Abstract

Abstract: The purpose of this study was to determine the level of third semester students’ ability in mastering simple present tense using a Yell Video technique. The research method used was a Classroom Action Research (CAR). The research data included the results of the pre test and post test regarding the simple present tense. The data collection techniques used were classroom observation, interviews, notes, pre test and post test. The results of this study indicated that the use of a Yell Video can improve students' ability to understand the simple present tense.

Abstract

This study focused on the use of peer teaching technique to improve students’ mastery on present perfect tense. The research method used was a Classroom Action Research (CAR). The research data included the results of the pre-test and post-test regarding the present perfect tense. The data collection techniques used were classroom observation, interviews, pre-test, and post-test. The results of this study showed that the average score of students was 31.2 in pretest, increased from 60.7 in Cycle I to 88.3 in Cycle II. It indicated that the use of peer teaching technique could improve students' understanding in mastering the present perfect tense. This technique can be one of the effective ways for lecturers in teaching tenses especially present perfect tense.

Abstract

Abstract: The aims of this study was to describe the learning atmosphere when the implementation of Web-based learning materials and to find out how the improvement of the students’ basic skill during the implementation of Web-based learning materials. This was classroom action research type of research. The participants of this research were the Business Administration students of State Polytechnic Bengkalis. This research was conducted in two cycles by following the procedure of action research, i.e. planning, implementing, observing, and reflecting. In collecting the data, the researcher used observation, interview, questionnaire, and test. The data were analyzed qualitatively and quantitatively. The qualitative data were analyzed using Interactive Model of Data Analysis as propounded by Matthew M. Miles and A.M. Huberman. The results of the research showed that the learning atmosphere also improved. The class became more active, confident, and enjoyable. Furthermore, a Web-based learning material was able to improve the students’ Basic English Skill. It was proven by the increase of the students’ mean score from 41.22 in pre-test to 46.74 in cycle 1, and 49.92 in cycle 2. This result shows that the use of Web-based learning materials has proven to be an effective way in teaching-learning of Basic English skill.

Abstract

Toeic test is one of the requirements to graduate at State Polytechnic Bengkalis. To pass in Toeic test, some of students get difficulties to pass the passing grade. The aim of this study is to find out students’ difficulties in listening to Toeic tests and how to overcome the problem. This study found that students’ ability in listening comprehension on Toeic test was average category from 11 students by 36.7%. Then students ‘difficulties in Toeic tests Picture description (used similar sound answered agree by 50%), question response (the speech rate answered agree by 53.3%), short conversation (unfamiliar word answered strongly agree by 53.5%), short talks (can easily miss the text answered agree by 43.3%).

Abstract

This study aims to know the improvement of students’ grammar mastery by using Teacher Correction technique. The research method used was a Classroom Action Research (CAR). The research data included the results of the pretest and posttest regarding noun clauses. The data collection techniques used were classroom observation, interviews, pretest and posttest. The results of this study showed that the average score of students was 24.6 in pretest, increased from to in Cycle I to 39.2 in 69.2 II. It indicated that the use of Teacher Correction technique could improve students' understanding in mastering noun clauses. This technique can be one of effective ways for teachers or lecturers to teach noun clauses.
