Abstract

The use of technology in education is significantly growing. Some research findings present a huge improvement in the evolution of teaching and learning activities. English teaching in Indonesia has many challenges since English, as a foreign language, requires innovative teaching strategies, tools and media. This paper attempts to investigate how SoundCloud, an online audio distribution platform, could be utilised in English language teaching. It is applied in Extensive English class where students present their oral book reviews. The data collections were obtained from questionnaire and teacher’s observation on students’ oral book review on SoundCloud. Each student was assigned to read a book, report it orally, and upload it on SoundCloud, while the other students listen and leave comment on it. The finding showed that it was easy for them to operate SoundCloud. Therefore, it created fun learning and encouraged students to learn how to communicate book review orally and listen well to other student’s review. Thus, according to the finding, it is recommended for the upcoming study to explore more on the use of SoundCloud in other ELT activities.

Abstract

The learning activities are carried Lecturer influence on student learning outcomes. Student learning outcomes PG PAUD during is still lacking, one possible cause of lectures is not utilize the media. The media is indispensable in the learning of the students, because it is very influential on student results. Students PG PAUD forwards are required to create and use a variety of media in teaching Early Childhood. Lectures by the media using APE is helping students to be aware of all kinds, benefits and how to use and create media in early childhood play activities. Given the importance of the use of media to Students PG PAUD, this research is focused on improving student learning outcomes using APE media through Cooperative Script method, especially on subjects Playing Games Early Childhood.Research using classroom action research. Classroom action research is a form of action research conducted in the classroom with the aim of improving the learning process. Subjects in this study were students PG PAUD UmSurabaya Semester 2. The data obtained from the study then used as the innovation of faculty to improve student achievement and create an atmosphere that fosters learning motivation lecture to students.

Abstract

ABSTRAKMata kuliah Intensive Course bertujuan untuk membekali kemampuan bahasa Inggris mahasiswa semester I. Namun, seringkali menemui perbedaan kemamampuan yang signifikan. Selain itu, ada 3 mahasiswa semester I tahun ajaran 2014/2015 yang berasal dari Thailand yang dihadapkan pada prose adaptasi. Sehingga, dibutuhkan teman yang saling mendukung. Maka, pelaksanaan lesson study menekankan pada aspek kognitif dan karakter. Penelitianini bertujuan untuk; (1) mendiskripsikan bagaimana penerapan lesson study dalam meningkatkan kemampuan Bahasa Inggris melalui mata kuliah Intensive Course, (2) Mendiskripsikan peningkatan karakter mahasiswa melalui penerapan lesson study yang meliputi Ketulusan hati/Kejujuran (Honesty), Belas Kasih (Compassion), Kegagahberanian(Courage), Kasih Sayang (Kindness), Kontrol diri (Self-Control), Kerjasama (Cooperation), dan Kerja Keras (Deligence/Hardwork). Penelitian ini menggunakakan pendekatan student-centered learning, penelitian ini memfokuskan pada empat siklus lesson study, yangmasing-masing siklus terdiri dari perencanaan (plan), pelaksanaan (do/open lesson), dan refleksi (see). Hasil penelitian menujukkan bahwa lesson study efektif dipraktikkan guna meningkatkan pembelajaran berkarakter pada mata kuliah Intensive Course karenamenujukkan peningkatkan kemampuan bahasa inggris sebesar 33,3 % dan peningkatan karakter ketulusan dari siklus 1- 4 menujukkan peningkatan 17,6 belas kasihan 26,5 keberanian 17,6 kasih sayang 8,8 kontrol diri 17,6 kerjasama 25,6 kerja keras 17,6.

Abstract

Along with the curriculum alteration in higher education which the former one changed into KKNI (Kerangka Kualifikasi Nasional Indonesia) based curriculum, several changes occurred in English Education curriculum for bachelor degree. Significant adjustment appears when Pre-service Teaching Program (PPL) is replaced by internship program (Magang). The internship program has not been done in once; otherwise, it is applied three times during the study period. They are Magang 1 (dasar) ,2 (madya) and 3.(karya). This reflective study attempts to find out how Edmodo is used as a collaborative tool for formative assessment in evaluate students’ activity in magang madya or Intermediate internship program and how the formative assessment using Edmodo gives benefit towards students’ internship activity . Thirty six English Education students joined this intermediate internship program and they were divided into four groups to complete their internship in four Muhammadiyah schools in Surabaya. In order to know the benefit of using Edmodo in this evaluation, the participants were asked to fill in the survey. The finding shows that the implementation of formative assessment by using Edmodo as a platform is helpful. The students can do some improvement during their internship activity by considering the feedback given by the supervisor. They also get opportunity to obtain written feedback without having to wait offline meeting with the supervisor in the class. However, the use of Edmodo as a platform is still limited where some students still consider that weekly oral feedback is still needed to complete the written ones.

Abstract

In improving the students' English abilities at private institutions in Surabaya, the English Discoveries platform was used in the English learning process in all faculties using the blended learning technique. The lecturers followed the instructions on utilizing English Discoveries in a Blended Learning environment. Meanwhile, students unfamiliar with new learning media as part of the blended learning technique must adjust to a new English learning experience. Student perceptions were essential to understand as evaluation for the next learning process. As a result, the purpose of this study was to find out what students feel about blended learning with English Discoveries, how it affected English language abilities, and what strengths and limits students had while utilizing the blended learning technique. This study distributed questionnaires to 329 students from seven faculties to determine student perceptions. This study showed that English Discoveries was an easy-to-use platform that aided and delivered a learning experience for students participating in blended learning activities. English students' English skills comprised stages of learning. Because of the flexible learning techniques, the students had plenty of time to examine the topic and practice one of their English abilities. On the other hand, students had issues with unstable internet network connections. As a result, learning must be carefully prepared before beginning to establish a pleasant learning environment, which necessitates strong cooperation between lecturers and students throughout the learning process. Dalam upaya meningkatkan kemampuan bahasa Inggris mahasiswa di universitas swasta di Surabayaplatform English Discoveries diterapkan melalui metode blended learning pada proses pembelajaran bahasa Inggris di semua fakultas. Para dosen telah diberikan pelatihan tentang penggunaan English Discoveries dalam metode blended learning. Sedangkan bagi mahasiswa yang baru dikenalkan dengan media pembelajaran baru dalam metode blended learning harus beradaptasi dengan pengalaman belajar bahasa Inggris yang berbeda dari sebelumnya. Persepsi mahasiswa sangat penting untuk diketahui sebagai bahan evaluasi dalam proses pembelajaran selanjutnya. Oleh karena itu, penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui persepsi mahasiswa  terhadap pembelajaran blended learning menggunakan English Discoveries, dampaknya terhadap kemampuan berbahasa Inggris, kelebihan dan kendala ketika pembelajaran menggunakan metode blended learning. Untuk mengetahui persepsi mahasiswa, penelitian ini menyebarkan angket kepada 329 mahasiswa dari 7 fakultas. Temuan penelitian ini mengungkapkan bahwa English Discoveries merupakan platform yang mudah digunakan, serta efektif dan efisien dalam membantu siswa belajar dalam blended learning. Tahapan pembelajaran yang terdapat dalam English kemampuan bahasa Inggris mahasiswa Para mahasiswa memiliki banyak waktu untuk mengeksplorasi materi dan salah satu keterampilan bahasa Inggris mereka karena metode pembelajaran yang fleksibel. Di sisi lain, mahasiswa mengalami kendala dalam hal koneksi jaringan internet yang tidak stabil dan biaya kuota internet yang mahal. Oleh karena itu pembelajaran harus dipersiapkan dengan baik sebelum memulai untuk menciptakan suasana belajar yang nyaman, hal ini membutuhkan kerjasama yang baik antara dosen dan mahasiswa dalam proses pembelajaran.

Abstract

Parents' expectations for children's educational attainment must be restrained by Covid-19 in 2020. In Indonesia, the virus has interfered with all levels of school to reform the mode of learning. An immediate decision made by the Ministry of Education was to implement full online learning. This situation uncovers obstacles that children and parents undergo. Even though the advantages of the policies have been perceived and published, the stakeholders need to express the problems too. This paper will exhibit parents’ disbelief toward online learning. The survey using questionnaire had been administered to 200 parents of elementary level students of Muhammadiyah Schools in Surabaya, Indonesia. The results show parents’ disbelief issues. Online learning is believed as burdensome to parents and children. It is also ineffective in accommodating competencies such as academic, affective, spiritual competencies, as well as talents and interests. Interviews were then conducted to investigate the factors: parents own limited time to assist children in studying, numbers of the family own limited gadget facilities, and children need to meet their teacher directly to understand the lesson. Finally, the implication after parents’ disbelief is revealed. Parents were becoming more emotional to the children along with their demotivation to the online learning as well as the lower academic, affective, and spiritual competence.

Abstract

This study aims to find the parents' response towards online schooling from home attended by their children. The spread of Covid-19 becomes a massive pandemic hazardous for the community. Its rapid transmission forces government to implement emergency policy to cope with this virus. The Ministry of Education and Culture decided to eliminate face-to-face learning on behalf of the Indonesian Government. The school is temporarily closed to disrupt a chain of Covid-19 transmission. As a replacement, face-to-face learning is transformed to be online learning. In this case, parents' roles become more prominent because they must provide learning assistance to their children to ensure that schooling from home can be followed properly. This exploratory research involved 200 parents as respondents to fill in the questionnaire, and later 12 parents were invited to proceed with further interview sessions. The result indicated a positive response to the implementation of online learning initiated by their schools. Its implementation is an appropriate option for preventing students from infectious Covid-19. However, some obstacles occur when parents cannot assist their children optimally due to their responsibility to accomplish their work and go to the office during school hours. It is suggested that teachers' assistance during learning from home can be improved to maintain effective learning. Moreover, parents hope that face-to-face school can be held right away after the pandemic is successfully handled.

Abstract

In the last three years till now, the use of online learning platforms significantly has become a trend caused by the pandemic. Many schools apply learning from home. It has been able to affect the students’ attitudes. Hence, teachers should think wisely about using the learning media. One of the popular online learning platforms, Kahoot!, is used by teachers. The impact of Kahoot! on students’ attitude is the researcher's concern. To support the research, the researcher applies a systematic review as research method. From a hundred articles, it has been filtered using a systematic review with PRISMA Flow into 38 articles obtained from Google Scholar, Garuda Ristekbrin, and Unpaywall. From 38 articles, it is able to state that Kahoot! is applied in learning all skills of English at once, writing skill, speaking skill, reviewing English, learning pronunciation skill, assessing vocabulary skill, conducting an exam of English, specific theme of English such as Events II, Recreation IV, Energy and Media, and tourism 1, grammar skill, reading skill, and vocabulary skill. Also, the students’ attitudes are mostly stated positive. The students are mostly motivated, better comprehending, excited, engaging, enjoyable, a good feeling, entertained, more active in class, paying attention, preferring the Kahoot!, and having the readiness to do with it in the next lesson. To recapitulate, the readers must be aware of common problems such as the internet and technical issues. Hence, the educators are able to keep the students’ attitudes in positive attitude.

Abstract

This case study explores the involvement of parents in accompanying their children in online learning activities at the elementary school level. The parents' demographics as participants in this research are very diverse. Due to the Covid-19 outbreak, elementary school learning has transformed from face-to-face to online. This has become a significant concern for parents because online learning is new. Participated by two hundred respondents and followed by twelve respondents in the interview stage, this research attempts to examine how parents perceive their roles and responsibilities in supporting their children’s online learning activities at the elementary school level, then investigate the main challenges faced by parents in supporting their children's transition from face-to-face to online learning during the Covid-19 outbreak. The result shows that parents put hardly any effort into fulfilling their roles as learning companions for their children. This situation can still be managed well for parents whose fathers work and the mother is a housewife because the mother has much time. However, this situation is very difficult for working mothers as they have to juggle their time to provide sufficient support. Thus, it can be concluded that if online learning continues to be implemented in a hybrid format at the elementary school level, it is imperative to establish clear and intensive communication among teachers, students, and parents regarding the learning modes employed to ensure greater effectiveness and efficiency. Furthermore, it is essential to implement systems for regular monitoring and feedback to assess the effectiveness of parental involvement and identify the challenges they encounter.

Abstract

ABSTRACTWriting skill is considered difficult for students because they get difficult to develop the idea, apply the grammar, do not have any vocabularies. The objective of this research are to describe the effetiveness of Numbered Heads Together technique, to know signficant difference of using NHT compares to talking stick in teaching writing hortatory exposition text. This research was done on April, 13th 2016 to May, 17th 2016. This research used experimental design that the sample used XI-IPA3 as control class and XI-IPA4 as experimental class of SMA Wachid Hasyim1 Surabaya. Based on result of the research, NHT is effective to be used because the result of independent samples test showed that tcount>ttable (4,139>0,172). It means that H1 is accepted, there is significant difference between student’s ability in control and experimental class.
