Abstract

Purpose – This study aims to examine the integration of Sharia values in human resource character building within Islamic banking institutions. The research highlights the importance of developing Islamic character-based human capital as a strategic foundation for achieving sustainable competitiveness in the Islamic banking industry. The study is motivated by the increasing need to align human resource strategies with Sharia principles to ensure both compliance and differentiation in the financial sector. Methods – The research uses a qualitative approach using a literature review of academic articles, reports, and policy documents published in the last decade. Content analysis was conducted to identify recurring themes, conceptual frameworks, and strategic implications of Sharia-based human capital development. Findings – The study reveals that Islamic character building, rooted in Sharia values such as Shiddiq, Amanah, Tabligh, and Fathanah, has a significant contribution to the development of trustworthy, competent, and value-driven employees. These values foster customer trust, strengthen organizational culture, and enhance the competitive advantage of Islamic banks. However, challenges remain in terms of practical implementation, organizational commitment, and balancing technical competencies with ethical-spiritual development. Research Limitations – As a literature-based study, the findings are conceptual and may not fully capture empirical variations across different Islamic banking institutions. Future research should include case studies or empirical validation to test the applicability of the proposed framework in diverse contexts. Value – This study contributes to the field of Applied Islamic Finance by providing a conceptual framework that links Sharia-based human capital development with sustainable competitiveness in Islamic banking. It highlights the strategic role of Islamic character building as a differentiating factor that cannot be easily replicated by conventional banks.

Abstract

Indonesia has enormous waqf potential, one of which is cash waqf. The low level of literacy and socialization about waqf has led to the realization of waqf in Indonesia. According to the Indonesian Waqf Board, the potential of the waqf sector in Indonesia, the realization of cash waqf in 2023 will reach 1.22%. This shows that there is a very large gap between the potential and realization of cash waqf collection so that support and innovation in cash waqf products is needed. The existence of Cash Waqf Linked Deposits (CWLD), which was launched by Bank Jatim Syariah in 2023, provides waqf benefits in the social and educational fields. The benefits provided by CWLD are in the form of scholarships for students at universities and providing business capital to MSMEs. In this CWLD process, Sharia Banks act as Nadzir in collaboration with Sharia Financial Institutions Receiving Cash Waqf (LKSPWU) and customers act as Wakif. CWLD funds deposited to Nadzir have a minimum amount of 1 million rupiah and a minimum duration of 1 year. The returns from this CWLD instrument will later be given to the mauquf alaih, and the original waqf funds will be returned to the wakif or customer.

Abstract

The growing demand for industry-ready human resources in Indonesia’s coffee sector requires vocational students to possess competencies in sensory evaluation and operational coffee skills. This community engagement program aimed to enhance vocational capacity through hedonic–organoleptic assessment and basic barista training among 33 students of the Agricultural Product Quality Control Department at SMKN 1 Tulungagung. The program employed an experiential learning approach integrating training, continuous education, and the Specialty Coffee Association (SCA) cupping protocol. Data were collected using pre-test and post-test assessments, practical observations, and participant feedback. The results demonstrated significant improvements in students’ understanding of sensory attributes, cupping procedures, and coffee operational skills, with increased confidence and competency in evaluating Robusta and Arabica coffee. The program also strengthened participants’ awareness of Indonesia’s coffee industry and vocational readiness. These findings suggest that industry-oriented experiential training effectively supports operational excellence and capacity building in vocational coffee education.
