Abstract

Abstract This study was intended to improve the students’ ability in speaking through ICARE model at the third semester students of English Department of Muhammadiyah University of Makassar. This research employed Classroom Action Research consisting of two cycles where each cycle consisted of four meetings. The instrument used in this research was speaking test. The data obtained from the test in the end of each cycle was analyzed quantitatively. The findings showed that there was significant improvement on the students’ speaking ability in terms of accuracy and fluency in which the mean score of diagnostic test was 5.17, the mean score of cycle I was 6.06 and the mean score of cycle II was 7.21. AbstrakPenelitian ini dimaksudkan untuk meningkatkan kemampuan siswa dalam berbicara melalui model ICARE mahasiswa semester III Departemen bahasa Inggris di Universitas Muhammadiyah Makassar. Penelitian ini menggunakan penelitian tindakan kelas yang terdiri dari dua siklus yang mana setiap siklus terdiri dari empat pertemuan. Instrumen yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah Tes speaking. Data yang Diperoleh dari tes di akhir setiap siklus dianalisis secara kuantitatif. Temuan menunjukkan bahwa ada peningkatan yang signifikan pada kemampuan berbahasa siswa dalam hal ketepatan dan kelancaran di mana nilai rata-rata tes diagnostik adalah 5.17, Skor rata-rata pada siklus I adalah 6.06 dan skor rata rata pada siklus II adalah 7.21.

Abstract

This research aimed to find out what challenges were faced by EFL students at the English Department Muhammadiyah University of Makassar in their grammatical knowledge. This research used descriptive quantitative. The population of this research was the fourth semester of the English Department Muhammadiyah University of Makassar. The sample or the subject of this research was 50 students taken by accidental sampling technique. The researcher used the questionnaire as the instrument of this research. The result showed that challenges were mostly found by the students in developing their grammatical knowledge were: do not  know how to organize the sentences to be a good paragraph, lack of self-confident, lack of vocabularies, lack of tenses and the biggest challenges were learning environment was too crowded,  limited of time  and lack of facilities.

Abstract

The objective of the research was to find out whether or not the used of digital storytelling can improve students’ speaking fluency at SMA Muhammadiyah 9 Makassar. The researcher used a purposive sampling method and took only class XII the sample of the research which consisted of 37 students. In addition the researcher applied an instrument of the research namely oral test. In pre-test and post-tes the researcher gave topics through digital storytelling to stimulate the students to speak in front of the class. In pre-test and pos-test the students one by one to speak face to face with the researcher in the class.Based on the result of the data analysis it was found that the mean score of pre-test was 3.45 and the mean score of post-test 4.54. by applying the level of significance 0.05 with the degreeof fredom (df) = 37 - 1 = 36, it was found that the result of t-test was 10.33 which was greater that t-table value 1.688. It mean that the alternative hypothesis was accepted and Null hypothesis was rejected. It could be conducted that digital storytelling materials was significant effect toward students speaking fluency through asking and answer question.

Abstract

The objective of this research was to found out whether or not the use of board race language game can improve students’ speaking ability at SMA Negeri 9 Makassar. The researcher used a pre-experimental research as design method and gave pre-test, treatment and post-test. The sample of this research was XI MIA 5 class of SMA Negeri 9 Makassar which consisted of 30 students. The sample was taken by used Purposive Sampling Technique. Based on the result, the mean score of students’ pronunciation and vocabulary before and after the treatment improved. The students’ pronunciation scores from 58.14 to be 84.25 and the students’ vocabulary scores from 57.69 to be 87.29. The differences mean score of pre-test was higher than pre-test. The value of T-test in pronunciation 18.38>2.04 and the value of t-test in vocabulary was 20.57>2.04. The alternative hypothesis is accepted and the null hypothesis is rejected. It means that using of board race games as a teaching technique in teaching speaking can improve students’ speaking ability at eleventh grade of SMA Negeri 9 Makassar in term of accuracy.

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengeksplorasi dan memahami faktor-faktor yang mempengaruhi penerapan strategi kesopanan dalam interaksi antara dosen dan mahasiswa di Universitas Muhammadiyah Makassar. Secara khusus, penelitian ini ingin mengungkap bagaimana aspek pendidikan, budaya, dan pendidikan karakter memengaruhi cara dosen dan mahasiswa menerapkan kesopanan dalam komunikasi akademik. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif dasar dengan metode wawancara mendalam untuk mengumpulkan data dari para partisipan tentang pengalaman, persepsi, dan pemahaman mereka terkait kesopanan dalam komunikasi. Partisipan dalam penelitian ini terdiri dari tujuh dosen dari Universitas Muhammadiyah Makassar dengan latar belakang pendidikan dan budaya yang beragam. Selain itu, informan mahasiswa berasal dari Jurusan Bahasa Inggris, yang diajar oleh dosen-dosen tersebut. Data dikumpulkan melalui wawancara mendalam yang semi-terstruktur, yang juga terbuka untuk memungkinkan para partisipan berbagi pandangan mereka secara lebih luas tentang kesopanan. Data dianalisis menggunakan proses reduksi data, display data, dan interpretasi. Dalam proses reduksi, data yang diperoleh dari wawancara disederhanakan, dikategorikan, dan disaring untuk menemukan tema-tema utama. Kemudian, data disajikan dalam bentuk display yang mempermudah analisis mendalam. Terakhir, dilakukan interpretasi untuk menemukan makna di balik data dan menyimpulkan faktor-faktor yang memengaruhi strategi kesopanan yang digunakan oleh dosen dan mahasiswa. Hasil penelitian mengungkapkan beberapa faktor yang memengaruhi strategi kesopanan dalam lingkungan akademik: (1) latar belakang pribadi: ini mencakup faktor-faktor seperti usia, jenis kelamin, dan kepribadian. Di antara faktor-faktor tersebut, usia merupakan faktor paling signifikan, karena strategi kesopanan bervariasi tergantung pada apakah mahasiswa berkomunikasi dengan dosen yang lebih tua atau lebih muda; (2) jarak sosial: faktor kedua adalah jarak sosial. Semakin dekat hubungan mahasiswa dengan dosen, semakin tidak formal komunikasi yang terjadi; (3) status sosial: dosen memegang peran kekuasaan yang lebih tinggi di kelas, yang memengaruhi penerapan strategi kesopanan; dan (4) konteks atau situasi: faktor terakhir yang memengaruhi strategi kesopanan adalah konteks atau situasi di mana komunikasi terjadi.

Abstract

Reading critically is a fundamental skill to be successful readers. The mental process of reading will work by seeing, analyzing, reviewing, and confirming text and context deeply. Critical reading is the    ideology of the text which follow the critical thinking rules.  The objective of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of Gallery Walk activities in teaching critical reading to the fourth-semester students in Universitas Muhammadiyah Makassar. This study employed a pre-experimental research design to measure the effectiveness of Gallery Walk activities in improving students’ critical reading comprehension. Pre-tests and post-tests were administered to collect the data, which were then analysed using quantitative methods. The primary instrument used in this research was a critical reading comprehension achievement test designed to measure three components of critical reading skills. The findings of the study indicated that students’ critical reading comprehension prior to the implementation of Gallery Walk activities was at a relatively low level, as indicated by the pre-test mean score of 58.06. After the implementation of the Gallery Walk activities, the students demonstrated a substantial improvement in their critical reading comprehension, with the post-test mean score increasing to 86.94. Furthermore, the paired-samples t-test analysis showed a statistically significant difference between the pre-test and post-test scores (t = 25.044, p < 0.05), indicating that the implementation of Gallery Walk activities significantly built students’ critical reading comprehension in the EFL classroom. The implementation of Gallery Walk activities enhances students’ critical thinking skills through active participation in joyful and meaningful learning processes

Abstract

This study aimed to find out the cognitive process dimensions and the arrangement of chapter 1,2,3,4, and 5 of speaking tasks in the “English for Nusantara” textbook for Junior High School. This study employed a content analysis method with a qualitative approach based on Revised Bloom’s Taxonomy, determining the extent to which the textbook promotes students' cognitive skill development in speaking English. The object of study is chapter 1,2,3,4, and 5 of speaking section in English for Nusantara Textbook. The data obtained through twelve of tasks in speaking sections. The findings revealed that the speaking tasks have five cognitive process categories: remembering (C1), understanding (C2), applying (C3), analyzing (C4) and creating (C6). However, the only categories evaluating (C5) were not found in the analyzed tasks. Additionally, the arrangement of tasks is sequence, which is in this book followed a progression from Lower-Order Thinking Skills (LOTS) to Higher-Order Thinking Skills (HOTS). It is suitable for EFL learning because the pattern in English for Nusantara is designed to develop students' thinking skills step by step. However, there are still gaps in covering more complex cognitive categories, indicating a need for further improvements to ensure that students receive a more comprehensive learning experience. Therefore, the conclusion was the speaking tasks in English for Nusantara textbook for Junior High School published by Ministry of Education and Culture was categorized as LOTS level.
