Abstract

To date there have been a lot of currently emerging studies focusing on English speaking anxiety experienced by Indonesian university students. Nevertheless, particularly the studies have not investigated university students in Lampung region as the new context. This study aims to describe the level, attitude and perception, and the causes of speaking anxiety in English among university students in the Lampung context. Descriptive research combining quantitative and qualitative approach was performed to conduct this study. 64 new state university students from the English department were involved as participants in this study. A questionnaire and interview form related to speaking anxiety were used to collect the data whereby quantitative data was analyzed by using descriptive statistics while qualitative data was analyzed via content analysis. Results of this study showed that students experienced low anxiety level when speaking English as a foreign language, but mostly they provided the perception that speaking ability was a trigger for anxiety. Even though students' positive attitude towards English used in the classroom was reflected, their speaking skill in English was negative. Additionally, some main sources such as the limited of vocabulary, self-confident, and speaking opportunity were the causes of speaking anxiety.

Abstract

This research aims at finding out types of code switching occurred in students’speaking test of EFL learner, the percentage of each type, and finding out the students’reasons in switching their language.Threetypes of code switching proposed by Poplack (1980); intra-sentential switching, inter-sentential switching, and tag switching were analyzed in this descriptive qualitative study. There was one class as the sample of this research. After gaining the data, the researcher categorized the data based on three types of code switching mentioned above. The result revealed that all three types of code switching appears in the students’ speaking. The first type, intra - sentential switching, it tends to be the main type of switching (69.49%), followed by intra-sentential switching (27.12%). Different from those two types, tag switching seems to occur the least frequent type of switching that appeared in the comments (3.39%). Then, the researcher also classified the data into seven reasons in doing code switching according to Hoffman (1991). There are still some other reasons found by the researcher in conducting the research.

Abstract

This study discusses the analysis of editorial and opinion texts in the Kompas online newspaper, namely kompas.com. This research is a descriptive qualitative research. The qualitative data is collected in the form of words from the text. The data sources used are editorial and opinion texts in the Kompas online newspaper. Analysis of the news structure is carried out based on two types of structure, namely the superstructure which includes the schematic and general structure of the news, the microstructure which includes 1) background; 2) use of words; 3) news expressions, and macro structures that include themes The results of this study are that the editorial text begins with a title that informs the death of a humanitarian hero, namely medical staff, while the opinion text begins with a title that informs how to respond to worry as a result of artificial intelligence technology. Elements of setting are found in opinion texts and editorial texts. The theme raised in the editorial text is humanity, while the theme in the Kompas.com opinion text is artificial intelligence. Penelitian ini membahas tentang analisis teks editorial dan opini pada surat kabar online Kompas, yaitu kompas.com. Penelitian ini adalah penelitian kualitatif deskriptif. Data kualitatifnya dikumpulkan dengan bentuk kata-kata dari teks. Sumber data yang digunakan ialah teks editorial dan opini pada surat kabar online kompas. Analisis struktur berita dilakukan berdasarkan dua jenis struktur, yaitu superstruktur yang mencakup skema dan struktur umum berita, struktur mikro yang mencakup 1) latar; 2) penggunaan kata; 3) ekspresi berita, dan struktur makro yang mencakup tema. Hasil penelitian ini adalah teks editorial dimulai dengan judul yang menginformasikan gugurnya pahlawan kemanusiaan yaitu tenaga medis, sedangkan teks opini dimulai dengan judul yang menginformasikan tentang bagaimana menyikapi rasa khawatir sebagai dampak dari teknologi kecerdasan buatan. Unsur dari latar ditemukan dalam teks opini dan teks editorial. Tema yang diangkat dalam teks editorial adalah rasa kemanusiaan, sedangkan tema pada teks opini kompas.com adalah kecerdasan buatan.

Abstract

The expressive approach is one of the approaches that can be used to study a literary work. The expressive approach is an approach that focuses on the author of a literary work. The author is a very important thing in a study with this expressive approach, because what will be studied is the relationship between an author and his creations. In this study, the author will discuss the results of the study of the poem entitled "Hatiku Selembar Daun" by Sapardi Djoko Damono with an expressive approach, the author will examine this poem based on the author. This study uses a qualitative descriptive method, and uses a literature review technique. From the results of this study based on an expressive approach, it can be concluded that here the author likens himself to a leaf, which seems helpless. Pendekatan ekspresif adalah salah satu pendekatan yang dapat digunakan untuk mengkaji sebuah karya sastra. Pendekatan ekspresif merupakan sebuah pendekatan yang berfokus pada pengarang sebuah karya sastra. Pengarang adalah hal yang sangat penting dalam sebuah kajian dengan pendekatan ekspresif ini, karena yang akan dikaji adalah keterkaitan seorang pengarang ini dengan hasil karya ciptaannya. Pada penelitian ini penulis akan membahas mengani hasil kajian pada puisi berjudul “Hatiku Selembar Daun” karya Sapardi Djoko Damono dengan pendekatan ekspresif, penulis akan mengkaji puisi ini berdasarkan pengarangnya. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode deskriptif kualitatif, dan menggunakan teknik telaah literatur. Dari hasil kajian ini berdasarkan pendekatan ekspresif dapat disimpulkan bahwa di sini pengarang mengibaratkan dirinya sebagai selembar daun, yang seperti tak berdaya.
