<![CDATA[One of recent problems in our country is the habit of being consumerist – buying things which are not needed to update the trend. Some people think that it is not a big problem, but some do not. Avoiding its negative effect is the answer to this problem. This can be done through learning past experiences in the literary works, in this case Fitzgerald’s novel. The Great Gatsby depicts not only love but also consumerism. Through analyzing the sign of green light using Umberto Eco’s semiotic theory, we can see the bad effect of consumerism in the past and anticipate it for our future by applying its oppositional structure. The sign of green light is not merely an orgiastic feature. It is a tool for Fitzgerald to ‘fight’ consumerism effect.]]>

<![CDATA[There were two major aspects of English Language Education Study Program students of Sanata Dharma University that needed to be improved when they spoke and wrote in English. First was their grammar and the second was their pronunciation. For solving these problems, there were two tutoring programs. As one of those two programs, grammar tutoring program needs to be evaluated. Knowing its effectiveness in helping studentsâ improvement is crucial. Based on that reason, the analysis of the result of observation and questionnaire including studentsâ feedback is one of the media to measure the effectiveness of this tutoring program. Not only does this paper deal with the qualitative result of observation, questionnaire and studentsâ feedback, it also contributes the good practices that can be applied and some aspects that are needed to improve for future tutoring programs. The result shows that 84% of the students agreed that this program helped them to improve their skill and to understand more about the grammar materials.DOI: doi.org/10.24071/llt.2018.210206]]>

<![CDATA[Since the development of Artificial Intelligence (AI) has widely spread in many sectors of humans’ life, the studies of posthumanism where humans ask critically about their existence are needed. Knowing that, this research will deal with posthumanism (Herbrechter, 2015) drawn from two fanfiction stories entitled The Cyborg and Cyborg. Both stories are written by different authors from different countries. This study is a library research which applies comparative study as part of data analysis technique and the result of data analysis will be presented qualitatively. Preliminary result that is taken from first reading of the two stories deals with young authors who think that cyborgs have more humanistic values when they are being compared to humans. The researcher hopes that this study has insightful effect to pre-service students in dealing with the development of technology in this revolution industry 4.0.]]>

<![CDATA[Letters of a Javanese Princess is a translated literary work from a compilation of letters entitled Door Duisternis tot Licht (Out of Dark Comes Light). This work was written by Raden Adjeng Kartini and generally portrayed women's emancipation and education. As a root of women's education, tracing the history of the detailed concept of Indonesian education from this work means knowing the original concept of a good teacher and some teaching principles. Thus, Kartini’s teacher concept and principles were analysed in this article. Based on the analysis, the first finding shows that there are two teaching principles that Kartini has. The first is that teaching should include moral and intellectual aspects. According to Kartini, education does not only mean educating the brain but also having concern about morality and spirituality. The second is that the material of teaching should be suitable for the need of the era and students. The second finding shows that there are three points to be a good teacher: a teacher should get basic education for the profession, a teacher should be an excellent example for students, and a teacher should teach opened-mindedness, love, rights, and justice. Those important things are aimed to raise education for our nation.]]>

<![CDATA[The shift of the way of reading from printed material into non-printed material (reading from the computer, tablet, and smartphone) happened in the past few years ago. This shift affects students’ learning and reading processes inside or outside the class. Previous researches have shown the negative impact of reading on screen. This article explores students’ reading materials from the internet today in relation to its’ weaknesses when an adaptation of the Extensive Reading procedure was applied in Prose and Book Report classes of English Language and Education Study Program during even semester 2018. Students were free to choose their reading materials which consisted of two short stories and four novels for Prose class, three simplified novels and three original novels for Book Report class. Not surprisingly, most students showed their interest in reading some literary works taken from some internet sources. Knowing the weaknesses of the source is needed so the teachers or lecturers can anticipate the problem that can be caused by reading those materials. It was found that students’ reading material from a certain internet source did not have a good structure of English due to some causes. Further activities for students who chose that source could be done so that students knew the weaknesses and tried to overcome them.]]>

<![CDATA[This study examines real-life mental health which is coping mechanism in “The Whale” film. It addresses two issues, namely: coping mechanisms Charlie and Ellie employ and the differences of their coping mechanisms which impact their individual quests for a better life. This study employs document analysis and a psychological approach to coping mechanisms based on Lazarus and Folkman's model. Stuart and Sundeen further categorize as adaptive and maladaptive. The researchers find that maladaptive coping dominates both characters, leading to Charlie's health problems and Ellie's academic failure. The film ends with Charlie dying due to health issues, so the positive connection with Ellie comes too late. Meanwhile, Ellie, who dislikes school, still aspires to graduate but fails. Their quest for a better life hinges on being able to confront them in healthier ways. The study concludes that relying on unhealthy coping methods hinders a better life.]]>

<![CDATA[The process of transferring values and culture contained in local stories needs to be passed on to the younger generation, one way is by documenting local stories. Related to this, this article is one form of documentation of a local story entitled Watu Tumpeng from Bohol village, Gunung Kidul. The method for completing this story is in accordance with the methodology proposed by Appell (Appell, 2014) and the macrostructure elements of the story are identified based on Labov's narrative elements. The final result is a story that is better structured based on Labov's narrative structure including abstract, orientation, complicating actions, evaluation, results or resolution and coda. This study enriches the documentation of folklore, especially in the Gunung Kidul area.]]>

<![CDATA[The engagement with poetry is a personalized journey that transcends standardized methodologies. Key to this process is complete immersion in the poetic experience, alongside evaluators’ openness to both human and machine-generated translations from Indonesian to English. The overarching goal is to enhance students’ discernment and appreciation of these translated works. The study’s specific objectives involved comparing poetic translation assessments by evaluators for both human translators and machine systems. It was to assess students’ appreciation of poetry through the lens of both translation methods across three different institutions. The research employed a mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative and qualitative descriptive analyses, including descriptive statistics. The dataset comprised two Indonesian poems by Taufik Ismail, rated using a score as proposed by Nababan. Findings indicate that human translators outperformed machine systems in terms of accuracy, acceptance, and readability. While students from Institutions 1 and 2 preferred human-translated poetry, students from Institution 3 favoured machine-translated versions. This suggests that human translation quality remains superior. ]]>
