This study investigated the use of digital storytelling in improving students’ visual memory and writing skill of tenth grade students in one of senior high school in Tangerang, Indonesia. A total of 72 students are taken as the sample in the current study. The randomized pretest - posttest control group design was used in the study. Using quasi experimental research-non-equivalent control group design, the students in the experimental groups completed the process through digital storytelling. The students’ test and questionnaires were used to collect the data. In order to test whether there was an improvement within groups and to see if there were differences between groups, the hypotheses were tested using the t-test and obtaining gain scores. The result showed that the visual memory and writing skill of students undergoing digital storytelling technique and of those undergoing conventional teaching but no significant differences were found between the two conditions. They had same proficiency, focused and same concentration during the learning process, and the students had many opinions in experimental class. Based on the percentages, students’ post-test showed that students’ visual memory was more dominant than students’ writing skill after applying digital storytelling. Moreover, this research also found that students’ learning motivation was very good and created a good of class atmosphere in experimental class during the learning process by using digital storytelling.

To complete the aim of this study, a quasi-experimental approach is used as a one-group pretest-posttest and regression analysis. Students' motivation, self-regulated learning, and reading comprehension were assessed for all students in the treatment. Analyses examined treatment effects on reading comprehension, motivation, and self-regulated learning. Results from this strategy-based instruction treatment did not reveal statistically significant results for the effect of reading comprehension ability. There was no significant difference between observed and expected motivation and self-regulated learning frequencies on reading comprehension ability. However, there was a different value between the pretest and post-test of reading comprehension ability.

Regardless to the facts that English is being taught to Indonesian students starting from early age, many Indonesian thrive in learning English. They find it quite troublesome for some to acquire the language especially to the level of communicative competence. Although Krashen (1982:10) states that “language acquirers are not usually aware of the fact that they are acquiring language, but are only aware of the fact that they are using the language for communication”, second language acquisition has several obstacles for learners to face and yet the successfulness of mastering the language never surmounts to the one of the native speakers. Learners have never been able to acquire the language as any native speakers do. Mistakes are made and inter-language is unavoidable. McNeili in Ellis (1985, p. 44) mentions that “the mentalist views of L1 acquisition hypothesizes the process of acquisition consists of hypothesis-testing, by which means the grammar of the learner’s mother tongue is related to the principles of the ‘universal grammar’.” Thus this study intends to find out whether the students go through the phase of interlanguage in their attempt to acquire second language and whether their interlanguage forms similar system as postulated by linguists (Krashen).

The objective of this study is to find the use of mind mapping on improving students’ writing ability, especially for biographical recount text at the tenthgrade students of SMAN 7 Kota Tangerang in the academic year of 2018/2019.The sample of this study were 35 students. This study used quantitative method with pre – experimental design by using one group pre –test and post – test. The result of the research shows that there is a significant difference in student’s writing ability between tenth grade students of SMAN 7 Kota Tangerang before and after taught using the mind mapping technique. It can be seen in the result of the study, the average pre – test score of experiment class students is 68.26 and the average post – test score of experiment class students is 85.40. It means that there is a significant difference in students’ writing ability between tenth grade students of SMAN 7 Kota Tangerang before and after taught using the mind mapping technique. The research hypothesis is proven that using mind mapping technique in teaching writing especially in recount text makes the students’ writing score higher.

Speech act is an act of communication that must be understood by the speaker and listener. Misunderstanding of speech act in conversation or dialogue can cause the misleading in the conversation. Therefore, this study aims to analyze the speech act types in daily conversation between students and parents at home. Qualitative research design was undertaken by the researcher to gain the speech act types. The research participants were twenty-four students of English Education department. Checklist was used to obtain the data. Moreover, the data were analyzed by using qualitative analysis by applying several stages from reduction, displaying and drawing conclusion. The result showed that several types of speech were found during conversation of students and parents at home. Those were directive, declarative, expressive and commissive. The dominant speech act type was directive because the parents asked the students to do something at home. Another finding showed that the students and parents did not use representative speech act in the conversation. It is because in the conversation between students and parents at home were informal conversation that seldom or never use representative. In short, it is not all speech appeared in the conversation because it depends on the function of speech act itself.

This study investigated the use of social networking site Telegram in improving students’ pronunciation of eleventh grade students in one of senior high school in Tangerang, Indonesia. A total of 24 students were taken as the sample in the current study. Non-randomized one class pretest-posttest design was used in the study. Using quasi experimental research one-class pretest-posttest design, the students in the experimental class completed the process through Telegram. The tests and questionnaires were used to collect the data. In order to test whether there was an improvement within the class, the hypothesis was tested using the t-test and obtaining the gain scores. The result showed that the pronunciation of students was improved. They were interested in learning through the media, wanted to learn new things, and active throughout the learning process. Based on the percentages, students’ posttest showed that the pronunciation of students was improved after using social networking site Telegram. Moreover, this research also found that the evaluation of learning model was good, the students’ learning motivation was very good, and made a good class atmosphere in the experimental class throughout the learning process by using social networking site Telegram.
