Abstract

A growing problem among university students is academic burnout, and it has become more prevalent in recent years. With the increasing demand for school mental health services, online counseling interventions are gradually being regarded as a reasonable way to provide assistance to students with regard to burnout reduction. It was the researcher's aim to find out whether an online counseling intervention would be able to reduce academic burnout in a Nigerian undergraduate sample. A total of 80 Nigerian undergraduates were participants of this study. In this study, the participants were randomly assigned to the intervention group (n=40) and to the control group (n=40) by using a simple randomization procedure.  For the collection of data, the Oldenburg Burnout Inventory for Students and the Students School Burnout Inventory were utilised. The researcher applied repeated measures ANOVA to examine within and between groups' mean differences, reported η² to establish treatment effect size, and conducted posthoc analyses where mean differences existed using Holm's approach. The results of the study demonstrate that the online counseling intervention for academic burnout was effective in reducing the level of academic burnout among Nigerian undergraduates. As online counseling can help students reduce academic burnout, this finding opens the door to reach a larger number of burned-out students, such as those who live off-campus or are afraid of social stigma when seeking mental health care. This intervention has the potential to significantly improve student mental health related to burnout in other higher education settings like polytechnics. It is recommended that students should be encouraged to receive psychological supports and care from the university's counseling centre, not just during crises, but as a regular process of mental health support.

Abstract

There appears to be limited information regarding studies exploring parents' and teachers' views on appropriate jobs for learners with high-functioning autism (HFA). This study is significant because its purpose was to explore parents' and teachers' views on suitable jobs for learners with HFA at a special school in Johannesburg, South Africa. This study also sought to explore parents' and teachers' opinions on vocational methods for supporting learners with HFA. An interpretive paradigm was used as part of the qualitative research methodology. The data were generated from 12 selected participants using purposive sampling, including six parents whose children had HFA and six teachers of learners with HFA from various phases of the school. Semistructured interviews and document analysis were used to generate the data. The data were analyzed via thematic data analysis. The study revealed that teachers and parents of learners with HFA see jobs such as waiters, athletes, swimmers, soccer players, basketball players, handball players, baking, cooking, drawing, artists, gardening, carpentry, building, plumbing, car-washing, driving, building websites, filing, laminating, playing video games, emailing, printing, and photographing as appropriate future jobs for learners with HFA. The findings revealed that vocational methods that are useful for developing jobs that are perceived as suitable for learners with HFA are gardening, sewing, cooking, selling food, and computer training through vocational shadowing involving multiple stakeholders. The study highlights the importance of a collaborative approach among stakeholders in developing individualized support plans for learners with HFA, focusing on identifying, nurturing, and placing them in suitable vocational roles for lifelong employment. Consequently, special education curricula for learners with HFA in South Africa should prioritize vocational skills and be collaboratively designed by all stakeholders. Abstract

This study investigated the obstacles faced by learners with high-functioning autism in pursuing careers in sports, at a special school in Johannesburg, South Africa. It explored strategies that these learners can use to overcome obstacles they may experience in pursuing careers in sports. The study used a qualitative methodology informed by an interpretive paradigm and intrinsic case study design. The study involved eighteen participants, namely six teachers, six parents and six learners. Data were collected through focus group interviews, semi-structured interviews, art-based career collages and document analysis. The data were analyzed through thematic analysis. The findings show that these learners face numerous obstacles in pursuing sports careers due to a lack of resources, inadequate facilities, lack of parental involvement, discrimination, inadequate training of teachers, lack of sporting activities, and lack of appropriate school structures. The learners face personal obstacles, including verbal, writing, social, interactional, and behavioral deficiencies. The findings indicate a need to provide these learners with adequate and relevant resources and facilities at home, school, and elsewhere to tackle these obstacles.
