Abstract

One of the purposes of English Education Program of State Islamic Institute of Tulungagung, Indonesia, is to lead the graduates to do research on linguistics and language teaching and to write a thesis accordingly. However, the preliminary study shows that there is some repeatedly done research of the same topics, because the students commonly spend their time copying and pasting or modifying their seniors’ previous studies during writing the research proposals. If the advisors are not punctual in advising their advisees, it is possible to do some unintentional plagiarism which furthers block the contribution toward the body of knowledge in English language and education. Therefore, this article is intended to describe research trends of EFL students in English education. This descriptive study done through a questionnaire survey to 450 out of 849 students’ theses reveals that during the last eleven year, TEFL is the most popular research topic, because it is their mainstream topic. Still, they include other topics than TEFL which are mostly researched by using Descriptive (Qualitative). However, the students’ theses also indicate the development of implementing various research methods i.e. Quantitative, Classroom Action Research, and Research & Development. Moreover, although it is revealed that the research has already indicated the appropriateness of research objective with its title and research background, the EFL students’ theses need some improvement on writing research gap, reviewing related literature and previous studies, and on drawing conclusion and stating suggestion and research contribution as well. This study is then useful as the basis to make a research road map and important to avoid plagiarism and set a thorough research contribution to the body of knowledge on TEFL in Indonesia.

Abstract

In response to one of the demands for EFL learners to have cross cultural competence mainly on cultures of English speaking countries, this article describes assessment model implemented in Learning Gallery technique to teach Cross Cultural Understanding. Learning Gallery as one of the innovative ways of teaching content courses with an abundant coverage of materials proves to be able to help learners to be competent in some topics of cultures. This fact has been proved by implementing assessment model, namely Student-Self Test and Teacher-Made Test. The result of this study reveals that such an assessment model brings about improving the students’ cross cultural competence and leads them to be more independent learners. Moreover, through a reflective interview given at the end of the course, they claim that by developing their own test and doing their peer’s made test, they are experienced in test development in addition to be better prepared for the test. Accordingly, this study gives a meaningful insight for EFL lecturers teaching content courses to implement Learning Gallery technique with such an assessment model in order to help the EFL learners to be autonomously independent learners and competent in their own subjects learnt.

This study was done through a survey to 230 EFL learners of State Islamic Institute of Tulungagung, a small district in East Java- Indonesia, in order to get underlying basis of making a decision on learning policies for the sake of creating inspiring English teachers who are influential toward the success of English teaching and learning process. The instrument- Strategy Inventory for Students’ Perception on Inspiring English Lecturers (SISPIEL)- was developed in accordance to reviewing some related research articles about an inspiring teacher. The study reveals that to be an inspiring English lecturer, one should posses three skills namely attitudinal skills which are divided into three areas i.e. intellectual, emotional and spiritual, in addition to teaching technique strategies and skills of changing students’ learning style. Abstract

An English teacher should be able to develop English instructional materials which are more culturally appropriate to his students? cultural context. This is important to help them learn English in their own areas in terms of either the context or the content of instruction which then bring about producing the joy of learning English. Therefore, this paper discusses about my journey of implementing a theory-based practice method to teach students of teacher training education of English Program of IAIN Tulungagung in developing English Instructional Materials. In implementing this method I explained some theories related to developing English instructional materials and the students were guided to do need analysis and to practice developing the materials of English instruction. With this method the students focus on practicing English materials development based on the theories taught. The results of this research indicate that the students have rich learning experiences in developing instructional English materials in accordance to their own selected level of education compared to using fully theory based method to teach English Material Development (EMD).

English plays a very great role with the progress of globalization as a common international language for living in the 21st century. Thus, it is significant to promote the Indonesian students to acquire good literacy in both reading and writing in English.  To achieve this, English which is comprised of language skills and components, in Indonesia, is learnt formally from elementary school to tertiary level of education. However, reading is as the basic underlying skill that people should have and the development of reading skills serves as the major foundational academic ability for all school-based learning. Yet, the length of study time and the important of English and English instruction does not promote the students? good reading habit yet. Reading has still been as the most difficult activity. Therefore, the teaching and learning of English, particularly on the teaching of reading need to be reconsidered. All elements of society, such as government, teachers, students, and parents are responsible for the improvement of this English language teaching and learning particularly to promote good reading habit.

Abstract

This study was carried out in response to the demand that in this 4.0 era, Indonesian students should be proficient in English. Hence, in Indonesia, English has been taught and learnt since elementary school level up to tertiary level of education. This long period of learning should lead the students to be proficient in English which is proved by passing the minimum score of 450 TOEFL test. Yet, many of them did not meet the minimum score. Thus, this study investigates their perception and belief in learning English and the challenge of being able to be proficient in English. The study was done qualitatively through interviewing 80 students of non-English Department who were taking TOEFL course. It reveals that English is perceived like a two-side coin which in one hand, it is misperceived as a difficult subject because of its complicated rules to be memorized. In the other hand, it is thought to be joyful and meaningful that they believe as a means of bringing educational, social, and economical success. Therefore, they are challenged to be proficient in English. This study is then pedagogically implemented through building positive belief and perception that learning English is fun and helpful. Keywords: Belief; perception; challenge; and globalization era

Abstract

Research has so far focused on challenges and problems encountered by either students or teachers about online learning. Meanwhile, research on finding out their positive and inspiring EFL online teaching and learning is not much given attention yet. Thus, to contribute to the previous related studies, this study is aimed at finding out the motivating EFL online learning practices from the students’ view. The data of this research were collected from conducting online survey through a google link to 174 students of English Department, UIN Sayyid Ali Rahmatullah, Tulungagung, Indonesia who have experienced the shift platform of learning from offline to online. They were then interviewed at random. The results of this study reveal that the motivating EFL learning practices can be interchangiably carried out synchronously through their most favorable online application and asynchronously. Teacher-related factors and learning materials are also perceived to be the important elements to create motivating online teaching practices. These research results are pedagogically implemented to build an effective EFL online teaching and learning. Keywords: students’ perspective; motivating online learning; motivating online teaching.

Abstract

The purpose of this article is to discover the correlation among language elements- semantic, syntactic, pragmatic- and cognitive barriers towards the accuracy of Geometry proofs. This interdisciplinary study was carried out in response to the fact that students of Math neither focus on mathematical procedures nor integrate the topics of math into the representation of mathematical concept which brings about the constraint of achieving the goal of learning Math. This fact is resulted from either external or internal factors such as students’ background knowledge that is influenced by cognitive or communicative factors. Thus, effective communication consisting of semantic, syntactic, and pragmatic can be big barriers towards achieving learning goal. This study was conducted through a correlational study with 30 students of Math Department, IAIN Tulungagung Indonesia as the sample out of 120 populations. They were selected randomly based on their own availability and willingness to seriously take part in this interdisciplinary research. The instrument used was a set of achievement Math test on triangle congruency. The findings of this study prove that there is a correlation and negative effect of semantic, syntactic, pragmatic, and cognitive barriers towards the accuracy of Geometry proof. The result of this study is pedagogically implemented for tutors of Math to consider either oral or written communicative barriers which inhibit the students’ learning success in Math. Further studies on efforts of minimizing language barriers in Geometry proof accuracy is suggested to be conducted.
