Abstract

This research examines the interpretation of the meaning of the song Boku no Taiyou from the Japanese idol group AKB48. The lyrics of this song are the object of research because they are considered to reflect values and interpretations of meaning that have relevance to people's lives. Semiotic theory is used to explore the hidden meanings in song lyrics. The theory used to analyze the lyrics uses two theoretical approaches, the semiotic theory by Michael Riffaterre and the moral theory by Nurgiyantoro. Michael Riffaterre's approach provides a view of how signs are used in creating hidden meanings and messages. Meanwhile, Nurgiyantoro's moral theory is used to analyze the moral messages contained in the song lyrics, especially in the context of relationships between individuals and the importance of support in achieving dreams. The analysis results provide an in-depth understanding of how AKB48 uses figurative language and moral messages in their song lyrics to convey positive values and encouragement to their listeners.

Abstract

The phenomenon of cultural diversity in the workplace increasingly influences the dynamics of employee performance and interactions. This study aims to deepen the understanding of the impact of cultural intelligence and knowledge sharing on employee performance, with job satisfaction serving as a mediator. Employee performance is defined as the ability and outcomes achieved by employees in fulfilling their tasks. This research employs a quantitative approach, utilizing four questionnaires based on a 1-5 Likert scale to measure cultural intelligence, knowledge sharing, performance, and job satisfaction. The sample consists of 116 employees from X Company, a coal-fired power plant located in Cirebon, West Java, selected based on specific criteria. The results of the analysis indicate that job satisfaction mediates the relationship between cultural intelligence and performance, but does not mediate the relationship between knowledge sharing and performance. This study provides implications for multicultural organizations to focus on the development of cultural intelligence to enhance employee satisfaction and performance.

Abstract

This research investigates the impact of toxic leadership and workplace ostracism on employees' intentions to leave their jobs, with psychological distress as a mediator and gratitude as a moderator. Job turnover intention refers to an employee's desire to permanently quit their job, influenced by factors such as toxic leadership—characterized by authoritarian and unpredictable behavior—and ostracism, where individuals are ignored by colleagues. Both toxic leadership and ostracism can lead to psychological distress, which encompasses stress and emotional discomfort affecting mental well-being. Conversely, high levels of gratitude may mitigate the intention to leave. Utilizing an explanatory research design with a quantitative approach, the study employed five measurement instruments: a turnover intention questionnaire, a toxic leadership questionnaire, a workplace ostracism questionnaire, a psychological distress questionnaire, and a gratitude questionnaire. Conducted across three construction companies in West Jakarta, the study involved a sample of 150 employees. Findings indicate that toxic leadership and ostracism predict employees' turnover intentions, mediated by psychological distress. However, gratitude was not found to moderate the relationship between psychological distress and turnover intention in this model. The research highlights the importance of addressing toxic leadership and ostracism to reduce turnover intentions by developing improved policies and interventions that alleviate psychological distress among employees.

Abstract

Work-life balance refers to the equilibrium between work and personal life, characterized by company support in resolving family issues, opportunities to pursue hobbies outside of work, and availability of time for family. Job demand is an individual's perception of work-related demands, such as heavy workloads, tight deadlines, and requirements to display specific emotional states (calm, friendly, etc.). Burnout is a condition of stress marked by feelings of emotional exhaustion (easily irritated/angry), depersonalization (indifference toward others' conditions), and a sense of incompetence in completing tasks/work. High job demand tends to increase the likelihood of burnout. This study aims to test the work-life balance model as a resource that can anticipate and prevent job demands from leading to burnout. The participants in this study consisted of 114 employees. The instruments used in the research include the Maslach Burnout Inventory, the Job Demands-Resources Questionnaire, and the Quality of Work-Life Scale. Based on the analysis using Spearman Correlation, the results indicate that work-life balance can predict lower perceptions of job demands. Lower perceptions of job demands can, in turn, predict lower levels of burnout. The findings of this study provide a theoretical model that explains work-life balance as an antecedent that should be promoted to prevent stress, whether in the form of stimulus-based stress (job demand) or response-based stress (burnout).
