Abstract

The aims of this study is to investigate the experiences of 12 Makassar University lecturers lecturers in planning and writing their English language teaching (ELT) textbooks. The results of interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA) revealed that, despite a number of pedagogical issues and challenges, these lecturers had a positive attitude toward writing their ELT textbooks, as revealed by an in-depth semi-structured individual interview (IDI) and a focus group discussion (FGD). They believed that creating teaching resources for their classes would not only help them meet their students' linguistic demands, but would also improve their lecturing experience. This article argues that writing a textbook for classroom use is a form of pedagogical reflective practice for lecturers that allows them to provide their students with appropriate activities and lessons for effective language teaching and learning, drawing on Tomlinson's notion of the importance of personalizing and localizing ELT textbooks to maximize students' learning. The findings' ramifications are addressed, and recommendations are made.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the semiotics of hate speech in social media instagram using the theory of Ferdinand de Saussure (1900) and Charles Sanders Peirce (1900). Semiotics is the study of signs or an epistemology about the existence or actuality of signs in society. This study aims to analyze and describe some netizens who utter hate speech that should not be released on social media instagram in the comments column of the personal account that is the object of the research. Based on the findings above, we found 5 types of hate speech that are in accordance with the theory expressed by Ferdinand de Saussure(1900) and Peirce (1900). 2 examples of hate speech used by netizens expressed by Ferdinand de Saussure include Signifier, and Signified, and 3 hate speech used by netizens expressed by Peirce include Index, Icon, and Symbols. In this study, we used descriptive qualitative research methods where this research uses naturalistic data, which is one of its main characteristics. The results of this thesis prove that based on the result of the above analysis, most netizens comment using symbolic hate speech. Specifically, a symbol is something that can stand for concepts, ideas, and items that are used as references. Less people use markers for hate speech thus a symbol can be any action, gesture, picture, sound, pattern, or occasion that communicates and transmits meaning on social media platforms like Instagram.

Abstract

This study investigates the impact of Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools on improving reading comprehension, vocabulary acquisition, and reading fluency among IAIN Palopo and Universitas Negeri Makassar students. With the increasing integration of AI in educational settings, this research aims to assess how personalized learning environments provided by AI can enhance students' literacy skills. A mixed-methods approach was employed, combining quantitative data from pre-and post-test scores with qualitative data from student and lecturer interviews. The results indicate significant improvements in reading comprehension, vocabulary acquisition, and reading fluency, with moderate to large effect sizes observed across both institutions. Additionally, qualitative findings reveal that AI tools motivated students, increased engagement, and provided personalized learning experiences. However, challenges such as technological access and infrastructure limitations were identified, particularly at Universitas Negeri Makassar, which affected students’ ability to engage with the tools fully. The study concludes that while AI tools can significantly improve reading skills, successful implementation requires addressing infrastructure issues and ensuring the cultural relevance of learning materials. The findings suggest that AI should complement traditional pedagogical practices rather than replace them, offering a blended learning approach that supports deeper learning. This research contributes to the growing body of knowledge on AI in education and highlights the importance of adapting AI tools to local contexts to maximize their effectiveness.
