Abstract

Background: Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus is a chronic disease that requires high compliance in long-term treatment. Low patient knowledge about how to take medication correctly is one of the main causes of non-compliance, which can worsen glycemic control and increase the risk of complications. Objective: This community service activity aims to evaluate the effect of pharmacy education on increasing the level of knowledge of Type 2 DM patients about how to take medication correctly and rationally. Method: The activity was carried out through a pre-test and post-test approach using leaflet media, direct counseling, and individual pharmacy consultations. The assessment was carried out on 30 Type 2 DM patients by comparing the results before and after education was given. Results: After pharmacy education, there was a significant increase in the respondents' knowledge scores. As many as 83% of patients were able to mention the dosage and rules for using the drug correctly after the intervention. Previously, most patients did not understand the importance of taking medication and the potential side effects. Discussion: These results indicate that pharmacy education is very effective in improving patient understanding of oral hypoglycemic medication. Education that is carried out communicatively and adjusted to the patient's condition has been proven to be able to change the patient's understanding and behavior in using drugs. This finding is in line with several previous studies that emphasize the important role of pharmacists in the management of Type 2 DM therapy. Conclusion: Pharmacy education has been proven to have a positive effect on increasing patient knowledge about taking medication properly. Similar interventions need to be implemented periodically and continuously as part of clinical pharmacy services in first-level health facilities.

Abstract

Background: Geriatric patients are a vulnerable group to drug side effects due to decreased physiological function and the presence of multiple chronic diseases that require polypharmacy therapy. The combination of various drugs in one prescription increases the possibility of potential drug-drug interactions (pDDIs) which can have a negative impact on patient safety. Objective: This study aims to analyze the frequency, type, and severity of potential drug interactions found in geriatric patient prescriptions at the pharmacy installation of the Regional General Hospital (RSUD), and to identify the drugs that most often cause interactions. Methods: This study used a retrospective descriptive design with a quantitative approach. Data were collected from 250 copies of prescriptions for patients aged ≥60 years who received outpatient and inpatient care during January–March 2025. Interaction analysis was performed using the Medscape Drug Interaction Checker, and the results were classified based on severity (minor, moderate, major). Results: From a total of 250 prescriptions analyzed, 418 potential drug interactions were found, consisting of 38.5% major interactions, 50.2% moderate interactions, and 11.3% minor interactions. The drugs most frequently involved in interactions included amlodipine, simvastatin, furosemide, aspirin, and metformin. Conclusion: The results of the study indicate that the incidence of potential drug interactions in geriatric patients is relatively high. This indicates the need for a more careful prescription monitoring system, active involvement of clinical pharmacists, and the application of system-based technology to detect and manage drug interactions effectively. This step is important to improve patient safety and the effectiveness of therapy among the elderly.

Abstract

Background: Paracetamol is a widely used antipyretic and analgesic drug, particularly in syrup form for children. The stability of syrup preparations is significantly influenced by storage conditions, particularly temperature. Objective: This study aimed to analyze the physical and chemical stability of paracetamol syrup preparations stored at different temperatures. Methods: An experimental laboratory study was conducted on three storage groups: room temperature (25±2°C), cold temperature (4±2°C), and high temperature (40±2°C) for 30 days. Physical stability evaluation included color, clarity, pH, and viscosity, while chemical analysis was performed using UV-Vis spectrophotometry to measure paracetamol levels. Results: The results showed that syrup stored at high temperatures experienced a significant decrease in active ingredient levels (up to 20%) and changes in pH. Preparations stored at cold and room temperature remained physically and chemically stable throughout the test period. Conclusion: High storage temperatures accelerate the degradation of paracetamol in syrup preparations, so it is recommended to store at room temperature or refrigerated to maintain stability.

Abstract

Background: Long queues and waiting times exceeding the standard in the Emergency Department (ER) are indicators of low hospital operational efficiency. This problem not only impacts patient satisfaction but also the overall safety and quality of healthcare services. The role of operational management is crucial in addressing this issue through resource management, workflow, and the integrated use of information technology. Objective: This study aims to analyze the role of operational management in managing queues in the ER and identify factors influencing the effectiveness of this queuing system. Methods: The study used a quantitative-descriptive approach using observation, semi-structured interviews, and document review in the ER of RSUD X. The sample consisted of 30 patients and 10 medical personnel selected purposively. Data were analyzed descriptively and linked to operational management theory. Results: It was found that operational management contributes significantly to queue management, through the implementation of a triage system, scheduling of healthcare personnel, and the utilization of hospital information systems. However, challenges such as limited bed capacity, shortage of medical personnel, and lack of information system integration remain major obstacles. Conclusion: Optimizing operational management in the emergency department (ED) has been shown to improve service flow and reduce waiting times. Continuous evaluation of operational systems and strengthening of human resources and information technology capacity are recommended to improve the quality of emergency services.

Abstract

Abstract

Background: Self-medication is a common practice in the community, especially in urban areas. Lack of understanding about drugs, dosages, and side effects often leads to irrational drug use. Pharmacists have a strategic role in providing education to the community to improve the safety and effectiveness of self-medication. Objective: This activity aims to qualitatively explore the role of pharmacists in self-medication education in urban communities, as well as identify obstacles and opportunities in its implementation. Method: This study was conducted through a qualitative approach with an in-depth interview method with 6 pharmacists and 10 community members in urban areas. Data were analyzed using a thematic approach. Results: It was found that pharmacists act as a trusted source of information on over-the-counter and OTC drugs, but their involvement is still limited due to workload, lack of time, and low public awareness of the importance of consulting with pharmacists. Conclusion: The role of pharmacists in self-medication education is very important but not optimal. Community-based interventions and supporting policies are needed so that self-medication education can run systematically and have a broad impact.
