudah. Harapannya modul pengajaran narrative reading ini dapat terus digunakan untuk melatih kemampuanberbahasa Inggris siswa-siswa di SMP Katolik Santo Yoseph Kepanjen.Kata kunci: bahasa Inggris, reading, narrative reading, strategi membacaAbstractGood English language skills have become an obligation for school students in Indonesia, from elementary,junior high, to high school/ vocational students. English language skills taught in Indonesian schools usually includethe knowledge of grammar, reading, writing, speaking, and listening. One of the factors that determine the success ofmastering these five skills is the students' interest in what is being learned. In terms of reading skill, one teachingmethod that can attract students' interest is learning English by reading stories, or Narrative Reading.Observations at and discussions with the partner school, namely the Santo Yoseph Kepanjen Catholic JuniorHigh School, revealed that the 7th (seventh) graders of SMPK St. Yoseph Kepanjen needed additional hours of learningEnglish, especially to improve their reading skill. Most of the readings used in everyday lessons have not use narrativereading yet.The purpose of this community service is to instruct and train grade 7 (seven) students of the Santo YosephKepanjen Catholic Junior High School in the 2018-2019 academic year to master strategies for understandingnarrative reading and thereby improve their English skills, especially in the aspect of reading skill. The instructionmethod used is problem-based teaching where students were taught and aided to understand narrative reading in theprovided modules. In addition, group discussions and peer teaching were used to help solving reading comprehensionproblems in the groups. The narrative reading strategies were given by the community service implementation team. Inthe question-and-answer session after the training process was completed, most of the participants stated that theycould better understand the reading given thanks to the strategies taught and could answer reading questions moreeasily. It is hoped that this narrative reading teaching module can be used regularly to improve the English languageskills of students at the Santo Yoseph Catholic Junior High School Kepanjen.Key words: English, reading skill, narrative reading, reading strategies

Abstract

AbstrakSetelah penyelenggaraan Konsili Vatikan II, peran awam sebagai pewarta menjadi semakin jelas.Sikap Gereja juga sangat terbuka dalam menanggapi perkembangan teknologi yang begitu cepat, dandiharapkan bisa dimanfaatkan sebagai media pewartaan yang lebih efektif. Sayangnya, belum semua TimPewarta Paroki mendapat pendidikan yang cukup guna melaksanakan tugas tersebut. Karena hal itulah kegiatanpengabdian kepada masyarakat ini diadakan. Materi pelatihan berisi dua hal, yaitu renungan lisan untukdiunggah via Youtube dan renungan tulis dalam format renungan tiga paragraf (rentigraf). Karena latarbelakang peserta begitu beragam, khususnya dari kemampuan pemannfaatan IT, maka tugas yang diberikanhanya terkait membuat renungan dalam bentuk tulis, yaitu dalam format renungan tiga paragraf. Walaupunbegitu, dari 97 peserta hanya 32 peserta yang mengirimkan renungan tiga paragraf (rentigraf) yang ditugaskandan akhirnya dicetak menjadi Kitab Rentigtaf. Semoga pengalaman peserta yang telah ikut membuat renungantiga paragraf dan telah dibukukan menjadi semangat baru dalam ikut mewartakan ajaran-Nya di era digital ini.Kata kunci: era digital; pewartaan; renungan tiga paragraf (rentigraf)AbstractAfter the holding of the Second Vatican Council, the role of laypeople as evangelists becameincreasingly clear. The Church's attitude is also very open in responding to rapid technological developments,and it is hoped that it can be used as a more effective evangelical media. Unfortunately, not all ParishEvangelist Teams have received sufficient education to carry out this task. That's why this community serviceactivity was held. The training material consists of two things, namely an oral reflection to be uploaded via aYouTube channel and a written reflection in three paragraph reflection (called rentigraf) format. Because theparticipants' backgrounds were so diverse, especially in terms of their ability to use IT, the assignments givenwere only related to writing reflections in written form, namely in a three-paragraph reflection format(rentigraf). Despite this, of the 97 participants, only 32 participants submitted their assigned three-paragraphreflections (rentigraf) which were eventually printed into the Book of Rentigraf. We hope that the experienceof the participants who have participated in the making of the rentigraf book will give them new enthusiasm insharing His teachings in this digital era.Keywords: digital era; proclamation; three paragraph reflection (rentigraf)

Abstract

The storytelling competition, as one of the featured competitions in the 2022 Langsep Challenge at Santa Maria Langsep Catholic High School, Malang, was the main highlight of the event. This event showcases the creativity and expertise of the competition participants in telling stories in an interesting and engaging way. Participants from various junior high schools compete to win the champion title in this competition. The various stories presented include interesting themes related to folklore. The competition jury, which consists of experienced lecturers, observes and assesses each participant's presentation based on criteria such as grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation, how to tell a story, mastery of the stage, clothing, properties used, moral message, time management, and so on. This competition is not only an opportunity to show students' speaking skills, but also develop creative thinking and self-expression skills. With full support from the school and the enthusiasm of the participants, the Story Telling Competition at Langsep Challenge 2022 created an atmosphere full of enthusiasm and joy among students.

Abstract

Hybrid learning has emerged as a significant strategy in higher education, combining face-to-face learning with technology. Theoretical discussions on hybrid learning involve an understanding of contemporary learning concepts, such as constructivism, active learning, and humanistic approaches. The integration of technology in the learning process is seen as a key element for creating a holistic and student-centered learning experience. Instructional design principles, motivation theories, and understanding online learning concepts are also important in understanding the dynamics of hybrid learning. This research was conducted using a qualitative descriptive approach which purpose is to analyze students’ response to hybrid learning in higher education. The students in this research are the first semester students at Widya Karya Catholic University who are taking an English subject. Hopefully that this research gives a significant contribution to the development of pedagogical thinking and the practical application of hybrid learning in higher education institutions.

Abstract

The development of Human Resources (HR) is needed by companies or organizations. The function of this development is to improve human resources to become more productive. Therefore, strategic human resource management is needed to be applied. With productive human resources owned by a company, the company will be more effective in achieving the goals that the company will achieve. Strategic HR development can be done through trainings. These trainings are usually based on company’s needs or employee’s needs. Widya Karya Catholic University of Malang (UKWK) is a private higher education institution in the city of Malang. Nowadays, there are more and more demands for the development of institutions, especially those who operate in the field of higher education, such as UKWK Malang. To meet the demands of these developments, this campus must hold training after training for its human resources. The research method used in this research is a descriptive method with a qualitative approach. The results of this research are described descriptively.

Abstract

The rise of the internet horror can be found online, in particular as a type of stories called the “creepypasta”. There seems to be a few studies on creepypasta that focus on the narrative structure. An American philosopher Noël Carroll who explains the structure of horror narratives and how it can be used to produce the desired horror effect. The theory used in this research is the plot structure and suspense as stated by Carroll. The central question of this research is how to explain the structures of plot and suspense in a creepypasta story, in light of Carroll’s theory. The creepypasta selected for this study is “Abandoned by Disney” by Christopher Howard Wolf. The analysis is conducted using qualitative content analysis method. The findings show that the plot structure corresponds to Carroll’s complex-discovery plot, with a longer onset stage, where the story’s monster is foreshadowed, and a shorter discovery stage, where the monster is revealed. The suspense, in the form of story questions generated in the reader, corresponds to the plot stages; the longer onset stage generates more questions to sustain suspense, and the discovery stage generates fewer questions as the monster is revealed.

Abstract

Hybrid learning, an educational approach that amalgamates traditional face-to-face instruction with technological tools, has emerged as a pivotal strategy in higher education. Contemporary pedagogical theories such as constructivism, active learning, and humanistic approaches play integral roles in shaping hybrid learning frameworks. The integration of technology within educational settings fosters a comprehensive and student-centric learning environment. Proficiency in learning design principles, motivation theories, and online learning paradigms is imperative for comprehending the intricacies of hybrid learning methodologies. This study adopts a qualitative descriptive methodology to explore students' comprehension of hybrid learning within higher education contexts. The participants of this study are first-semester English students enrolled at Widya Karya Catholic University. The research aims to offer valuable insights into pedagogical discourse and the implementation of hybrid learning strategies within higher education institutions. By shedding light on students' perspectives and experiences, this research endeavors to contribute significantly to the advancement of pedagogical practices and the refinement of hybrid learning methodologies in higher education settings.

Abstract

Learning models develop as technology develops. Nowadays teachers can no longer teach using conventional teaching methods only but they also have to use technology for teaching. The use of technology in teaching does not mean that you have to abandon old methods. However, combining the two could be a good alternative. One of the learning models is the hybrid learning or blended learning model. What is its application in teaching English courses at the Catholic University of Widya Karya Malang? This research explores the process of using hybrid learning in learning English at Widya Karya Catholic University Malang, especially in English subject . The method used in this research is a qualitative descriptive method, which provides an overview of the implementation of this learning method. It turns out that using this method provides many positive benefits both from the teacher's side and from the student's side.
