Abstract

This study investigated the use of digital storytelling in improving students’ visual memory and writing skill of tenth grade students in one of senior high school in Tangerang, Indonesia. A total of 72 students are taken as the sample in the current study. The randomized pretest - posttest control group design was used in the study. Using quasi experimental research-non-equivalent control group design, the students in the experimental groups completed the process through digital storytelling. The students’ test and questionnaires were used to collect the data. In order to test whether there was an improvement within groups and to see if there were differences between groups, the hypotheses were tested using the t-test and obtaining gain scores. The result showed that the visual memory and writing skill of students undergoing digital storytelling technique and of those undergoing conventional teaching but no significant differences were found between the two conditions. They had same proficiency, focused and same concentration during the learning process, and the students had many opinions in experimental class. Based on the percentages, students’ post-test showed that students’ visual memory was more dominant than students’ writing skill after applying digital storytelling. Moreover, this research also found that students’ learning motivation was very good and created a good of class atmosphere in experimental class during the learning process by using digital storytelling.

Abstract

AbstrakThis research is conducted in order to improve students’ writing ability by using intensive reading at tenth grade of SMAN 14 Kabupaten Tangerang. In conducting this research the writer used qualitative descriptive as the method of the research. In this research used purposive sampling with the sample was 36 participants. To collect and analyzed the data, the writer used the information from observation, students’ writing test and interview. The result of observation and interview in this research showed that intensive reading can improve students’ writing ability on descriptive text. The result also supported by students’ writing test. It can be seen from students’ pre-test and post-test. The average score of pre-test was 30.1 or 35% and the average score of post-test was 55.4 or 65% of 36 students. The average score of post-test showed higher with increase score 25.3 or 30% of 36 students than their pre-test. It means intensive reading can improve students’ writing ability especially on descriptive text. From the result, the writer concluded that teaching writing descriptive text using intensive reading at tenth grade of SMAN 14 Kabupaten Tangerang can improve their writing ability. For the teachers and the further researchers, it is recommended that to implement this method in English classroom to improve students’ writing skill.Kata Kunci: descriptive text, intensive reading, writing ability

Abstract

Reading in English provides learners with the opportunity to develop their vocabulary, improve their comprehension skills. In this research, the writer wants to know the significant effect on students’ reading comprehension with using short English movies with English subtitled. This research used a quantitative method with quasi- experimental design. The population in this research were eleventh grade students from SMK Gemilang Modernland. During data collection, the writer gave a pre-test and post-test which included a total of five essay questions. The writer used IBM SPSS version 25 to analyze the data. The results of the research showed that the data were not normally distributed, and the data were homogeneous. Hypotheses testing used non-parametric statistics, the Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test which indicated that, Ha is accepted, and Ho is rejected. It can be concluded that there is a significant effect of using short English movies with English subtitled in improving students’ reading comprehension at eleventh grade students of SMK Gemilang Modernland in the Academic Year 2023/2024.
