Abstract

The government of Kutai Kartanegara Regency indicates that the problem of shrimp pond’s business production and profit has been going down and being stagnant in Muara Badak.  It is caused by capital source i.e own capital, ponggawa, bank loan and government loan.  And directly capital source influenced different of quantity, input and output cost.  In fact, the performance of lending mechanism is inefficient.  The objectives of this research were to analyze the effect and capital source condition and lending mechanism of capital source to production and profit.  Econometrics approach was used to solve the problem through production and profit function.  OLS and IPA were applied in this research.  The result of estimated parameter and perception of fish farmer related to lending mechanism were used as policy implication.  The result showed that capital loan from ponggawa, bank, and government were used only as working capital and the mechanism of capital loan from ponggawa was better than the other.  It was caused by easier requirement and procedure application for lending is better facility and its services, free of charge lending mechanism and relatively clearance time of credit.  Production rate of fish farmer who related to ponggawa were lower than the other.  However, profit rate of fish farmer who related own capital were higher than the other.   Key words: capital source effect, shrimp pond production, Muara Badak, Kutai Kartanegara

Abstract

Traditional shrimp farming in Indonesia is still dominant aquaculture and the one of large contributions in fisheries sector, namely provinces from Kalimantan, Java, West Nusa Tenggara (NTB), Sumatera, and Sulawesi. Pond farmers still maintain the old ways of managing their shrimp farming however some regions is found to apply sustainable shrimp farming with eco-friendly farm. In order to achieve sustainable income, the pond productivity is mainly calculated however pond productivities of those regions are not always correlated to the wider pond area and larger production. The objective of study is to explore traditional pond performance and its productivities in several provinces in Indonesia. The result shows that the shrimp farming are applying traditional method in pond management, water and soil quality is influenced by around the environment, the wide pond size/extensive pond, the opened pond, irregular pond shape, without feeds, built in the coastal areas and deltas as the brackish water pond, and harvest period after 4-6 months of cultivation. Seven provinces (South Sulawesi, West Java, East Java, Center Java, NTB, Southeast Sulawesi, and East Kalimantan provinces) in Indonesia contribute approximately 91% of total traditional shrimp farming production in Indonesia. Province with the second largest pond area in Indonesia is South Sulawesi province after North Kalimantan, however West Java is the biggest income of them compared, approximately IDR13.5 trillion. Government policy should facilitate improving environmental quality and sustainability in ponds in those regions.

Abstract

In order to encourage rural development and sustainable management of shrimp ponds in the Mahakam Delta area, the government and other organizations have initiated a mangrove planting program in green belts, inside ponds, and abandoned ponds as barren and inactive ponds that are degraded by pond extension through a mangrove planting program since 1999. It is indicated that the program's impact on the community in the Mahakam Delta could be realized when those local people participate more. The research involved 272 pond farmers and 33 stakeholders as the respondents. Analytical techniques for this study were descriptive statistics by applying the scoring on the Likert scale, and employing the chi-square test. The objectives of the study were (1) to measure pond farmers’ and stakeholders’ satisfaction with the mangrove planting program, (2) to analyze variables that correlate with pond farmers’ satisfaction with the mangrove planting program. The results showed that most pond farmers and stakeholders were well satisfied with the mangrove planting program in the Mahakam Delta. Pond farmers’ satisfaction was 7.7% in the highest score, 53.8% in the high score, and only 38.5% were at a low score. Also, 7.7%, 38.5%, and 38.5%, 15.4% of stakeholders’ satisfaction fell into highest, high, moderate, and low scores, respectively. In the analysis, three variables, which were the farming system adoption (Z1), education (Z2), and length of stay in the Mahakam Delta area (Z3) were associated with pond farmers’ satisfaction with the mangrove planting program. Therefore, the local people's satisfaction and characteristics can be considered in developing a strategy for the sustainability-enhancing of mangrove-shrimp farming management. Where, the government needs to realize the policies to mangrove trees planting within ponds, distance setting of green belt area, and improvement of skill and knowledge of local people.

Abstract

Background: Fish consumption preferences vary among communities. The issue of fish consumption achievement of East Kalimantan residents which has decreased compared to 2019 has encouraged the government to intensify programs, especially considering socio-economic factors for liking to consume fish. In this study, the issue of fish consumption is also associated with the residents’ knowledge of the benefits of fish nutritional content for health. Aims: This recent study aims to investigate the appreciation of East Kalimantan residents for the health of fish consumption benefits and to analyze factors which influence the fish consumption of East Kalimantan residents. Methods: Data collection was done through a questionnaire completed by 160 people in 10 regency and city sites in East Kalimantan with purposive random sampling method during January to March 2024. Also employing Multiple Linear Regression (MLR) is in data analysis. Results: Most of East Kalimantan residents (85%) appreciate the benefits of fish consumption for their health, even though there are still residents (15%) who lack information and knowledge about its benefits. The residents’ understanding and knowledge cover fish as a rich source of omega-3 fatty acids, high-quality protein, and related with reducing risk of heart disease, stroke, and certain types of cancer. The most residents (90%) approve that the fish protein content is of high quality of protein and vitamins-mineral. In the analysis, all variables that build this model have amounting to 82% (R2) affected into fish consumption residents. Partially, age, income, fish price, ethnic, education, and fish substitute variables significantly influence the fish consumption of East Kalimantan residents at p<0.05. Except, the status at the family variable, it has not influence partially to fish consumption of residents. Conclusion: Residents who understand and know of fish consumption benefit for health are high. The research findings indicate that various variables (age (X1), income (X2), fish price (X3), ethnic (D2), education (D3), and fish substitute (D4) variables) significantly influence the fish consumption of East Kalimantan residents. Hence, to stimulate awareness of fish consumption, the government has to support the residents through more measurable programs for the increase of fish consumption such as socializing the benefit of fish consumption for health and fish eating program.
