Abstract

Abstract This study examines the use of hedges in politic field, especially in interview of Sunday television program that has focus in Julia Gillard?s Utterances. The purpose of this study is to find out and describe about the types of hedges expressions and how do hedges expressions serve a function in Julia Gillard?s responds in the interview by using theories of Francoise Salager-Meyer in Miller (1994) about the typology of hedges expressions, and the function of hedges expressions. The method that is used in this research is quantitative method which is focused in analyzing the use of hedges in an interview of Julia Gillard?s at Sunday program. The result shows that the types of hedges mostly used in the interview are modal auxiliary verbs, such as can, could, will, would, should and shouldnot. The other types of hedges belong to modal lexical verbs; adjectival, adverbial, and nominal modal phrase; approximators of degree, quantity, frequency, and time; introductory phrases; and if clause. In this research the compound hedges type does not be found. While the functions are minimize the threat to face; ways of being more precise in reporting result; and as a politeness strategy. It is also possible that in each of the functions contain some of hedges types.Keywords: Hedges, Forms of Hedges, Kind of hedges Used by Julia Gillard, Sunday ProgramAbstrakPenelitian ini meneliti hedges di bidang politik, terutama dalam wawancara program televisi hari Minggu yang berfokus pada ucapan Julia Gillard. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui dan menjelaskan tentang jenis-jenis hedges dan bagaimana fungsi hedges bekerja dalam respon Julia Gillard dalam wawancara dengan menggunakan teori-teori Francoise Salager-Meyer dalam Miller (1994) tentang tipologi hedges, dan fungsi hedges. Metode yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah metode kuantitatif yang difokuskan dalam menganalisis penggunaan hedges dalam wawancara dengan Julia Gillard di Sunday program. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa hedges yang paling banyak digunakan dalam wawancara adalah kata kerja modal tambahan, seperti can, could, will, would, should, danshould not. Hedges lainnya termasuk modal kata kerja leksikal; frase modal kata sifat, kata keterangan, dan nominal; perkiraan derajat, kuantitas, frekuensi, dan waktu; frasa pengantar; dan jika klausa. Dalam penelitian ini, tipe gabungan hedges tidak ditemukan. Sementara fungsi hedges dalam ucapan Julia Gillard adalah meminimalkan ancaman yang akan dihadapi; cara lebih tepat dalam melaporkan hasil; dan sebagai strategi kesopanan. Dalam hal ini, memungkinkan bahwa di masing-masing fungsi bisa terdiri dari beberapa jenis hedges.Kata kunci: Hedges, Bentuk Hedges, Jenis Hedges yang Digunakanoleh Julia Gillard, Program Minggu

Abstract

Advertisement is a public media to promote a product or a service. Shampoo advertisements, especially the ones made for women, always show the advantages that the product gives to the customers. This study construed beauty standard in shampoo advertisements through the visual and linguistic elements, and found the differences in how they construe the beauty standard. This study used four different brands taken from Cosmopolitan magazine from 2016 to 2018. The brands are Love, Beauty and Planet, Loreal Extraordinary Oil, Treseme and Garnier Fructis. This study used the Multimodality approach using two modes, visual and linguistic elements. This study used Generic Structure Potential by Cheong (2004) to divide the linguistic and visual elements, then used Kress and Leeuwen's visual grammar to analyze the visual element (2006) and used Halliday's metafunction to analyze the linguistic elements (1978). Then this study analyzed the interplay of the visual and linguistic elements to construe beauty standards in society using O'Halloran SF-MDA (2008). The study shows that all of the shampoo advertisements have different ways to construe beauty standard in society through the visual and linguistic elements.

Abstract

This study examines the Disney movie, Coco (2017) through Stuart Hall’s Cultural Studies Theory and Murray Bowen’s Family System Theory to explore cultural traditions and family dynamics in the movie. Employing a qualitative method and collecting data primarily from documentation, this study investigates how Disney represents Mexican traditional culture, particularly Dia de Los Muertos, the the day of the dead, in maintaining individual identity and protecting family bonds. Hall’s theory emphasizes how the movie portrays cultural traditions and representations. Bowen’s theory reveals the importance of family roles, family reconciliation, emotional dynamics, differentiation of self,  and multigenerational transmission. The findings of this study contribute to a deeper understanding of cultural diversity and the complexities of familial dynamics. This study contributes on intercultural communication by illustrating animated movies may be effective and powerful instruments for emotional and cultural education connection.

Abstract

This research focuses on the discourse strategies, social features, and socio-cultural aspects employed in a GoJek advertising video on YouTube. The study adopts Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) within Fairclough's three-dimensional framework to understand the linguistic choices, social features, and how sociocultural elements persuade the audience. The paper outlines the descriptive qualitative methodology, including discourse and visual analysis. The analysis highlights rhetorical devices, figurative language, and social features as persuasive elements in the GoJek advertisement. This study contributes to understanding how discourse strategies and social features are used in advertising to influence audience perceptions and behaviors. The findings of the study indicate that GoJek's "Cerdikiawan" advertisement effectively utilizes linguistic techniques, social features, and persuasive strategies to attract the attention of the target audience and achieve its marketing objectives.

Abstract

Pendidikan memainkan peran strategis dalam membentuk karakter dan pola pikir generasi muda, terutama dalam menghadapi tantangan global seperti perubahan iklim, kehilangan biodiversitas, dan degradasi lingkungan. SMA N 12 Surabaya, yang meraih predikat Eco School terbaik 2023, menghadapi tantangan terkait pengembangan media ajar ekoliterasi, termasuk rendahnya kesadaran ekoliterasi di kalangan siswa dan guru serta keterbatasan sumber daya pendukung. Untuk mengatasi hal ini, program "Pelatihan Media Bahan Ajar Berbasis Ekoliterasi" diusulkan sebagai solusi untuk meningkatkan kompetensi guru dalam merancang bahan ajar yang inovatif dan relevan. Program ini menitikberatkan pada pemanfaatan teknologi dan media digital guna memperkuat efektivitas pengajaran ekoliterasi. Dengan penguatan keterampilan guru dan kesadaran ekoliterasi, diharapkan generasi muda dapat berkembang menjadi agen perubahan yang bertanggung jawab terhadap kelestarian lingkungan. Program ini menjadi langkah awal dalam menciptakan lingkungan pembelajaran holistik yang mendukung pendidikan berkelanjutan.

Abstract

As professional teachers, teachers are expected to be able to produce scientific works by conducting research, not only experimental but also classroom action research (CAR). Henceforth, from their research, they are expected to be able to produce a scientific article and publish it in reputable national or international journals. Due to the importance of scientific articles for the teachers’ career, therefore, this study aims to describe the profile of secondary school English teachers’ competencies in writing a scientific article. By using a rubric adapted from CARS model, it was found out that they still got many difficulties in writing a good scientific article. Those difficulties cover constructing and developing the introduction section which comprises general background information about the phenomenon being investigated, the results of relevant previous studies and theoretical framework, research gaps, novelty, and research objectives; elaborating the research method and discussion which refers to the results of relevant theories and previous studies; and neglecting the use of the last ten-year references. Regarding those unsatisfactory results, therefore, it is strongly suggested for the them to learn deeper by having more practices and trainings or workshops on conducting research and writing scientific articles as the output of their research.
