Abstract

Critical discourse analysis of a film about marriage which is motivated by the concept of primogeniture becomes an interesting discourse to be studied. This study aims to analyze the concept of marriage from the point of view of the female character in the film Pride and Prejudice (2005) by using the critical discourse analysis method according to Norman Fairclough. This research is an explanatory research with a qualitative approach. The analysis was carried out through three stages, namely microstructural, mesostructural, and macrostructural analysis. From the research it was found that the perspective of each female character regarding marriage in the film Pride and Prejudice (2005) is influenced by two main things, namely the character's personal character and the character's living conditions according to the storyline. Jane Austen has the power to convey her ideology regarding primogeniture issues that occurred in society in her time to convey to readers through her novel Pride and Prejudice which director Joe Wright turned it into a film in 2005. Based on the results of the study, it can be concluded that marriage is influenced by Personal characters and living conditions in such a way shape the views and/or motives for the marriage of the female character in the film Pride and Prejudice (2005). Primogeniture is a factor of living conditions that most influence the perception of marriage in female characters in the film Pride and Prejudice (2005). The main problem in this storyline is related to the marriage of female characters, namely pride and prejudice.

Abstract

This study analyzes the types of illocutionary speech acts used by the main character in the Disney movie "Encanto". This study aims to find the type of illocutionary speech act in the Disney movie "Encanto" that is mostly used by the main character, named "Mirabel". This study uses the theory of JR Searle (1979) to analyze the types of speech acts used by the main character in the Disney movie "Encanto". The research method used in this research is descriptive qualitative. The researcher analyzed the types of illocutionary speech acts used by the main character in the Disney movie "Encanto". The researcher found four types of illocutionary speech acts in the film "Encanto", namely representative, directive, expressive, and commissive. In this study, the researcher describes the types of illocutionary speech acts used by "Mirabel" in the movie "Encanto" with 35 extracts as representatives of several types found for each type of illocutionary act proposed by JR Searle (1979).

Abstract

This article investigated and examined the motives behind hate speech on Instagram.  The subject is a well-known politician, Joe Biden the President of the United States. This article uses qualitative research techniques. The data were collected from screenshots in the politician comment columns. The transcriptions were interpreted and grouped using the theory of Pinker (2011) and the occurrences of motives were analyzed by the idea of King and Sutton (2013). The findings showed that: (1) Netizen generate motives of Instrumental Violence in response to fear. (2) Netizen generate motives of Power in response to a social entity. (3) Netizen generate motives of Revenge in response to retaliating or punishing someone. (4) Netizen generate motives of Ideology in response to psychological damage (5) Lastly, Netizen generate motives of Sadism in response to seeking pleasure by hurting another person physically or emotionally. Keywords: Hate Speech, Motives, Netizen.

Abstract

The objective of this study is the development of a digital educational tool for English language instruction by utilising social media platforms, specifically Facebook and Instagram. The ADDIE (Analyse, Design, Develop, Implement, and Evaluate) paradigm, developed by Gagne et al. in 2005, was employed in the research and development (R&D) project under consideration. The primary objective of this study is to demonstrate the process of creating a digital learning module for Integrated English Skills (IIC) education by utilising social media posts from Facebook and Instagram (FaceGram). Facebook and Instagram, because to their nature as social media platforms, are perceived as attractive resources for the purpose of facilitating Integrated English Skills instruction. The utilisation of Facebook and Instagram as platforms for English language training is anticipated to undergo a transformative process, resulting in a pedagogical approach that is both intellectually stimulating and distinctively innovative. This study aims to enhance the four English language skills, namely writing, speaking, reading, and listening, through the utilisation of Facebook and Instagram posts as educational resources. This study aims to provide several illustrative instances of information sourced from Facebook and Instagram that can be effectively utilised for the purpose of instructing Integrated English Skills within the context of digital learning. The present study employed a survey methodology within the English Literature Programme at Universitas Negeri Makassar. The participants consisted of students enrolled in the Integrated English Skills course. The findings of this study could serve as a valuable resource for educators of English as a second language, enabling them to develop engaging and distinctive instructional materials.

Abstract

This article examined the gender issues in the novel ‘A Thousand Splendid Suns’ by Khaled Hosseini. The focus of this article is to analyze the forms of gender issues and how the characters Mariam and Laila deal with gender issues in the novel A Thousand Splendid Suns. The purpose of this research is to explore gender issues and how the characters Mariam and Laila deal with them. The method used in this research is descriptive-qualitative using a feminist literary criticism approach. The main data source in this study is the novel A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini. After analyzing the novel, the researchers found that there were five gender issues experienced by Mariam and Laila, namely: (1) violence; (2) marginalization; (3) subordination; (4) stereotypes; and (5) double standards. Besides that, this research provides an overview of how the characters deal with gender issues by using education, awareness, and physical strength to fight their oppressors.

Abstract

This study describes the types of speech styles used by the characters in the film Sense and Sensibility and the social factors that influence the use of these speech styles. This research aims to analyze the types of speech styles in film Sense and Sensibility based on the theory of Martin Joos (1967) and Holmes' theory (2017) to examine social factors that influence speech styles used by characters in Sense and Sensibility films. The research method used in this research is a qualitative descriptive method. Researchers analyzed the types of speech styles used by the characters. The research results shows there are 5 types of speech styles out of the 50 data found, there are formal style with 12 data representing 24% of all data, the consultative style with 5 data representing 10% of all data, the casual style with 26 data representing 52% of all data and intimate styles with 6 data representing 12% of all data, and finally frozen style with 1 data representing 2% of all data. There are four social factors that influence the use of speech styles by the characters, the four social aspects are participant, setting, topic, and function.

Abstract

The purpose of this study, which focused on the novel Percy Jackson & the Olympians: the lightning thief by Rick Riordan, was to examine the many types of signs used in the novel that focused on the object, namely icon, index, and symbol it contains. This study used a descriptive qualitative methodology and Pierce's semiotic theory as its theoretical framework. Using note-taking as the primary research instrument, the data for this study were gathered from the novel Percy Jackson & the Olympians: the lightning thief by Rick Riordan. The analysis's results showed that Pierce's semiotic theory can be used to understand the meaning of these three sign components, especially as it relates to the relationship between their object, representamen, and interpretant. For example, the visual of big marble frieze in the novel is the icon of Greek gods; the blood that comes out is an index of a scar; and a black-and-white bull’s horn is a symbol of Minotour.

Abstract

This article investigated and examined filler words' types, functions, and factors in students' speech while converting the written language to spoken language at the English department of Universitas Negeri Makassar in the pedagogy of speaking class.  Subjects are non-native English speakers but EFL students. This article uses qualitative research techniques. The data were collected from classroom observations, interviews, and transcription. The transcriptions were interpreted and grouped using the theory of Rose (1998). The occurrences of fillers were analyzed by the idea of Clark and Tree (2002), and the causes and function of fillers were analyzed by the theory of Kharismawan (2017) and Duvall et al. (2014). The findings showed that: (1) The students produced lexical and non lexical fillers while converting the written language to spoken language.  (2) Fillers appear at the beginning, middle, and near or the end of the utterance.  (3) The findings showed that the students produced fillers as hesitation devices, empathizing devices, mitigating devices, editing terms devices, and time-creating devices. Besides, a word cannot be categorized as a filler if it stands or works as a conjunction in an utterance.  (4) Lastly, this research found that the filler causes were divided attention, infrequent words, and nervousness.

Abstract

Abstrak. Program peningkatan minat baca ini bertujuan untuk meningkatkan minat dan keterampilan literasi anak-anak melalui pendekatan interaktif dan kolaboratif. Kegiatan rutin membaca bersama menunjukkan dampak positif, terutama pada peningkatan partisipasi aktif, keterlibatan emosional, dan kepercayaan diri anak-anak. Sesi diskusi setelah membaca cerita juga membantu mengasah kemampuan berpikir kritis dan membangun empati melalui pertukaran perspektif. Program ini memanfaatkan media interaktif, termasuk papan cerita dan aplikasi digital berbasis permainan, yang terbukti meningkatkan pemahaman kosakata dan daya ingat. Selain membaca, anak-anak diajak untuk menulis cerita pendek sebagai sarana mengekspresikan kreativitas dan emosi. Tantangan dalam program ini, seperti perbedaan tingkat kemampuan literasi dan keterbatasan perangkat digital, diatasi melalui pengelompokan peserta dan pemanfaatan media fisik. Dampak positif juga terlihat pada orang tua dan masyarakat yang semakin mendukung kegiatan literasi di rumah dan desa. Evaluasi menunjukkan bahwa pendekatan ini efektif dalam meningkatkan minat dan kemampuan literasi di daerah dengan akses terbatas, dengan rekomendasi penguatan dukungan teknologi dan pelatihan fasilitator untuk keberlanjutan program. Kata Kunci : Minat Baca, Literasi Anak, Pendekatan Interaktif, Media Interaktif, Diskusi Kelompok, Pemahaman Bacaan, Program Literasi, Keterlibatan Emosional, Kreativitas, Masyarakat Desa

Abstract

Pelatihan membaca puisi bahasa Inggris merupakan salah satu upaya untuk memperkenalkan budaya literasi kepada siswa sekolah dasar. Kegiatan ini bertujuan untuk mengembangkan kemampuan kosa kata dan pelafalan dalam bahasa Inggris, meningkatkan literasi siswa, serta meningkatkan apresiasi siswa terhadap karya sastra. Pelatihan ini dilaksanakan di SDIT Khalifah Makassar dengan melibatkan 20 orang siswa-siswi kelas VI. Metode yang digunakan dalam pelatihan ini adalah bimbingan dan praktik membaca puisi secara intensif. Siswa diajarkan dan dilatih teknik membaca puisi bahasa Inggris dengan lafal, intonasi, dan ekspresi yang tepat. Mereka juga dibimbing untuk memahami makna puisi yang dibaca. Selain itu, kegiatan ini juga memperkenalkan berbagai jenis puisi dalam bahasa Inggris. Hasil pelatihan menunjukkan adanya peningkatan kemampuan siswa dalam membaca puisi bahasa Inggris. Siswa dapat membaca puisi dengan pelafalan yang jelas, intonasi dan tekanan yang sesuai, serta menunjukkan ekspresi yang tepat sesuai dengan makna puisi yang dibaca. Mereka juga menunjukkan antusiasme yang tinggi dalam mengikuti kegiatan ini. Pelatihan ini diharapkan dapat menjadi langkah awal dalam memperkenalkan budaya literasi, khususnya dalam bahasa Inggris, kepada siswa sekolah dasar.
