Abstract

Caries is a dental problem that is most often found in elementary school-age children, dental caries experienced by children is closely related to the role of parents, the role of the mother is so important in maintaining dental and oral health in schoolage children. The prevalence of caries in the 5-9 years age group was 92.6% and in the 10-14 years age group the caries prevalence was 73.4%. This study aims to determine the role of the mother in the family to prevent child caries and DMF-T rate. The research design used in this study was cross-sectional quantitative analysis using a survey method with a total sample of 70 people using a total sampling technique. The results of this study show that the role of the mother with the DMF-T rate shows that the mother has a good role with a moderate caries rate of 17 respondents with a percentage (24%). The role of the mother is classified as good because the mother fully facilitates the child's needs for the importance of maintaining healthy teeth and mouth. From this study it can be concluded that family support, in this case the role of the mother, is very important for the DMF-T rate of elementary school children.

Abstract

Mouthwash is a solution used to clean the oral cavity to eliminate bacteria. Green and red betel leaves are believed to contain higher phenol content, which can inhibit bacterial activity. The purpose of this study is to determine the difference in effectiveness of a mixture of green and red betel leaf decoction as a mouthwash in reducing bacterial counts and plaque scores. This research is a quasi-experiment with a pretest and posttest controlled group design. The population consists of students from the Dental Nursing Department using purposive sampling technique, totaling 69 students divided into three groups, each with 23 samples using green betel leaf, red betel leaf, and a mixture of both decoctions as mouthwash. Effectiveness was tested with paired t-test, while differences were analyzed using Kruskal-Wallis and Mann-Whitney tests. The results showed that mouthwash with green betel leaf, red betel leaf, and a mixture of both decoctions were effective in reducing bacterial colonies and plaque on teeth. There were significant differences in reducing bacterial colonies among the three types of decoctions, but no differences in reducing plaque scores. The use of mouthwash from betel leaf decoctions is a good protective measure with easily obtainable and applicable materials for the community to avoid the use of chemical substances.

Abstract

Abstract

The family environment, especially parents, plays a very big role in developing positive behavior towards dental and oral health. Parental involvement in developing positive behavioral patterns in maintaining oral health is implemented in their children in daily life, both directly and indirectly. The way to improve dental and oral health is for parents to pay attention to children's behavior regarding dental health and children's eating patterns that consume little cariogenic food. The aim of this research is to determine the role of parents in maintaining children's dental and oral health at Abdi Agape Elementary School. The method used in this research is a quantitative method with a descriptive approach. The total population was 260 parents using a sampling technique, namely purposive sampling with the Slovin formula, namely 72 respondents. The results of this study show that parents who carry out their role in maintaining children's dental and oral health are in the good category for the role of parents in regulating food diet as much as 88.89%, the good category for brushing children's teeth as much as 76.39%, and the bad category for brushing children's teeth. control of children's dental health was 51.39%. This research can be concluded that the majority of parents' role in maintaining children's dental and oral health in the role of parents in regulating food diet and the role of parents in brushing children's teeth have good criteria. Then the role of parents in controlling children's dental health has poor criteria. Keyword : Role of Parents, Maintaining Children’s, Dental and Oral Health

Abstract

Oxidative stress has long been associated with increased risk for several diseases. Antioxidant is a molecule that inhibits the oxidation of other molecules and delays or prevents oxidative damage. Natural phenolic and flavonoid compounds are plant secondary metabolites directly contributing to antioxidant activity. Fibraurea tinctoria Lour, often called the yellow root, is a plant that has long been known in the traditional medicine of the native tribes of West Kalimantan to treat several diseases, including malaria, jaundice, and diabetes. This study aimed to quantify the total phenolic (TPC) and flavonoid (TFC) contents and antioxidant activity of the ethanol extract of yellow root stems. Yellow root stems were extracted by maceration in 96% ethanol for four days. The total phenolic, flavonoid, and antioxidant activities were measured using the Folin-Ciocalteu, AlCl3, and DPPH methods. Phytochemical screening showed that the ethanol extract of yellow root stems contains phenolics, flavonoids, alkaloids, saponins, tannins, and steroids/triterpenoids. The total phenol and flavonoid contents were 40.2 mg GAE/g extract and 61.2 mg QE/g extract, respectively. The ethanol extract of yellow root stems showed moderate DPPH scavenging activity, with an IC50 of 152.13 ppm. From this study, it can be concluded that this plant could be a potential source of natural antioxidants.
