In examining this case above, the researcher applies the Animal Farm novel as the research data source. The methodology applied in this research is a descriptive qualitative method that used the technique of data collection, the technique of data analysis, and the technique of data validation. Furthermore, in analyzing the case, the writer elaborates it with transformational leadership theory elaborated by Charis (2020) and one of the literary theories elaborated by Abrams in Teeuw (1984) as guidance to analyze the Character portrayed in the work. The results show that transformational leadership successfully rebuilt society, particularly in educating society and in triggering society to operate the machine for them.

Abstract

This study aims to gain a deeper understanding of how self-determination theory is implemented in higher education. This review adheres to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) recommendations. The systematic review begins with an analysis of the identification procedure. Next, the best papers published between 2012 and 2022 were selected to explain how to compare significant aspects and efficient methods. The significance of self-determination theory to the evolution of the teaching profession determined the selection of these papers. The results are divided into three categories, with the following themes emphasizing the examined literature the most. Researchers use their findings to maximize the implementation of SDT in the classroom. The second section consists of data collection. Questionnaires, interviews, pre-and post-tests, and online discussion forums were used for data collection. Finally, the researcher has created a list of several published issues for analysis based on the most recent study themes.DOI: 10.26905/enjourme.v7i1.7978

Abstract

English teachers are required to have the ability to plan, organize, and evaluate English learning effectively. English should also be fun for students because it can be a factor in making them enthusiastic. Ice-breaking is one of the methods used to increase students' interest in learning English. This research aimed to analyze the impact that occur to students after the application of the icebreaker method. This research was conducted using mixed-methods research at SMA Muhammadiyah 5 Makassar in the academic year 2023-2024. This research used 31 samples from class X MIA. The research instruments were questionnaires, note-taking, recording, and interview questions. The results showed that the impacts after the application of the icebreaker method were: increasing students' knowledge; making students more diligent; stimulating creativity; increasing vocabulary; and motivating students. The score of the questionnaire before treatment was 12,89%, and the score of the questionnaire after treatment was 19,01. Thus, it could be argued that students' interest could be increased through the use of ice breaker. This research can be useful for English teachers to improve their understanding of students' problems, increase students' interest in learning, identify their problems, and solve their problems in learning English.

Abstract

This study aimed to strip the journey of colonised and coloniser subjects in the short story Di Atas Kereta Angin (DAKA). The exploration used Homi K. Bhabha's postcolonial concept to see the characters' walking into hibridity space. By used a qualitative method, the results of this study show that there is mimicry in the way Dullah and bumiputra characters look and behave in front of Europeans. The mimicry was triggered by the justice and equality discourse and the changing times produced by Europeans. Although the mimicry as mockery in the eyes of one of the Europeans, Jan Buskes. The mimicry of Dullah and the bumiputra character makes them a hybrid subject, situated between Java and Europe. This hybrid condition creates a space of hybridity. The space of hybridity in DAKA is basically a negation created by the relationship between the coloniser and the colonised. On the one hand, Dullah and the bumiputra use it to achieve the justice and equality created by Kees and the other colonies. But on the other hand, it also became a space for the coloniser, Kees, to discipline Dullah's body. The existence of the narratives of justice and equality that were used to soften the hearts of Dullah and other natives, turned out to create a space of hybridity-ambivalence. With this ambivalence, DAKA is the one that negates the author's own view that Dutch figures have a humanist side. Furthermore, through DAKA, Bhabha's concept of mimicry as mockery does not apply universally, for example Kees condition, instead he deconstructs it. Finally, through DAKA, postcolonial studies can be used even though DAKA is set during the colonization era in the Indies. This means that postcolonial can speak beyond a specific time and space—when colonisation was still going on, before, or after.

Abstract

Some literary experts conveyed that literature is recommended to be utilized in language teaching especially if the lecturers are knowledgeable on literary integration for language teaching. Experts define the literary use in language teaching as literature-based instruction (LBI). Hence, this research aimed at studying the lecturers’ perception towards literature-based instructional approach before and after implementing it in the reading class. In exploring the issues, this research investigated two research questions (RQs): a) what are the lecturers’ perceptions towards LBI before implanting it in a reading classroom? b) What are the lecturers’ perceptions towards LBI after implanting it in the reading classroom? Furthermore, a qualitative method with a case study approach is employed in this study. The participants consisted of two lecturers who taught in the English education department at Universitas Sawerigading Makassar. To gain the data, the researchers utilized a semi-structured interview which was adapted from McDiarmid's (1995) interview model. All the collected data were furthermore analyzed using Braun and Clarke's (2006) thematic analysis. The results showed that both lecturers' perceptions were varied for both before and after implementing the LBI due to different academic background and experience. The lecturers who’s academic and research interest were focusing on literary studies would have better perception towards LBI. Definitely, with an eye-eagle vision towards LBI, the lecturers could potentially touch many aspects and values in his/her literary teaching as the advantages of LBI.
