Abstract

This study aimed to strip the journey of colonised and coloniser subjects in the short story Di Atas Kereta Angin (DAKA). The exploration used Homi K. Bhabha's postcolonial concept to see the characters' walking into hibridity space. By used a qualitative method, the results of this study show that there is mimicry in the way Dullah and bumiputra characters look and behave in front of Europeans. The mimicry was triggered by the justice and equality discourse and the changing times produced by Europeans. Although the mimicry as mockery in the eyes of one of the Europeans, Jan Buskes. The mimicry of Dullah and the bumiputra character makes them a hybrid subject, situated between Java and Europe. This hybrid condition creates a space of hybridity. The space of hybridity in DAKA is basically a negation created by the relationship between the coloniser and the colonised. On the one hand, Dullah and the bumiputra use it to achieve the justice and equality created by Kees and the other colonies. But on the other hand, it also became a space for the coloniser, Kees, to discipline Dullah's body. The existence of the narratives of justice and equality that were used to soften the hearts of Dullah and other natives, turned out to create a space of hybridity-ambivalence. With this ambivalence, DAKA is the one that negates the author's own view that Dutch figures have a humanist side. Furthermore, through DAKA, Bhabha's concept of mimicry as mockery does not apply universally, for example Kees condition, instead he deconstructs it. Finally, through DAKA, postcolonial studies can be used even though DAKA is set during the colonization era in the Indies. This means that postcolonial can speak beyond a specific time and space—when colonisation was still going on, before, or after.

Abstract

English has been widely known as a global lingua franca. By mastering English, it enables students to build good communication on a global scale and assists them to express their interests in many sectors such as economy, politics, culture, and education (Pennycook, 2025). These interests definitely influence students’ motivation in studying English. Therefore, this research aimed to investigate the discourse of students’ self-learning motivation in English by exploring both motivational factors, i.e., intrinsic and extrinsic factors. In doing this scientific work, the researchers applied Cresswell's (2016) convergent parallel mixed-method design that variedly provided both qualitative and quantitative data. With these various data, it helped the readers to comprehend the research explanation. The results demonstrated that both intrinsic and extrinsic factors have contributive aspects in maintaining students’ motivation in English learning. For instance, for the intrinsic factors, 60% of students are motivated to study English to gain a job, while self-confidence development and the pursuit of gaining a good academic score are equally 20%. In addition, the extrinsic factors consist of several conditions, i.e., educational (i.e., provided material with 13.3% voters and technological devices (TD) as learning facilities with 73.3% voters) and social (family support with 13.3% voters) conditions. Although intrinsic factors (66.7%) exert a more significant influence than extrinsic factors (33.3%), it is undeniable that both substantially impact students' self-learning motivation in English. Therefore, by investigating both of these factors, the researchers expected that it would help the educators to design the effective teaching curriculum in the English course.

Abstract

A developing discussion over the effects of Artificial Intelligence (AI) on students' critical thinking skills has emerged with their introduction into the classroom. Even if AI can provide several advantages, some worries depending too much on these technologies could impede the growth of critical thinking abilities. This research aims to analyze how students perceive the influence of AI on their critical thinking abilities. This research is descriptive qualitative research that involves collecting data from direct interviews. The respondents are 15 (fifteen) students from the English Literature study program, Letter Faculty, Sawerigading University Makassar. The research found that students perceive the following impact of AI use on their critical thinking abilities: 1) Hindering the development of critical thinking skills. 2) Assisting in the retrieval of information, data analysis, and the resolution of everyday issues. 3) Causing dependence on technology. 4) Helping to evaluate the information quickly; 5) Exploring alternative ideas; and 6) Improving reasoning ability. Overall, we need to balance the use of AI while prioritizing students' critical thinking. It is important to encourage students to use AI responsibly and judiciously, while also emphasizing the importance of critically evaluating the information provided by AI systems.

Abstract

This research presents the design of a multidimensional profiling framework to support adaptive and personalized English language learning at Universitas Terbuka (UT). A qualitative research method was used in designing the profiling framework. Data were collected through focus group discussions (FGDs) and institutional observations to examine the current realities within the university. Thematic analysis was then employed to interpret the data. Two key results were a learner profiling framework and an institutional readiness mapping. The framework included four phases: (1) Input: collecting data on learners’ digital readiness, learning styles, English proficiency, and self-regulated learning; (2) Processing: analyzing the data to create learner profiles; (3) Adaptation: using profiles to suggest personalized support; and (4) Interpretation: presenting results through dashboards and feedback tools. The institutional mapping found that each phase required a clear governance structure to ensure ethical use, transparency, and alignment with Universitas Terbuka’s policies and stakeholder capacities.
