Abstract

This study evaluates the efficiency level of Selected Amil Zakat Institutions (OPZ) in Indonesia with a span of 2017–2021. Data Envelopment Analysis and Tobit Regression were employed to evaluate OPZ performances. The findings show that only two out of 14 OPZ in Indonesia have experienced perfect efficiency, i.e., LAGZIS Peduli in 2017 and LAZISNU in 2019-2021. The inefficiency that befalls OPZ in Indonesia mostly comes from the output variable, i.e., the collection and distribution of social funds. It is expected that OPZ in Indonesia can optimize the collection and distribution of social funds. Another unique finding is that the OPZ in Indonesia tends to stabilize its efficiency level during the COVID-19 pandemic, namely in 2020 and 2021. The Tobit regression shows that the factors of institution size and number of branch offices have a significant influence on the efficiency level of OPZ in Indonesia, inversely proportional to the factors of age and affiliation of Amil Zakat Institutions, which have no significant effect on the efficiency level of the institution

Abstract

This study aims to explore the impact of bank credit along with three other independent variables, namely population, employment, and inflation, on economic growth in 55 Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) member countries. The data used is annual panel data from 2010 to 2021, obtained from SESRIC OIC. The analysis method applied in this study is static panel data regression. The results show that each independent variable, such as population, employment, inflation, and total bank credit, has a significant effect both simultaneously and partially on the economic growth variable (GDP). Bank credit facilitates the efficient allocation of resources from savers to borrowers who have productive investment opportunities, thereby promoting economic growth. Second, banks act as an important channel in the transmission of monetary policy by providing financial intermediation, receiving and utilizing large amounts of public funds, and creating money supply. Third, bank credit expansion is associated with higher economic growth across industries, encouraging tangible investment but not intangible investment in more debt-dependent industries.

Abstract

Amid the economic crises triggered by the COVID-19 pandemic, sustainable financial systems have become essential for resilience and recovery, particularly in ASEAN countries where Islamic banks play a crucial role in economic stability. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the performances of the Islamic Bank in the ASEAN countries in terms of both efficiency and productivity. This study provides insights into 33 Islamic banks in Indonesia, Malaysia, Brunei Darussalam, Thailand, and the Philippines from 2015 to 2022. This study employs the Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) technique and the Malmquist Productivity Index (MPI) to simultaneously attain elevated levels of efficiency and productivity. The result shows that Maybank Islamic Berhad was considered the most efficient and productive Islamic Bank within ASEAN countries. In terms of significant elements, it was discovered that shifts in technology capabilities have a greater magnitude of effect on Islamic banking productivity in ASEAN than shifts in innovation strategies and operational efficiencies. The findings also show that Islamic banks in ASEAN region experienced a growth in banking performance during the research period. This implies that the Islamic banking sector demonstrated enhanced performance despite the adverse effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. This study suggests that all ASEAN Islamic banks must continue to enhance the quality of their technology in order to raise their efficiency and generate more productivity in the future.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the role of social media in the form of Youtube in promoting the city branding of Yogyakarta, which has been known as a city of culture. Specifically, this research develops three research questions: 1) “What is the role of Youtube social media in promoting city branding of Yogyakarta?”, 2) “Does the cultural aspect appear as the main image of Yogyakarta on Youtube social media?”, 3) “What are the roles of individuals and institutions in the process of Yogyakarta city branding as a cultural city on social media Youtube?”. A total of 240 user-generated content on Youtube were collected via #yogyakarta over a period of 1 month. The content is then analyzed using content information analysis. This study adopts 12 different categories in order to analyze video content. Related to the research question, the research results show that social media plays an important role in creating city branding in Yogyakarta. In this case, users are able to describe Yogyakarta from various perspectives through social media (Youtube). Second, the cultural aspects identified are not the main aspects related to Yogyakarta, but local culinary delights and historical buildings. Nonetheless, these two aspects have a long history and connection with the culture in Yogyakarta. For the last question, the research results show that individuals play a bigger role in building Yogyakarta city branding than institutions. This shows that individuals are positioned not only as consumers of social media but also as producers of social media.

Abstract

This study examines whether COVID-19 has affected the stability of Islamic banking efficiency in Indonesia and Malaysia using the Data Envelopment Window Analysis (DEWA) using data from 2017 to 2022. The findings indicate that Islamic banks in Malaysia exhibit a higher level of efficiency and stability as compared to their counterparts in Indonesia across all three efficiency measures, namely Technical Efficiency (TE), Pure Technical Efficiency (PTE), and Scale Efficiency (SE). In addition, the findings show that Islamic banks in both countries have stable efficiency performance over the period under investigation and hence the Covid-19 pandemic has not affected their efficiency levels. From the analysis, we further note that financing and labor costs are the main sources of inefficiency in Malaysian Islamic banks while fixed assets and operating revenue contribute the most to Indonesian Islamic banks’ inefficiency.
