Abstract

This study examines the influence of childhood experiences on the character development of fifth-semester English Literature students at Universitas Ba-likpapan through a psychoanalytic perspective. Utilizing qualitative meth-ods, including surveys and interviews, the research explores how early life experiences, internal conflicts, and academic environments shape students' social interactions and decision-making processes. The findings indicate that 65.6% of respondents feel their childhood experiences significantly affect their current social interactions, aligning with Sigmund Freud's theory that early developmental stages impact adult personality. Additionally, 34.4% of student’s report that past emotional experiences influence their ability to face academic challenges, highlighting the role of the id, ego, and superego in managing internal conflicts. The study underscores the importance of pos-itive interactions with educators in reinforcing moral values and shaping student character, suggesting that higher education should not only focus on academic knowledge but also support holistic character development. The implications for educators include creating an environment conducive to fostering students' emotional resilience and integrity.

Abstract

This study examines the relationship between the characters' personalities and the three personality dimensions—Neuroticism, Extroversion, and Openness to Experience—in Nicola Barker's novel *The Three Button Trick and Other Stories*. The research aims to identify the types of violations committed by the characters and to explore the personality dimension relationships depicted through their personalities. The theoretical framework for this research includes Paul Grice's theory of maxim violation, which is used to explain personality relations, and the Five Factor Theory introduced by McCrae and Costa, which helps describe the personalities of the characters. A qualitative research method is employed to analyses the data, focusing on the maxim relations produced by the characters that reflect their personalities during communication. The data is collected from the text, sorted, analysed, and described according to the research needs. Triangulation is used to combine various data and sources for analysis. The results reveal that there are violations of maxim relations, habits, and personality exchange functions, demonstrating that personalities are interconnected. Ultimately, in the process of conversation, there can be a mutual understanding of the interlocutor's personality.

Abstract

Collaborative writing offers a powerful pedagogical approach that significantly enhances essay writing skills. By encouraging students to work together, it fosters a dynamic environment where diverse perspectives and knowledge converge to create more robust academic work. This shared intellectual journey moves beyond solitary writing, promoting clear articulation, active listening, and effective negotiation of meaning. Brainstorming in groups sparks innovative ideas and arguments, while providing and receiving constructive feedback deepens understanding of rhetoric and argumentation. Students become more attuned to their audience, collectively striving for clarity and persuasive impact. Ultimately, collaborative writing not only yields higher-quality essays but also cultivates essential teamwork, communication, and critical thinking skills applicable beyond academia, leading to students’ improvement. A qualitative study explored the impact of collaboratively designed materials on college students' English writing. The research revealed a significant students’ improvement in their writing, marked by richer ideas and expanded vocabulary, compared to previous individual learning. Notably, student participation in collaborative writing sessions also increased, suggesting a positive correlation between this approach and learning motivation. The findings indicate that collaborative learning in a professional context can effectively boost engagement and enhance the quality of students' written work, contributing to overall students’ improvement in their writing skills.
