Abstract

Municipal sewage sludge can be used as fertilizer as it contains a lot of nutrients. By focusing on copper (Cu), iron (Fe), manganese (Mn), and zinc (Zn) contents in municipal sewage sludge from primary oxidation ponds and in plant tissue sections, this study attempts to explain the relationship between plant yield and metal concentrations. Raw sludge samples were collected, air-dried, and ground to powder form at the beginning of fieldwork. The metal concentrations of sewage sludge were copper 6.9 mg/kg; iron 330.2 mg/kg manganese 6.7 mg/kg and zinc 9.1 mg/kg. Orthosiphon stamineus (cat’s whiskers) was selected and the plant received a different quantity of sludge application ranging from 1 g to 4 g per plant weekly for six consecutive weeks while observations were done for eleven weeks. Physical parameters such as shrub width and height were monitored to determine plant growth. Through this study, the determined optimum sewage sludge dosage for cats’ whiskers was between 2 to 3 g per plant.

Abstract

Sustainable wastewater treatment necessitates the application of natural and green material in the approach. Thus, selecting a natural coagulant in wastewater treatment is a crucial step to prevent secondary environmental pollution due to residual inorganic coagulant in treated effluent. Present study investigated the application of Musa paradisiaca (banana) peels in domestic wastewater treatment. From the experimental results, the banana peels were found to have a higher yield with lower moisture content compared to the other fruit wastes. The surface charge of the banana peels was +6.53 meq/g MLSS while the recorded protein composition was 0.248 mg/L. The scanning electron microscopy (SEM) showed that banana peels has rough and pore surfaces compared to the others fruit wastes. At optimum conditions of 50 mg/L dosages, pH 4, and 100 rpm of agitational speed, the maximum turbidity removal of up to 89.9% with initial turbidity of 76 NTU was obtained. The banana peel was also evidenced in efficiently removing COD and NH4-N from domestic wastewater up to 80.0% and 62.5%, respectively. Overall, the findings suggested that Musa paradisiaca (banana) peels is efficient and suitable to be applied as the natural coagulant in treating domestic wastewater.

Abstract

Water pollution issues and clean water needs have forced developing countries, such as Malaysia. Relating to clean water demand for covering human activities, water quality index determine several water parameter that presents pollution problem in water. As a water source, clean water in river is a critical concern. River water quality is according to natural process and anthropogenic activities. River water is potential to be contaminated by industrial, domestic and agricultural activities. Thus, in this study, water quality and availability in Manik Urai, Durian and Geh rivers were reviewed. Each pollutants was investigated, for instance BOD, COD, DO, SS, and pH. Range of river water flow was also examined. Total water demand was mentioned. In addition, the impacts of drought in 1990-2016 were assessed. However, review resulted that climate change has severe impact in water supply system.
