Abstract

This study aimed to explore the effectiveness of Pela Gandong in the process of social reconciliation and peacebuilding in Ambon. Using a sociocultural approach, this qualitative research attempted to examine the theory of social reconciliation in the peace-building process between two conflicting groups. The data that had been collected in the form of interviews, FGDs, and documentation sources related to pela gandong were qualitatively analyzed. The results of the research showed that structural segregation becomes a barrier to the process of social reconciliation because some communities and local elites still maintained inter-group beliefs about the existence of a common enemy due to past conflicts. Pela gandong played a role in strengthening social reconciliation amid actor antagonisms that were difficult to subside, factions among local elites that were still strong, and people who were still trapped in past traumas. Based on the spirit of pela gandong, the government and civil society, including educational institutions in Ambon, presented a peaceful atmosphere with various initiatives, starting from the formation of multi-ethnic villages, providing facilities and infrastructure for harmony, strengthening the curriculum for local wisdom "Pela Gandong" and “Pendidikan Orang Basudara” (POB), to strengthening interfaith mediation institutions in Maluku: Baku Bae, Maluku Interfaith Institution, and Maluku Interfaith Institution for Humanitarian Action. All of them were an effort to create a peaceful Ambon, make Maluku a laboratory for peace, a learning medium for other regions in Indonesia.

Abstract

This article tries to portray the development of religious orientation in schools through a thorough investigation of the emergence of ROHIS in senior high schools and perusing its dynamics. After having been introduced in the mid-1980s, ROHIS has attracted many people. In the beginning it merely supported religious activities in schools, but gradually its importance became undeniable. Its significant contributions in endowing students with additional religious knowledge made ROHIS a well-recognized organization amongst students and teachers.DOI: 10.15408/sdi.v17i1.470

Abstract

Research in various public institutions of higher education in Indonesia, which forms the basis of this article revealed that - especially Islamic - books have been greatly influential in the dissemination process of individual thoughts, especially among campus Islamic activists. The original thought of an individual is influenced by his/her prior experiences, In the modern context, this means, by the most important media: books. Thus, the process of the transmission of ideology among campus Islamic activists is shaped by reference works published by Islamic publishers. It is therefore safe to say that books are the means of transmission for campus Islamic movements in IndonesiaDOI: 10.15408/sdi.v15i2.533

Abstract

Abstract This study analysed how Indonesian Muslim diasporas utilise social media to express their national identity. This research employed a qualitative approach, utilising the symbolic interaction theory of G.H. Mead and virtual ethnographic analysis to examine the Indonesian Muslim diaspora's activity on Twitter (now known as X) to maintain an intense connection with Indonesian public discourse through actively posting their notion on the platform. The research discovered that several Indonesian Muslim diasporas who are active on Twitter have experienced intimidation because of their tweets. Twitter, which should be a free space to express opinions, has become a space of judgment. Tweets that criticise social, political, economic and religious issues affect their lives; they are threatened, intimidated, and dehumanised in various ways, and their space is restricted. Not only on national issues but intimidation also applies when they respond to international issues, such as the Palestine conflict. Their activism in tweeting about Palestine resulted in the termination of their work contracts and ostracisation in academic circles in Europe. This research shows the critical role of Twitter as a medium for disseminating national ideas and ideas that strengthen the national identity of the Indonesian Muslim diaspora. They leverage social media for digital activism, shaping national identity, democracy, and governance. Their participation extends beyond discourse into transnational political engagement, where they construct counter-public and intersectional narratives that challenge dominant perspectives. Through these digital spaces, they contribute alternative viewpoints on socio-political issues, influencing both national and international discussions.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the construction of public opinion and perception regarding religious moderation in the context of Mount Semeru incident, Lumajang, Indonesia, (2022). This research employs a qualitative approach, utilizing perception theory and virtual ethnographic analysis to examine Twitter users' responses to a viral video depicting individuals disrupting traditional offerings at Mount Semeru, also investigates how Twitter as a social media platform influences public perception of religious moderation. The findings reveal three distinct response categories: opposition, support, and moderation, which contributed to digital conflicts. To minimize digital conflicts, especially intolerant responses on social media, there is a need to strengthen religious moderation on social media through education content grounded in Islamic scriptures (Quran and Hadith), Indonesian state ideology (Pancasila), and collaboration with religious authorities via digital media formats. The research demonstrates the significant role of social media in shaping public perceptions of religious tolerance in contemporary Indonesia.
