Abstract

Simpulan, pada restorasi proksimal overhang didapatkan nilai indeks plak sedang hingga buruk, kedalaman poket lebih dari 3 mm, dan kehilangan tulang alveolar [MKB. 2012;44(3):133–7].Periodontal Status and Alveolar Bone Loss on Overhanging Proximal RestorationsA healthy periodontal tissue dependent on placing a proper restoration especially proximal restoration whereas to place an overhang restoration could be a risk factor for gingivitis and alveolar bone loss. The aim of the study was to find out relation prevalence periodontal status and alveolar bone loss on proximal restorations. A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted on patients who visited Tarogong Dental Unit Public Health Centre, Garut Regency between March and November 2010 and their periodontal status including The National Institute of Dental Research. Gingiva bleeding index, probing pocket depth using Williams probe with scale 0–10 mm, Silness-Löe plaque index and Schei technic alveolar bone loss analysis were recorded. Twenty-one out of thirtyfive of overhanging proximal restorations had bleeding on probing. Based on plaque index (Silness-Löe) 8 out of 14 respondents were categorized as a poor and 6 out of 14 had moderate category of plaque index. Overhanging proximal restorations, which had pocket depth more than 3 mm, were 24 out of 35 restorations with 8% mean alveolar bone loss. Relative risk of gingival bleeding on overhanging proximal restoration was 1.05 meanwhile the relative risk of pocket depth was 1.60. In conclusions, on overhanging proximal restorations show that there are poor plaque index, bleeding gingival, probing pocket depth more than 3 mm and alveolar bone loss. Abstract

The relation between pregnancy and periodontal inflammation has been recognized for many years, therefore, it is important to maintain and promote oral health during pregnancy. The aim of this research is to evaluate dentist's knowledge in oral hygiene instructions in preventing gingivitis in the pregnant women. The research has conducted a survey of 40 general dentists in West Bandung District. The survey was done by distributing forms of the questionnaire sent by mail or by telephone interview, and by asking the dentists about their knowledge in oral hygiene instructions regarding the dental care for pregnant women. All of the respondents agreed that oral health during pregnancy was important and therefore it was important to give the Oral Hygiene Instructions (OHI) to the pregnant patients. Two-thirds of dentists (63.8%) agreed that to do scaling was safe, 36.2% of the respondents doubted if Chlorhexidine mouthwash was safe for the use in pregnant women. Almost half of the dentists (57.4%) were doubtful that there was a relationship between periodontitis and preterm birth or low weight birth rate. Dentists as one of the providers of prenatal health care already realized how important it is to keep oral health during pregnancy; however, they doubted if there was a relationship between periodontitis, pre-term birth and low weight birth rate and the safety of using chlorhexidine as an antimicrobial agent during the pregnancy. Providing up to date information and continuing education for dentist's knowledge in order to prevent gingivitis during pregnancy.

Abstract

Introduction: Polishing after scaling and root planing provides a smoother tooth surface and improves patient convenience. Recently, a novel polishing system using the air-driven high-pressured device is introduced, but the advantage over conventional polishing is still questionable. This article aims to provide a comprehensive literature study regarding dental polishing by comparing the surface roughness after conventional and air polishing systems. To conduct this review, Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines were followed. Studies published before November 29th, 2019 were systematically reviewed under “air-polishing”, “enamel roughness”, “conventional polishing”, “scanning electron microscopy” and “10 years” publication dates files with PubMed and Google Scholar database. Review: Dental polishing assists the removal of dental plaque and stains to achieve healthy periodontal tissue. The air-polishing device cleans the deeper surface with minimal damage on enamel, the efficacy depends on handpiece degree angulation to the enamel surface, time of exposure, and the powder particle size used. The air-driven device takes a shorter working time and is easy to handle compared to conventional polishing. Prophylaxis paste in conventional polishing is abrasive, hence flattening the enamel surface. Conclusion: Both techniques show efficacy in polishing procedures, nevertheless air polishing provides a smoother surface compared to conventional devices.

Abstract

Dental plaque identification uses disclosing agents to provide a better visual identification of dental plaque before the plaque control procedure. Studies show the use of natural ingredients for staining dental plaque, one of which is that red dragon fruit can be an effective alternative for evaluating dental plaque control. This scoping review aims to examine further natural dental plaque coloring from red dragon fruit. This literature review uses a scoping review study design that refers to the PRISMA-ScR analysis and uses the PCC framework. Article searches were carried out using key word (red pitaya) AND (disclosing agent), AND (dental plaque) in 5 online databases, namely PubMed, Science Direct, Wiley, SAGE, and Google Scholar. The selection of articles was carried out based on inclusion and exclusion criteria. Initial search obtained 170 articles, then selected according to inclusion and exclusion criteria resulting 9 articles. The results show dental plaque colorant from red dragon fruit extract can effectively color dental plaque as well as disclosing agents. Red dragon fruit extract meets the requirements for being a dental plaque coloring agent. At a concentration of 75%, red dragon fruit extract can color dental plaque well and produces optimal coloring at a concentration of 100%.

Abstract

ABSTRACTIntroduction: Periodontitis is a multifactorial inflammatory disease which is generally caused by plaque accumulation. Many studies have shown that Porphyromonas gingivalis (Pg) is the main etiological agent that contributes to chronic periodontitis. Scaling and root planing (SRP) is the gold standard for periodontitis treatment. The use of antibiotics as additional agents accompanying the SRP procedure has limitations that can cause resistance to subgingival periodontal pathogens. Peperomia pellucida (L.) Kunth i.e betel leaf is a natural ingredient that contains anti-inflammatory, antibacterial and antioxidant properties. This study aimed to analyze the inhibition of Peperomia pellucida (L.) Kunth  extract against Pg bacteria. Methods: The type of study used was an experimental laboratory with a Post-Test Control Group Design research design which was divided into 6 treatment groups using the disk diffusion method with concentrations of Peperomia pellucida (L.) Kunth extract 25, 50, 75 and 100%, sterile aquades as a negative control and Chlorhexidine as a positive control. Data analyses of One Way Anova and Post Hoc Tukey were used Results: Peperomia pellucida (L.) Kunth extract concentrations of 25, 50, 75, and 100% had an  effect on reducing the growth of Porphyromonas gingivalis (p≤0,05), the average inhibition response was 14.40 mm at 25% concentration, 16.58 mm at 50% concentration and 19.30 mm at 75%, 21.88 mm at 100% concentration. Conclusion: Peperomia pellucida (L.) Kunth extract has an antibacterial effect against Porphyromonas gingivalis which has the potential to be used as a periodontitis herb. Keywords: Betel leaf extract Peperomia pellucida (L.)
