Abstract

Corallivorous gastropods, Drupella cornus are living in the Indo Pacific coral reefs. To assess the distribution of the snails at Bunaken National Park in Indonesia, a study has been conducted on three zones established in three main islands of the park: core, tourism, and exploitation zones. The zones represent degrees of human interventions in which the least intervention is for core zone, moderate for tourism zone and high for the exploitation zone. The results showed that degrees of human interventions are related to the density of snails where the least human intervention zone (the core zone) had low numbers of snails while the high human intervention (exploitation) zone had high numbers of snails. Three corals in the zones that were preferred by the snails were: Montipora spp., Acropora spp., and Porites spp. The numbers of snails living on the corals followed the percent of coral cover© Gastropod pemakan polip karang, Drupella cornus hidup di areal terumbu karang Indo-Pasifik.

Abstract

Samples were collected from Nain Island and Arakan Cape in Bunaken National Park area, in February 2012. The collection was conducted by snorkeling along the coastline in the morning, when the tide was low. This study found 15 species of slugs from nine families and 5 species of macro algae from three families. Communities of gastropod snails in both research stations have similarity index value of 63%, while the macro algae communities have similarity index value of 75%. This indicated that the gastropod snails and macro algae from both study sites were relatively similar concerning their species composition. Some slugs such as Strombus labiatus, Strombus sp 1, Strombus urceus, Pyrene scripta, Cerithium rostratum, Cymatium vespacium, Phasianella solida, Vexillum vulpecullum, Gyrineum bituberculare and Clanculus atropurpureus were more likely to choose the Halimeda Opuntia macro algae as their habitat. Ecological niche of Pyrene scripta on the Arakan Cape and Nain Island showed the highest value (maximum). This indicated that Pyrene scripta are generalized species that lived on nearly all types of macro algae. Keywords: Bunaken National Park, gastropoda, macro algae, similarity community, ecological niche.

Abstract

There are crab species that live in the forest and supratidal areas, on sandy, rocky, and muddy coastal areas. The aim of this research is to identify the morphology, of meristic crabs and the effect of the moon phase on species diversity. Sampling locations were on the coast of Pondang Village and Lopana Village, sampling using the roaming method and carried out at the two lowest low tide phases during the dead moon and full moon phases, during the lowest low tide crabs were generally found with walking legs. Based on the identification of the morphology of crabs found on the coast of Pondang Village and Lopana Village, East Amurang District, South Minahasa Regency, there are six species of them Ocypode ceratophthalmus (Stimpson, 1858), Grapsus albolineatus (Latreille in Milbert, 1892), Eriphia sebana (Shaw and Nodder, 1803), Atergatis floridus (Linnaeus, 1767), Pilumnus vespertilio (Fabricius, 1793), Episesarma mederi (Edwards, 1853).
