Abstract

The research is about the neurotic personality of the main character Ryuhei Sasaki in the film script "Tokyo Sonata" by director Kiyoshi Kurosawa. The research used qualitative descriptive research approach. The purpose of the study is to describe Ryuhei Sasaki's character using Karen Horney's psychoanalysis theory. Research data are scenes and dialogues related to research issues. The results of the analysis show that Ryuhei Sasaki's neurotic personality includes; power personality, social recognition or prestige personality, admiring personal personality, perfection and disbelief personality.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the moral development of the main character Jin Sakai in the video game Ghost of Tsushima using Lawrence Kohlberg's moral development theory. Ghost of Tsushima is an action-adventure game by Sucker Punch Productions released in 2020. The main data of this study is the narrative of the Ghost of Tsushima game, including the storyline, dialogue, and moral choices of the main character. A qualitative approach and descriptive method were used to explore the narrative, dialogue, and moral choices made by the characters in the game. Data were collected through observations of relevant cutscenes and gameplay, then analyzed using Kohlberg's six stages of moral development. The results showed that Jin Sakai underwent a complex moral transformation, starting from the preconventional phase of the legal and obedience orientation stage, the instrumental-relativist orientation stage, then entering the conventional phase of the interpersonal agreement orientation stage, the law and order orientation stage, until reaching the postconventional phase of the social contract orientation stage, and the universal ethical principles stage. This change is reflected through the inner conflict between maintaining the honor of the samurai and saving the people from the Mongol invasion in new ways that Jin Sakai created himself. These findings show that interactive media such as video games not only offer entertainment, but are also able to represent deep and relevant moral dynamics in the context of learning ethics and reflecting on human values in the digital era.

Abstract

In Japanese society, the main concept in communicating is to consider the other person's feelings by not speaking directly, too frankly or to the point.  One of the grammatical features this concept is Verb ~omoimasu which means in English ~I think (I think…, I think….). In the result of the essays by the students who take the Japanese Popular Writing course. In his essay students should use these verbs which also function as hedges to express opinions or ideas but ignore them because they may not understand that the use of these functional verbs is to maintain language politeness, especially in communicating in Japanese. Seeing this phenomenon, the writers tried to find out by identifying student essays that do not use these hedges, and the possible causes. Then by adopting the concept of communicating in Japanese that considers the feelings of the other person, the writers have found out how the implications of using these hedges have on the values of politeness in language that have effect on the politeness of behavior of students who take Japanese Popular Article Writing lectures. With research that adopts the concept of communicating in Japanese society, the writers can create a language politeness learning model that is expected to influence behavioral aspects.
