Abstract

The research aims at describing the development of PROTADROID, an Android Table Program, to assist learners’ pronunciation practice by using non-native English speakers and investigating the affective aspects of using the PROTADROID. The method used was Research and Development (R&D) which has been chosen to produce a product and test the affective aspects of the product. In order to find out the affective aspect, a questionnaire was applied as an instrument in the data collection. Thirty participants were randomly selected from two Pronunciation Practice classes at Universitas Indraprasta PGRI Jakarta. Based on the development phases, PROTADROID is valid and practical. Further, the four affective aspects indicate that satisfaction is 88.2% (very satisfied), interest is 93% (very interested), attention is 76% (positive), and involvement is 85% (positive). Hence, it can be concluded that students generally understand and are capable of operating PROTADROID application with high interest.

Abstract

Abstract

Covid-19 pandemic forced lecturers and students to stay at home and manage online remote teaching systems. This current study explored the adaptations to emergency online teaching on EFL Academic Writing courses in the aspect of practices and perception from both lecturers and students at university. A mixed-method approach was selected using an exploratory sequential design. The participants were a lecturer and 51 university students who registered for the course at a private university in Jakarta. The instruments were the lecturer’s documents from 14 meetings and an online questionnaire sequentially. The data were then analyzed using descriptive as well as thematic qualitative data analysis. The findings showed that the lecturer’s adaptations consisted of digital learning platforms, material delivery, teaching methods/techniques, and writing activity and assessment.  Some students assumed that attending online remote teaching was confusing, while others had no adjustments and called it a new and valuable experience. In general, they perceived positive perceptions toward teaching’s practices. WhatsApp mobile messenger with content materials in PDF format using Genre-based approach considers being very effective in managing Academic Writing courses for emergency remote teaching during the pandemic.

Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic has changed the learning process from face-to-face to online. The socialization of Android as online learning media has been increasing during the pandemic. The implementation of educational technology makes Android an innovative and effective online learning media so that teachers and students can access it anywhere and anytime. Therefore, the research aims to socialize the use of Android phones as online learning media. The selections of works of literature are from several databases, including Garuda, Science Direct, Google Scholar, Research Gate, Web of Science, and Crossref. There are 30 articles selected and reviewed through a systematic review used as the research methodology. The journals were analyzed using a content analysis method; the diagrams and tables presented the data. The findings reveal that the Android application is user-friendly, innovative, and adaptive to the teaching and learning process; however, it faces challenges because a few students need help with the unstable signal, internet data and unsupported mobile phones. Nevertheless, Android is an applicable and effective online learning media for teachers and students.

Abstract

Coherence and cohesion play crucial roles in writing an abstract of an undergraduate thesis. By ensuring the coherence and cohesion of the abstract, EFL undergraduate students can enhance its readability, can facilitate the understanding of the research content, and can enable readers to grasp the main points efficiently. However, EFL undergraduate students often need help achieving coherence and cohesion due to their limitations in understanding and practicing academic writing. The research aims to analyze how the sentences in the abstract are related to one another through logical connections and to identify the cohesive devices like conjunction, reference, substitution, or ellipsis to make the abstract coherent. Three abstracts were chosen randomly from 2020 to 2022. Then, the researchers analyzed the data qualitatively in words or sentences using document analysis. The results show that two out of three abstracts are coherent. It is highly suggested for EFL undergraduates whose abstracts must be more readable to improve cohesive devices and use different conjunction and adverbial sentences. Therefore, the suggestion is that EFL undergraduate students use other transitions to link each sentence to make coherent text.
