Digital learning has existed since 2000, but in that year digital learning was not as advanced as in 2020. In 2020, digital learning has taken place in the field of education because today's technology can be accessed very easily. However, the problem that often arises is that teachers do not use internet digital media for the learning and assessment process. To address the existing gaps, this study is trying to investigate the current implementation of Google Form as online vocabulary assessment in English teaching and compare to the traditional vocabulary assessment. To reach that purpose, this study applied quasi-experimental study design. The population of the study class VIII Students of SMP N 9 Semarang in 2021/2022. The writers took two classes as control class and experimental class. There are two types of instrument tests given, namely pre-test and post-test. The result of the study reveals that there is a significant difference in the vocabulary mastery between those taught using Google Form as online vocabulary mastery and those taught using traditional vocabulary assessment. This is proved by the t-test result in which its value is greater than the t-table. This result implies that Google Form can be an alternative vocabulary assessment during the online and blended English teaching and learning process.

Some changes occur in the assessment process in the English teaching and learning process during the pandemic Covid-19. The integration of technology in the assessment process becomes a crucial need for the English teachers to run the online or blended English teaching. For that reason, this present study presents the the current implementation of online formative assessment in private and public junior high school in Semarang and the challenges that the English teachers face during the implementation. In this study, the writers carried out descriptive qualitative research design in which it used observation and an interview as the instruments. Two English teachers were involved in this study. The findings show that the implementation of online formative assessment runs well in both private and public junior high school. It is proved by the use of some online formative assessment tools during English teaching and learning such as Quizizz, Google Form, Socrative, Kahoot!, and Microsoft Teams routinely. On the other hand, during the implementation of online formative assessment, the English teachers also face some problems; students’ academic dishonesty and teachers’ poor computer skills. Finally, it is suggested that the English teachers need to improve their computer and digital literacy for supporting the implementation of online formative assessments during the online and blended English teaching.

This paper presents the result of a small-scale research which was aimed to find out a model of incorporating character values in English classroom of elementary schools. The government is now campaigning character education that should be incorporated in all subjects through direct and indirect teaching. For subjects such as English, character values need not be taught directly in class, but they are infused during the prosess of teaching and learning. The question arose among the teachers is how to incorporate character values in the subjects of which content is not particularly set to teaching moral values. The proposed model in this study is by using mini drama performance. The research took place at 4 elementary schools (ES) in Semarang municipality, consisting of 3 public schools and 1 private school. The data were collected from observation and interview with the teachers. The field notes and the results of interview were analyzed descriptively to to portray the existing model of teaching English in general, and teaching character values in particular.

The integration of higher-order thinking skills (HOTS) in language learning assessments has become a crucial issue in 21st-century learning. However, not many teachers are aware of the need to incorporate HOTS in assessments due to their insufficient knowledge and the absence of good examples. Further, there is not much research and literature on HOTS-based formative assessment that can be used as references. This research aims to fill the existing gap by providing a model of higher-order thinking skills (HOTS)-based formative assessments for English learning, especially in junior high schools. By employing research and development design, this research describes the validation of the assessment model. The proposed model of assessment may be used as a prototype for assessing language learning.

Technology integration in language assessment has been regarded as a common strategy in an educational setting. However, teachers need to adjust the perception and cogency of assessment in an online setting as well as the concept of formative assessment in online environments. This research aimed to investigate the students' perception of online backchannel implementation as a formative assessment in improving the students' writing skills in an English classroom. For this purpose, a mixed-method was applied with a closed-ended questionnaire distributed to 32 students and semi-structured interviews carried out to 24 students at the eighth-grade students of a state junior high school in Semarang, Central Java, Indonesia. The collected data were then analyzed quantitatively using SPSS 23 and qualitatively. The findings revealed positive perceptions of online backchannel implementation as a formative assessment in improving their writing skills. They considered it a new and innovative process of an assessment that helped them get the maximum result of writing. Furthermore, students' motivation and confidence in writing were raised. This study's implication calls for the implementation of online backchannel in English class as a formative assessment during the writing process.

The effect of tests on the teaching and learning, generally known as washback, has been recognized by scholars for a long time. However, studies on washback are usually addressed for high-stakes testing. This study investigates the washback effect of low-stakes test namely performance-based test used in measuring reading skills. Such a test is low stakes because it does not bring about serious consequence on the part of the students. The subjects of the research were 10 English teachers and 50 students of junior high schools in Semarang, Central Java, Indonesia. Data were collected through semi-structured interview and a questionnaire for both the teachers and students. The results showed that performance-based test gives positive effect in reading for the EFL learners in the areas of: students’ enthusiasm in reading, reducing boredom in reading, students’ curiosity on reading text content, and students’ improvement on higher-order thinking skills. To the teachers it affects the areas of teaching methods, teaching materials, and time allotment.

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui peningkatan penguasaan grammar pada materi should for obligation dengan menggunakan teknik make a match pada siswa kelas X IPS 1 SMA Negeri 1 Semarang. Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian tindakan kelas. Penelitian ini dilaksanakan di SMA Negeri 1 Semarang. Subjek penelitian ini adalah siswa kelas X IPS 1 SMA Negeri 1 Semarang yang berjumlah 36 siswa. Penelitian ini dilaksanakan dalam dua siklus. Masing-masing siklus dilaksanakan dalam dua pertemuan. Instrumen penelitian yang digunakan meliputi lembar observasi, lembar penilaian tes. Teknik analisis data dalam penelitian ini mencakup proses tindakan kelas yang dilakukan secara kualitatif dan hasil analis tindakan yang berupa skor secara kuantitatif. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa skor rata-rata sebelum tindakan saat proses pembelajaran dalam materi should for obligation belum memenuhi KKM. Setelah diterapkannya teknik Make A Match, terjadi peningkatan proses pembelajaran dalam materi should for obligation. Hal tersebut ditunjukkan dengan meningkatnya skor grammar siswa dari sebelum tindakan dan sesudah tindakan. Peningkatan persentase skor sebelum tindakan adalah 5% dan setelah tindakan meningkat menjadi 88%. Dengan demikian, dengan menggunakan teknik Make A Match dapat meningkatkan penguasaan grammar pada siswa kelas X IPS 1 SMA Negeri 1 Semarang pada materi should for obligation.

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk meningkatkan penguasaan grammar siswa pada materi Future Tenses dengan menggunakan Cards of the Future Game pada siswa kelas X SMA Negeri 1 Semarang tahun ajaran 2018/2019. Subjek dalam penelitian ini adalah siswa kelas x ips 2 sebanyak 36 anak. Jenis penelitian yang digunakan adalah penelitian tindakan kelas yang dilaksanakan dalam dua siklus. Setiap siklus dilaksanakan dalam dua pertemuan. Instrumen penelitian yang digunakan adalah observasi, wawancara, dan tes. Teknik analisis data dalam penelitian ini dilakukan secara kualitatif dan hasil dari tindakan yang berupa skor secara kuantitatif. Dari penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa skor dalam pretest pada pembelajaran Future Tenses tidak mencapai KKM. Dari hasil penelitian diperoleh presentase nilai dari pretest adalah 11,1% sedangkan pada posttest pertama dengan menggunakan Cards of the Future Game mengalami peningkatan menjadi 63.88%. Pada siklus kedua mengalami peningkatan menjadi 91.66% dan berdasarkan persentase nilai telah mengalami peningkatan dari siklus pertama dan siklus kedua. Oleh karena itu, disimpulkan bahwa Cards of the Future Game dapat meningkatkan penguasaan grammar siswa kelas X IPS 2 SMA Negeri 1 Semarang pada materi Future Tenses.

Desa Langse merupakan wilayah yang berada di lereng Pegunungan Pati Ayam di wilayah pinggiran Kabupaten Pati. Sebagian tanahnya tandus dan sebagian lagi tanah ladang yang hanya dapat ditanami palawija, jagung, kacang tanah, dan ketela pohon. Keadaan sosial ekonomi mereka masih rendah, apalagi di daerah lereng Pegunungan Pati Ayam, tanahnya berupa tanah ladang yang tidak subur, penduduknya tergolong miskin. Kemiskinan di daerah tersebut perlu segera mendapat penanganan. Pemerintah Kabupaten Pati bertekad meningkatkan kesejahteraan penduduk miskin melalui program pemberdayaan masyarakat. Metode yang digunakan untuk mengatasi permasalahan adalah dengan melakukan pendekatan strategis program yang dilakukan dalambeberapatahap,yaitu indentifikasi masalah, Sosialisasi program, Program Penyuluhan dan Pelatihan, Demonstrasi Plotting/Pelatihan. Hasil yang diperoleh dari pelaksanaan pengabdian ini adalah meningkatnya taraf kehidupan masyarakat desa Langse, salah satunya meningkatnya pendapatan harian dari 25 ribu rupiah menjadi 40 ribu rupiah per hari.

Kebutuhan akan guru yang professional tidak dapat dihindari pada era sekarang ini. Para guru diharapkan mampu untuk meningkatkan profesionalisme mereka melalui beberapa kegiatan akademik. Salah satu kegiatan akademik tersebut adalah mempublikasikan artikel akademik mereka dalam sebuah jurnal nasional. Sayangnya, masih banyak guru yang memiliki pengetahuan terbatas akan bagaimana menyusun dan mempublikasikan artikel akademik dalam sebuah jurnal. Hal ini dikarenakan mereka tidak memiliki informasi terkini terkait sistem dalam publikasi jurnal. Terlebih lagi, kebanyakan jurnal sekarang ini menggunakan sistem jurnal terbuka (OJS) yang juga tidak dipahami oleh para guru. Menyadari hal tersebut, kegiatan pelatihan ini bertujuan agar guru bahasa mampu dalam menyusun dan mempublikasikan artikel akademik mereka dalam jurnal. Dengan melibatkan delapan puluh satu (81) guru Sekolah Menengah Atas (SMA) di Semarang, PKM ini dilaksanakan dalam tiga rangkaian kegiatan yang terstruktur. Kegiatan tersebut dilaksanakan dalam bentuk pelatihan di mana guru diberikan pengetahuan akan struktur artikel akademik dan OJS yang diikuti dengan pelatihan menulis artikel dan menggunakan aplikasi Mendeley. Hasil dari kegiatan pengabdian masyarakat ini menunjukkan bahwa guru yang berpartisipasi menyatakan puas dan termotivasi dalam menulis artikel akademik. Terlebih lagi beberapa dari mereka akhirnya berhasil mempublikasikan artikel mereka dalam jurnal-jurnal nasional. Hasil tersebut mengindikasikan bahwa PKM yang dilaksanakan oleh tim dari Universitas PGRI Semarang memberikan dampak pada peningkatan profesionalisme guru dan mengarah pada guru-guru yang berkualitas di Indonesia.
