Abstract

The Malay language is of great importance in understanding Indonesian society and history. As the root of Indonesia’s national language, Bahasa Indonesia, the language has become part and parcel of the social-political and cultural formation of the diverse communities throughout Indonesia. Also, the role of the Malay language in Indonesian nation building proceeded alongside the historical course of Islamic development there. In line with the development of Islam in parts of Indonesia and the Southeast Asia region at large, Malay emerged as a lingua franca that was widely used as a media of social interaction, political diplomacy, commerce and, more importantly, Islamic expression. This article discusses the history of the Malay language in relation to its role as the language of Indonesian Muslims. The article also examines the contribution that the language has made, through the course of history, in uniting the people into a single nation-state—Indonesia.DOI: 10.15408/sdi.v21i3.1219

Abstract

Nico J.G. Kaptein, Islam, Colonialism, and the Modern Age in the Netherlands East Indies: A Biography of Sayyid ‘Uthman (1822-1914), (Leiden & Boston: Brill. 2014), xv + 317 pages. The book reviewed was the published result of long, scholarly research efforts. Nico Kaptein, the writer, presents a biography of Sayyid Uthman, an ‘ālim out of the Hadrami community in nineteenth century Dutch East Indies.  The biography is comprehensive in nature. More importantly, the author shows this Muslim scholar as having partipated in, and therefore contributed to, the structuring of Indonesian Islam. The content arrangement of the book follows the life story of Sayyid Uthman.  As an ‘ālim, Sayyid Uthman engaged in current Islamic issues in the Indies, and served as an advisor for Arab affairs for the Dutch colonial government. His being an advisor has long been a subjet of debate. For Muslims, the decision of Sayyid Uthman to cooperate with the government is unacceptable. The Dutch are not only unblievers (kāfir) but also anti-Islam. It is the issue of Uthman being an advisor that becomes the main discussion of the book.DOI: 10.15408/sdi.v22i1.1391

Abstract

A. C. S. Peacock and Annabel Teh Gallop, eds. 2015. From Anatolia to Aceh: Ottomans, Turks, and Southeast Asia. Oxford: The British Academy by Oxford University Press. This book comprises of some articles with the major contribution to investigating further the relation between the Ottoman in Istanbul and Muslim kingdoms in Southeast Asia. Using the archival sources from the Ottoman period, those articles highlight new information on the Ottoman-Southeast Asia network, which has been rather neglected from any scholarly studies. Especially in relation with the Acehnese kingdom, the discussions of this book demonstrate that Aceh was the only Southeast Asian Islamic kingdom which made serious efforts to make relation with the Ottoman. Issues related to politics, commerce, and military aids constituted the main substance in the relation they established in the sixteenth century, which then continued in the seventeenth century in the form of intellectual and religious network. The period of the nineteenth century witnessed the re-emergence of the political issue in Aceh-Ottoman relation, as Aceh looked for Ottoman protection to face the Dutch military invasion.DOI: 10.15408/sdi.v23i2.3259

Abstract

The pre-colonial Archipelago period of Indonesian history witnessed rapid Islamization. The kingdoms or sultanates served as the centre of emerging Islamic socio-political and cultural dynamics. In this article, the crucial role that the kingdoms played in facilitating Islamization will be examined, giving strong emphasis to how they emerged as hubs for ‘ulamā’ who Islamized  the people of the Archipelago. This process created an Islamic network with the ‘ulamā’ introducing rulers and society to Islam. Islamization unified the people in the “lands below the winds” under one religion. This connecting process was further facilitated by the rise of Malay language alongside the Jawi (Arabic) script as a medium for intra-regional communication as well as Islamic expression. The experience of being Islamized created a collective memory of being part of “the others” and laid a strong foundation for the unification of Indonesian society today.DOI: 10.15408/sdi.v25i2.5682

Abstract

Francis R. Bradley. 2016. Forging Islamic Power and Place: The Legacy of Shaykh Dā’ūd ‘Abd Allāh al-Faṭānī in Mecca and Southeast Asia. Honolulu: University of Hawaii Press. 212 pp.This book presents the discussion on Malay Muslim of Patani in southern Thailand today. Taking the social and intellectual life of the father of Patani ‘ulama, Syaikh Dā’ūd ‘Abd Allāh al-Faṭānī (1769-1847), as the main subject of research, this book reveals an important period of Patani history when intellectual activities, centred in Mecca, were transformed into social and moral power for their revival in the 19th and early 20th centuries. The fall of Patani kingdom into the Siamese power in 1786 led the rise of new elites coming from religious circles, the ‘ulama. Under the influence of Syaikh Dā’ūd al-Faṭānī, the ‘ulama engaged in intellectual network and transmission of currently Meccan-based discourses, mainly those in the works of Syaikh Dā’ūd al-Faṭānī, to Patani and Malay peninsula. And this process was strengthened with the rise of pondok, traditional Islamic learning centre, providing the Muslims of Patani with new social and cultural capital for their struggle for identity in the courses of  development.DOI: 10.15408/sdi.v24i3.6215

Abstract

Bustān al-Salāṭīn by Nūr al-Dīn al-Ranīrī (d. 1659) is a leading Malay text on Islamic history. Written in the 17th century in Aceh, one chapter of the Bustān was dedicated to the history of Aceh. This paper discusses how the Bustān described the formation of the sultanate, the rulers who were in power, their political behaviour, and the methods of statecraft they tried to establish. The text shared the emerging intellectual discourse in 17th Century Aceh, in which al-Ranīrī’s reform of Muslims’ religious practices to uphold sharī‘ah-based principles gained its prominence. With the support of his patron, Iskandar Thani (1636-1641), al-Ranīrī’s Islamizing efforts for Aceh are reflected in the Bustān. This paper argues that the Islamic ideals and terms found in the Bustān signify the history of Aceh and profile the patron, which sets Bustān apart from previous Malay texts of historical writing.

Abstract

Ismail Hakki Kadi and A.C.S. Peacock (eds.). 2022. Ottoman-Southeast Asia Relations, 2 vols. Leiden and Boston: BrillThe glorification of the Ottoman Empire, often legitimized by specific Muslim groups in Indonesia in the past two decades, has frequently steered toward myth-building rather than the advancement of knowledge through historical sources. This book represents an endeavour to present comprehensive data on the relationship between Southeast Asia and the Ottoman Empire through research centred on the theme of “Islam, Trade and Politics across the Indian Ocean” during the years 2009-2011, with a focus on the archives of the Turkish Presidential Archives in Istanbul. The book unveils crucial puzzles in the history of Islam in Southeast Asia concerning diplomatic relations with the Islamic superpower, encompassing the period from the early encounters with Western powers and continuing into the Colonial Era. In addition to examining primary sources of diplomatic relations between the kingdoms of Aceh, Kedah, Riau, Jambi, and Brunei with the Ottoman Empire, this book also reveals the political, economic, and socio-religious dynamics as they unfolded in Batavia, Singapore, and the Philippines.
