Abstract

Letter of credit (LC) is one of term of payments on export import transaction. The purpose of this study is to analyze the impact ofmacroeconomic variables changes i.e exchange rate, inflation and the Bank Indonesia (BI) rateto value of LC, with study case in one of Bank in Indonesia. This study also analyze the differences in impact of the commodity on export import by using LC between agricultural and non-agricultural products. The data is analyzed by using Error Correction Model (ECM) to investigate the long run and short run relationship between macroeconomic variables and value of LC over the period of 2013–2016. The result show that the long run relationship between macroeconomic variables changes and value of LC is significant. Over all, the result show that allof the macroeconomic in this study was significantly influence the value of LC export, whereas the value of LC import was not influence by inflation variable. Differences of the commodity on export import by using LC also showing the different impact to the value of LC especially for inflation variable. The value of LC export and import of agricultural products was not influence by inflation variable. The recommendation for the bank to optimize the LC transaction is when domestic currency have depreciation, then the bank can increasethe LC transaction on export side either on agricultural or non-agricultural products. And then for BI rate factor, the bank should be wary of increase of the BI Rate because it can be impact to decrease the LC transaction.

Abstract

AbstractBiodiesel industry in Indonesia commercially emerged in 2005 driven by concerns on energy security triggered by high oil price, increasing environmental demand to reduce CO2 emission, while leveraging on Crude Palm Oil feed stock availability. The Government of Indonesia mandated biodiesel to contribute 10.22 million kilo litre in 2025 energy mix target, beside current weak industry performance of 27% low utilization ratio of biodiesel plant installed capacity of 4.2 million ton per annum. A system dynamic model, called Indonesia Biodiesel Industry Dynamic Model, has been developed as a platform to study the structure and behaviour of the biodiesel industry enriched with inputs from biodiesel related experts panel discussion and interview and to simulate the impact of energy policy interventions, such as biodiesel subsidy, diesel subsidy reduction and removal, blending mandate, and diesel environmental tax to the performance of biodiesel production, industry profitability EBITDA and Carbon Emission Reduction (CER) during simulation period of 2005-2030. Based on the scenario 1 of MDIBI, targeted 10.22 million tones per annum contribution of biodiesel in 2025 Indonesia's energy mix would not be achieved with current structure and condition, mainly due to three factors, which are  (i) low mixture of biodiesel-diesel mandate, (ii) a relatively limited supply of CPO raw materials which must be allocated for competing demand from cooking oil, oleofoods, oleochemicals and biodiesel industries, and (iii) currently available limited public service obligation (PSO) market. Keywords: biodiesel industry, system dynamic modelling, energy policy, energy mix, Indonesian                biodiesel.

Abstract

EnglishBoyolali Regency is the largest milk-producer in Central Java Province. There are many market institutions serving the farmers in selling their products. Interaction between the dairy-cow farmers and market institutions incurs transaction costs. The farmers’ efforts to reduce risk of milk quality deterioration and to search market institutions create transaction costs resulting in profit reduction. Objective of this study is to analyze the transaction costs paid by the dairy-cow farmers. Transaction cost was computed using an accounting approach and its determinants were evaluated using a regression method. Primary data were collected through a survey conducted in Cepogo District, Boyolaly Regency, during April-May 2016 from 104 farmer respondents. The results showed that average transaction cost was Rp47,44/liter. Total monthly transaction costs paid by the village cooperative (KUD) members were Rp31.955, consisted of searching cost (Rp1.059 or 3.31%), negotiation cost (Rp724 or 2.27%), and enforcement cost (Rp30.173 or 94.42%). Total monthly transaction costs paid by the non-KUD members were Rp48.012 per month, consisted of Rp2.825 (5.88%), Rp1.204 (2.51%), and Rp43.983 (91,61%) for searching cost, negotiation cost, and enforcement cost, respectively. Transaction cost paid by the KUD members were lower than that paid by non-KUD members. Roles of cooperative in reducing transaction costs were not determined by membership status, but by its real services as reflected in increasing the number of cows per farm, shorter distance of the cooling unit to the farms and information provision to all members.

Abstract

EnglishAs a source of animal protein, beef has a strategic value in the Indonesian economy.  National beef production growth is slower than that of consumption. It leads to an increased import. Lower growth of national beef production is due to low productivity of beef cattle. One of steps to achieving beef self-sufficiency policy is beef cattle productivity improvement through optimizing artificial insemination (AI). This study aims to analyze the impact of technology improvements through increased application of AI dosage on the performance of beef cattle industry, the livestock subsector, and forecasting beef self-sufficiency achievement in Indonesia. This study utilized annual time series data from 1990 to 2011. The data were analysed using an econometric model with simultaneous equations. Parameters were estimated using a Two-Stage Least Squares (2SLS) method. Forecasting domestic beef production and demand uses the econometric models. Results of the study reveal that (a) increasing dosages of AI applications will increase domestic cattle population and beef production, lower domestic beef prices, increase national beef demand, as well as improve GDP and employment of livestock subsector, (b) technological improvements by increasing dosages of AI application will accelerate achievement of beef self-sufficiency in Indonesia. Estimasi parameter menggunakan metode Two Stage Least Squares (2SLS).

Abstract

EnglishThe condition of agriculture in dry land agroecosystems has many limitations both biophysically and socio-economically. As a result, farmers become less optimal in applying cropping patterns. This study aims to analyze factors that influence cropping patterns in dry land agroecosystems. The main data used for the study is the 2008 and 2017 Panel Petani Nasional (Patanas) PSEKP, Ministry of Agriculture. Descriptive statistics was used to describe cropping patterns association with household characteristics, land types, agroclimate, land tenure, and level of income. The influence of each factor on cropping pattern was measured with the Average Marginal Effect computed from the Random Effect Multinomial Logit estimation. Most respondents are self-land owner smallholders. The vegetable-corn-vegetable cropping is the cropping pattern that produces the highest income. The main factor affecting cropping pattern choice is volatility of water availability. Land type, maize price ratio, and level education of household head also significantly affect the cropping pattern choice. It is recommended that the farmers efficiently use the available rain water by appropriate selection of crops and using water conservation technique. Irrigation tools facilitation should create flexibility for the farmers in choosing the optimal cropping patterns.

Abstract

Indonesia is the third largest rice producer in the world, at the same time it’s a country that imports rice from various countries. The government has provided input subsidies to increase rice production and reduce imports. Modes of rice farming in Indonesia is relatively diverse, from conventional to modern, even in the post-harvest process. The objectives of this study are: to analyze the impact of post-harvest handling on food loss and to analyze the relationship between paddy or rice loss with the quantity and value of fertilizers subsidy and paddy production in Indonesia. The estimated food (rice) loss includes the stages of harvesting, threshing, drying, and milling stages and distribution. Farmers use various technologies in processing rice: serrated sickle in harvesting, power thresher in threshing, and flatbed dryer in drying; while rice milling was done using conventional rice miller. The total rice loss reached 6.91 million tons in 2014 and continued to increase to 8.14 million tons in 2018. The growth rate of fertilizer subsidy value is higher than those of subsidized fertilizer quantity and paddy or rice loss. The results indicated that growth rates of paddy production and rice loss was lower than increased of government subsidy for fertilizer.

Abstract

Demand for rice increases with population and over time. However, the challenges to meet the increasing demand for rice are constrained by some factors: conversion of agricultural wetland (paddy field) to nonagricultural uses, deterioration of irrigation channals, increase scarcity of water, and increase intersectoral competition of water use. These conditions have raised the concern of water irrigation distribution efficiency in rice production. Agricultural sector has to produce more rice with less irrigation water. In addition, water irrigation charges (IPAIR) are also problematic in the area, since there is no water charge. The purpose of this research is to estimate the economic value of water irrigation at Vander Wijce irrigation areas in Yogyakarta, to determine the more appropriate water charges; and to evaluate the differences in water values with respect to their locations (upper, middle, and lower areas), cropping intensity, and rice productivity. Farmers at the upper irrigation areas could plant rice up to three times a year, while at the lower areas only twice a year. The productivities of rice were also different between these two areas, where the upper areas used more water and resulted in higher yields compared to the lower ones. Water values was estimated using Wicksteed's product exhaustion approach. These results implied that the values of water were higher at the upper areas compared to the lower ones. The estimated value of water was about Rp 44/m3 in the upper areas, while in the middle and lower areas were about Rp 32 m3/ha and Rp 23 m3/ha, respectively. Since there is no water charge in the area, there is no fund to cover the costs of water distribution and maintenance. This could lead to unsustainable irrigation management. The above estimated water values could be used as benchmark, the maximum level, by the local government of Sleman and the farmers groups in the irrigation areas in determining the irrigation water charges and maintaining the sustainability of irrigation water services. However, this water charge has to be followed by the improvement in water management system to maintain effective and efficient water distribution among the farmers.
