Abstract

This study investigates the impact of the Human Development Index (HDI) and the Information and Communication Technology Development Index (ICT-DI) on the digital zakat in Indonesia. The HDI variable is proxied by the quality of human resources, while ICT-DI is measured by the number of internet users. This study uses a multiple linear model to analyze such an impact. Multiple regression tests are used to determine the particular effect of HDI and ICT-DI on the growth rate of digital zakat. The results show that HDI has partially a significant effect on the digital zakat growth rate. ICT-DI also has a significant and positive influence on digital zakat. At the same time, HDI and ICT-DI have a significant effect on the growth rate of digital zakat. These results have implications for increasing HDI and ICT-DI that can positively impact on the growth rate of digital zakat.

Abstract

Zakat, a core pillar of Islam, serves as an essential tool for wealth redistribution and socio-economic welfare. Despite Indonesia being home to the largest Muslim population globally, research on its zakat potential remains underdeveloped. This study aims to map the zakat potential across 510 cities and districts in Indonesia and propose strategies for optimizing zakat collection. Using the Indicators for Zakat Potential Mapping (IPPZ) framework developed by PUSKAS BAZNAS in 2019, secondary data from various official sources were aggregated to estimate zakat potential by province and zakat object. The results show that DKI Jakarta has the highest potential, totaling IDR 64.5 trillion, followed by East Java and West Java. Zakat on agricultural products, livestock, cash, corporate zakat, and professional income are the key contributors to this potential, with regional variations. The study's novelty lies in its detailed local-level zakat mapping, offering fresh insights into regional zakat potential. Additionally, it presents innovative strategies for enhancing zakat collection through decentralized efforts at the village, sub-district, and city levels, contributing to more effective zakat management and socio-economic development in Indonesia.

Abstract

Abstract

Research Originality: This study examines whether sukuk serves as a substitute or complement to banks, offering new insights into the resilience and vulnerability of Indonesia’s dual banking system under macroeconomic shocks. Research Objectives: To examine the evolving sukuk–bank performance relationship before and after the 2020 global recession, and its implications for financial stability. Research Methods: Quarterly data (2015–2023) from 6 Islamic and 15 conventional banks are analyzed using a dynamic panel System GMM model to address endogeneity and bank-specific heterogeneity. Empirical Results: Prior to the crisis, the development of the sukuk market significantly reduced the profitability of Islamic banks, indicating a substitution effect. After the crisis, the negative impact on Islamic banks weakened, suggesting partial complementarity. Inflation widened margins, money supply reduced them, and GDP growth benefited only conventional banks. Implications: Aligning sukuk market growth with banking strategies can strengthen resilience, enhance competitiveness, and support stability in dual banking systems.
