Abstract

Malnutrition and tuberculosis are common problems in most developing and underdeveloped countries, including Indonesia. These two problems tend to interact with each other. Significantly lower nutritional status was found in patients with active tuberculosis (TB) compared to healthy people. Malnutrition can lead to the secondary immune deficiency that increases the host's susceptibility to infection. In patients with tuberculosis, malnutrition can cause decreased appetite, malabsorption of nutrients, micronutrient malabsorption, and metabolic changes that are detrimental to the patient. Protein-energy malnutrition and micronutrient deficiencies increase the risk of tuberculosis. In malnourished patients, the healing process is relatively longer and the mortality rate is higher than in well-nourished patients. Knowledge of good nutrition and also economic status also affects the severity of tuberculosis. Partner problems that can be identified are as follows: (1) Increasing TB cases from day to day, (2) Low cure rates for TB patients, (3) Finding cases of death due to TB, (4) Finding cases of malnutrition and tuberculosis, Solutions to problems offered to solve the problems faced by partners are as follows: (1) Adequate counseling and debriefing to assist TB patients to achieve high cure rates. (2) Designing the “TBMenu” application program which introduces an android-based application about simple, inexpensive and useful nutrition options for TB patients with middle to lower economies. This application is made based on body weight, the length of treatment the patient has been on. In addition, it can also assess the nutritional status of patients in order to measure and control tuberculosis in the city of Medan. Health education and debriefing about the dangers of TB has been carried out to 20 TB patients at the Exemplary Health Center in Medan Kota District through a zoom meeting due to limitations due to the Covid-19 pandemic

Abstract

Abstract

Gut has a bidirectional connection with lung. This is often called the gut-lung axis. Most lung diseases have high morbidity, mortality and disability. This is due to the inflammatory process. This inflammatory process not only caused physiological changes in the lungs, but also caused pathological conditions in the gut. Likewise, if gut health is not maintained, causing intestinal dysbiosis, it also has the potential for translocation or expansion of bacteria from the intestine to other organs. Therefore, providing intervention to the gut to maintain the balance of gut microbiota has been shown to improve inflammatory status and lung disease susceptibility. The intervention given can be in the form of probiotics or prebiotics..

Abstract

Abstract

Abstract: Several factors can influence the severity of COVID-19, including nutritional status and malnutrition conditions. This study compares malnutrition screening methods with body mass index to find better predictors of COVID-19 severity. This study is a cross-sectional analysis of medical records from all adult COVID-19 patients (total sampling) treated at Amri Tambunan Deli Serdang Hospital. The World Health Organization criteria were used to determine the severity of COVID-19. A Global Subjective Assessment (SGA) questionnaire was used to screen for malnutrition, while anthropometric measurements (Kg/m2) were used to calculate the Body Mass Index (BMI). The Chi-Square Test was used for statistical analysis. This study included 508 COVID-19 hospitalisation patients, the majority of whom were women (55.5%), aged 18-29 years (25%) and had moderate severity (89.6%). The seriousness of COVID-19 was associated with malnutrition conditions as measured by the SGA questionnaire (p0.001), with patients with moderate to severe malnutrition being 3.4 times more likely to develop robust and critical COVID-19 (95% CI 1.6 - 7.0). There is no significant relationship between Body Mass Index and the severity of COVID-19 (p0.05). Malnutrition screening with SGA is more accurate than BMI in predicting the severity of COVID-19. Keywords:   IMT, a predictor of COVID-19 severity degree, malnutrition screening
