Abstract

Maintenance of hemoglobin (Hb) levels in Whole Blood (WB) is crucial to ensure the quality and efficacy of transfusions, as the storage process can induce biochemical changes. Preliminary observations at RSUD Bahteramas indicated fluctuations in Hb levels during the early storage period. This study aimed to analyze the differences in Hb levels between the 5th and 10th day of WB storage at the Blood Transfusion Unit of RSUD Bahteramas. An analytical study with a cross-sectional approach was conducted on 10 WB samples selected using simple random sampling. Hb levels were measured using the LANDWIND Hematology Analyzer, and data were analyzed descriptively and with an independent t-test. Results showed that on day 5, only 50% of samples met quality specifications, whereas by day 10, compliance increased to 90%. A significant difference in Hb levels was observed between the two storage periods (p<0.05). It is concluded that optimal cold chain management can maintain Hb stability up to the 10th day of storage.

Abstract

Pre-transfusion testing is a mandatory procedure to ensure compatibility between donor and recipient blood; therefore, the selection of sample type is a critical factor in determining the accuracy of test results. The use of blood samples with anticoagulant EDTA or without anticoagulant (serum) is suspected to influence crossmatching outcomes. This study aimed to analyze the effect of sample type on crossmatching results at the Blood Transfusion Unit of PMI Nunukan Regency. A pre-experimental study with a static group comparison design was conducted on 30 patient samples using a total sampling technique. Crossmatching examinations were performed using the gel test method and analyzed with the McNemar test. The results showed that all EDTA samples (100%) were incompatible, while serum samples showed 30% compatible and 70% incompatible results. Statistical analysis indicated a significant difference (p=0.000). It is concluded that the use of serum without anticoagulant is more recommended as it reduces false-positive reactivity and improves the efficiency of blood transfusion services.

Abstract

Maintenance of hemoglobin (Hb) levels in blood is an essential requirement for regular donors to ensure donor eligibility and recipient safety. Observations at UDD PMI West Lombok indicated a high rate of donor disqualification due to low Hb levels. This study aimed to analyze the relationship between jogging activity and Hb levels among regular donors at UDD PMI West Lombok Regency. An analytical observational study with a cross-sectional design was conducted on 91 respondents selected using the Slovin formula. Physical activity data were collected through a Guttman scale questionnaire, while Hb levels were measured using the Hemo Control device. Data were analyzed using the Chi-Square test. The majority of respondents were male (73%), with the dominant age group being 40–49 years (42%). A total of 53% of respondents regularly performed jogging, and 62% had Hb levels within acceptable specifications. The Chi-Square test showed a p-value of 0.001 (<0.05). There was a significant relationship between jogging activity and hemoglobin levels among regular donors.

Abstract

The issue of blood availability remains a challenge in healthcare services, particularly in meeting transfusion needs in hospitals. Low participation in voluntary blood donation and limited public understanding, including among university students, regarding the importance of donation contribute to the imbalance between blood demand and supply. This community service activity aims to increase voluntary blood donation participation through the involvement of Universitas Dr. Soetomo students as agents of social awareness at RS Bhayangkara Watu Kosek. The activity was conducted offline through brief education, donor health screening, and blood donation implementation in collaboration with hospital healthcare professionals. The participants consisted of 50 Universitas Dr. Soetomo students, comprising 15 males and 35 females. Results indicated that all eligible participants successfully donated blood, and there was a marked improvement in students' understanding and positive attitudes toward blood donation as a form of social and humanitarian concern. This activity demonstrates that student-based community service is effective in supporting hospital blood availability while simultaneously building students' social character. The outcomes of this service serve as an important model for sustainable collaboration between universities and hospitals in supporting healthcare services.

Abstract

The issues of blood availability and the high prevalence of anemia among adolescents remain major public health challenges in Indonesia. Low health literacy, misconceptions about blood donation, and unbalanced dietary patterns highlight the need for systematic and sustainable educational interventions. This community service activity aimed to improve adolescents’ knowledge, attitudes, and behavioral readiness related to blood donation and anemia prevention through participatory education involving students of Universitas Dr. Soetomo as agents of change. The program was conducted offline through interactive lectures, dialogic discussions, simulations, and evaluations using pre-test and post-test methods. A total of 50 participants were involved, consisting of 15 males and 35 females. The results demonstrated an increase in the average knowledge scores from a moderate category in the pre-test to a high category in the post-test, accompanied by more positive attitudes toward blood donation and increased awareness of nutrition and iron supplementation. These findings indicate that student-based participatory health education is effective in enhancing adolescent health literacy. This community service initiative is important as a model of community empowerment oriented toward health behavior change and the strengthening of the role of higher education institutions in public health development.

Abstract

Hypertension is one of the primary health issues among the productive-age group, often remaining undetected due to low public awareness regarding routine screenings. This community service project aims to conduct blood pressure screenings while simultaneously increasing awareness of hypertension risks among the productive-age population in Menur Pumpungan Village. The activity was conducted offline through blood pressure measurements using standardized digital tensimeters, accompanied by brief education on hypertension and its prevention. The participants consisted of 100 individuals from the general public, including both productive-age men and women. The results indicated that a portion of the participants fell into the prehypertension and hypertension categories, while others maintained normal blood pressure levels. These findings suggest a significant potential for hypertension issues within the productive-age population. This initiative underscores the importance of routine blood pressure checks for early detection and strengthens the role of community service in supporting promotive and preventive health efforts at the village level.

Abstract

Abstract

Purpose: Syphilis remains a global public health concern, particularly in developing countries. This study aims to determine the seroprevalence of syphilis and assess its association with sociodemographic factors among female blood donors of reproductive age in Surabaya, Indonesia. Methods: This cross-sectional study analysed secondary data from 186 female blood donors aged 15–49 years at the Indonesian Red Cross (PMI) in Surabaya. Syphilis status was categorized as reactive or non-reactive based on screening results. Sociodemographic variables included age, marital status, education, and occupation. Descriptive and chi-square bivariate analyses were conducted using JASP 0.95.4, with significance set at p < 0.05. Results: The seroprevalence of syphilis among female donors was 25.3%. Significant associations were found between syphilis status and marital status (p = 0.000), age category (p = 0.001), and education level (p = 0.013). Unmarried women, adolescents aged 15–24, and those with lower levels of education had the highest proportions of reactive results. While occupation was not statistically significant (p = 0.228), students and housewives showed the highest infection rates. Conclusion: The high seroprevalence of syphilis among female reproductive-age donors in Surabaya is significantly associated with specific sociodemographic factors. Strengthening STI prevention programs and routine donor screenings is essential to ensure blood safety and improve reproductive health outcomes.
