Abstract

The Benefits of Water for Plants: the Perspectives of Al-Qur’an and ScienceWater is the main element of life. The existence of water is fundamentally vital for creatures on earth, especially for plants which require water to grow. In the Qur’an, many verses discuss water, such as ethical principles with respect to the importance of water and its benefits for life. This study aimed to discuss the benefits of water for living things, especially plants based on the Qur’anic guidance and further compared with scientific theories. This study used the thematic interpretation method (mawdhu'i) with the thematic term model. The focus of this studywas the Qur’anic verses related to water, especially the word water associated with plants. This study showed that the word water (الماء) is repeated 63 times in 41 surahs of the Qur’an, with someassociated words, namely anzala (lowering), sabba (pouring out), asqa (watering / giving drink), ahya (reviving) and akhraja (spawning). The benefits of water for plants according to the Qur'an are ahya (reviving), as found in the QS. Al-An'am: 99. According to science, there are many functions of water for plants such as the main constituent of protoplasm and being a solvent for nutrients needed by plants

Abstract

This study aims to find out the important rules in interpreting the Qur'an. The Qur'an is the Muslim holy book, but the Qur'anic guide is not only for Muslims but for all humanity without exception. This is the meaning of hudan linnas. To carry out this strategic function, we must interpret the Qur'an with many conditions, such as Arabic, knowledge of the Qur'an (ulum al-qur'an), hadith, ushul fiqh, science and so on. These are the fundamental and essential foundations of the interpretation of the Qur'an. Today, interpreters sometimes do not obey these basics and lead people to the wrong path. For that reason, there are three things that intersect each other in the understanding and interpretation of the Qur'an by a mufassir, namely: mastering the rules of the Arabic language, understanding that a verse interprets other verses and masters the principle of munasabah.

Abstract

Higher-Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) have become an essential learning outcome in higher education, including Qur'anic studies, where students are expected to interpret religious texts in their contexts critically. However, assessment practices in many Qur'anic learning settings continue to emphasize knowledge acquisition rather than the integrated development of cognitive, psychomotor, and affective competencies. This study examined the contribution of a multidimensional authentic assessment approach to fostering students' HOTS in Qur'anic studies. A mixed-methods sequential explanatory design was employed. The study was conducted at the Faculty of Ushuluddin and Islamic Studies, UIN Imam Bonjol Padang, Indonesia, involving 50 undergraduate students enrolled in the Uṣūl al-Tafsīr wa Qawāʿiduhu course. Quantitative data were analyzed using multiple linear regression, while qualitative interview data were analyzed through thematic analysis to explain the statistical findings. The results showed that cognitive, psychomotor, and affective domains collectively made a significant contribution to HOTS. Among these domains, psychomotor engagement emerged as the strongest predictor, indicating that performance-based learning activities such as presentations, academic writing, and interpretive discussions play a central role in the development of higher-order thinking. The qualitative findings further revealed that conceptual understanding, active knowledge application, and reflective engagement operate as complementary processes that strengthen students' analytical and evaluative thinking. These findings suggest that authentic assessment should be viewed not merely as a means of evaluating learning outcomes but as an instructional approach that integrates knowledge, practice, and reflection to promote higher-order thinking. The study contributes to the growing body of research on authentic assessment by providing empirical evidence from the context of Islamic higher education and offering a multidimensional framework for enhancing HOTS in Qur'anic learning

Abstract

The escalating global environmental crisis demands Qur’anic interpretations that effectively address contemporary ecological challenges. As the Qur’an often conveys its ecological messages implicitly, contextual interpretation is required to reveal its universal relevance. Using a descriptive-analytical library research design, this study applies Abdullah Saeed’s contextual hermeneutics. Saeed’s four-stage framework was selected over Fazlur Rahman’s double movement theory and Amina Wadud’s hermeneutics due to its granular analytical pathway, which integrates classical and contemporary exegesis, linguistic analysis, qirā’āt, mufradāt, literary context, and socio-historical backgrounds. The findings demonstrate that the Qur’an goes beyond encouraging earthly stewardship by assigning humans an ethical responsibility to maintain ecological balance and environmental sustainability. Based on these insights, this study proposes Eco-Civilizational Resonance Tafsir—an interpretive model that aligns Qur’anic ecological principles with environmental ethics, social responsibility, and sustainable development, thereby contributing to contemporary Islamic environmental discourse and ecological transformation.
