Abstract

Background: Dental anxiety, dental fear, and dental phobia are psychological conditions that commonly affect individuals, making dental visits and treatments daunting and distressing. Purpose: This study aimed to evaluate dental anxiety, fear, and phobia among Nigerians through a literature review design. The main outcome of the study was to assess the prevalence of dental anxiety, fear, and phobia among Nigerians. Methods: The research databases used were Google Scholar, PubMed, PsycINFO, CINAHL, and Cochrane. After independent assessors read the full texts to ensure eligibility, 23 studies were selected for inclusion, while 65 papers were excluded. These studies documented the existence of dental anxiety, fear, and phobia among Nigerians from 2002 to 2022. Results: Among the selected studies, there were 21 dental anxiety studies, one dental fear study, and one dental phobia study. The prevalence of dental anxiety in these studies ranged from 7.43% to 62.8%, the prevalence of dental fear was 36.8%, and the prevalence of dental phobia was 30%. Notably, dental anxiety studies were more frequently carried out among residents of South-Western Nigeria than residents of other regions of the country. The Modified Dental Anxiety Scale was the most commonly used instrument for assessing dental anxiety among study participants. Dental anxiety, fear, and phobia were commonly associated with dental health concerns, past pain experiences, and previous traumatic dental treatment among Nigerians. Conclusions: Dental anxiety, dental fear, and dental phobia affect both Nigerian children, adolescents, and adults, though the prevalence and extent of investigation vary by group and region. Further empirical studies are needed across different regions of the country, particularly in the South-Eastern and North-Eastern regions, focusing on hospitals, schools, and community-based settings. Psychological services can be implemented alongside dental treatments to help alleviate anxiety, fear, and phobias in Nigerian dental patients.

Abstract

Pressure during the learning process is a common thing experienced by students. At some points, this pressure will be beneficial in increasing fighting power and motivation, but on the other hand, high-pressure conditions will affect students' mental health. This condition was  also experienced when students entered the learning phase during the Covid-19 pandemic. Although several studies have revealed the effectiveness of distance learning during the pandemic, this study aims to reveal causal factors of learning pressure conditions during the pandemic such that it can trigger the emergence of academic stress. This study involved 750 students spread throughout Indonesia. Data gathering was through the use of a questionnaire with indicators developed from existing measuring tools. Data analysis using Structural Equation Model-Partial Least Square (SEM-PLS) with Model Measurement Analysis (MMA)  indicate loading, Cronbach Alpha, composite reliability, Average Variance Extracted (AVE) in fit conditions, and Structural Model testing also demonstrated  valid condition and fit. The analysis shows a positive relationship between the predictors of the structural model consisting of self-expectation, despondency, grade worriness, and workload, which impact student learning pressures during the pandemic. There is an effect of workload mediation on the relationship between self-expectation and learning pressure. In reducing and controlling student learning pressures during a pandemic, it is necessary to consider these factors in learning activities.

Abstract

The visually impaired group remains among the most unemployed despite laws designed to facilitate employment opportunities for the disabled population. This review article presents potential strategies for overcoming barriers experienced by students with visual impairments (VIs) during their career transition. An integrative literature review was employed by the authors. The integrative literature review allows authors to produce new frameworks and perspectives on a topic from a range of existing research data and ideas in a significant manner. Results of the literature review suggest that public education, adequate transportation and mobility skills, proper assessment of the students' skill development, the acquisition of relevant social and independent-living skills, adequate training for rehabilitation service providers, adequate access to prints, collaboration among professionals, and early career education and work experience are some of the strategies that can be adopted to help students with VIs overcome most of the challenges they experience in their career transition journey. Adopting the strategies discussed in this article may lead to a successful career transition for these students. One of the implications of this paper is that visually impaired students should be able to adapt to the career environment by acquiring relevant skills and being open to opportunities. Also, specialized job training and placement might make it easier for visually impaired students to find competitive work after earning an academic degree and raise their chances of embarking on a successful career path.

Abstract

This study aims to examine available literature on neurodiversity, particularly as it relates to neurodiverse students’ lived experiences. This study utilized the scoping review method to effectively map how research about neurodiverse students has been designed and conducted. Through a thorough search of four databases, articles were selected for data extraction and review based on the named criteria. Among all the studies reviewed, one of the themes that stood out was the view that only a few research directly assessed the needs of students with neurodiversity. It is also worth noting that of all kinds of neurological conditions, Autism Spectrum Disorder and Asperger Syndrome received due attention among all the papers about neurodiversity. Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and high-functioning autism received greater attention, followed by Asperger syndrome. Research efforts concerning the lived experiences of neurodiverse students are limited, particularly in Africa, where this research found no article that captured the lived experiences of neurodiverse students from their perspectives. These findings build on existing research by ascertaining whether neurodiverse students’ voices are acknowledged enough by researchers who could influence inclusion in academic planning, curriculum design, social activities and general academic life. Findings from this research imply that it would be of utmost assistance to researchers if gaps in neurodiversity research are identified to inform ideas for future research. Future studies ought to focus on African countries to explore the situation and academic life of neurodiverse students and not merely depend on the input of teachers, parents and neurodiversity professionals.
