Abstract

Technological developments in the 21st-century impacted teaching and learning English. one of the impacts of this technological development is reading activities and competencies, reading experienced a phase of change from printed text to digital text. The change from Printed text to digital text requires new literacies, such as locating information and synthesizing online information. This study aims to investigate teachers' perceptions of reading digital texts in ELT. About twenty-three ELT teachers, both in junior and senior high schools around East Java, were involved in this study. An online open questionnaire was distributed to portray ELT teachers' attitudes, knowledge, and practices in reading digital text. The study reveals that all teachers have a positive attitude toward the practice of reading digital text. However, most teachers have misconceptions about knowledge and practice in implementing reading digital text activities.  Surprisingly, all teachers in this study claimed that they never received a particular workshop to read digital text activities for English class.  Hopefully, this study's result could contribute to the ELT curriculum in responding to the need to facilitate the new literacy in (online) reading and teacher professional development to develop teachers' reading digital text competencies. However, teachers as facilitators in classroom learning activities must recognize new literacy in online reading (especially reading digital text) to help students achieve reading competence in today's digital-based information era.

Abstract

Learning theory is a very fundamental, systematic and comprehensive understanding of the process of how people particularly students, learn. Learning theory is much influenced by psychological theories. One of them is behaviorism theory. This theory believes that learning is a change in a person's behavior and that behavior can be observable and measured.  This article aims to discuss the key concept in behaviorism, important figures in behaviorism, and how it is implemented in learning activity in the classroom. There are four concepts of behaviorism theory that are formulated by different psychologists; connectionism, classical conditioning, contiguous conditioning and operant conditioning.  Every concept has different perspective on how the process of behavior change as a result of learning. However, in their implementation of activities, they have the same focus on learning activities; stimulus and response. The discussion of this paper starts with the key concept of behaviorism from different experts. Then, followed by how behaviorism implemented in the learning which can be in the form of teaching activities and assessment. Learning activities that may be the implementation of behavioristic theory include learning using PowerPoint and multimedia, or evaluation of learning that requires true and false answers /yes or no question. This paper is expected to give a clear insight for educators in understanding and implementing behaviorism as psychological theory of learning.

Abstract

This research aims to investigate pre-service teachers' perceptions of using Grammarly software to help them check their essays' problems. The study considers the widespread use of AI in English language learning, particularly in writing. The research method used in this paper was a quantitative survey. The instrument used was a questionnaire. 36 English Pre-service teachers from two state universities and one private university in Jember were involved in this study. The findings show a positive response based on five aspects of perception: belief, knowledge, feeling, interest, and motivation. Based on the data, 18-24 participants agree, and 2-12 participants strongly agree with the statement. This data means that more than half of the respondents positively perceive using Grammarly software in essay writing. The belief aspect is the highest frequency (65.3% of respondents agree). This data means that students mostly believe that using Grammarly can help them improve their writing skills and solve their writing problems. On the other hand, the motivation aspect received the lowest response, with less than half (48.6%) agreeing. Therefore, this study recommends that English language education programs emphasize the importance of AI in learning, particularly Grammarly.

Abstract

This study explores students' in-depth perceptions of the use of folklore in narrative text learning, considering the lack of studies discussing this topic. This study employed a qualitative approach with a case study design, conducted at SMA Negeri Arjasa Jember. The research participants consisted of five tenth graders who were selected purposively based on two criteria: having adequate verbal communication skills to express their thoughts and having previous learning experiences related to the use of folklore in narrative texts in English lessons. Data were collected through interviews and analyzed using data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion-drawing techniques by Miles & Huberman. The results showed that students had a positive perception of the integration of folklore, which was considered to improve motivation, engagement, understanding of local culture, and mastery of contextual language. However, limited vocabulary and difficulty in comprehending English structure still pose an obstacle to achieving mastery of past tenses in English. These findings open up opportunities for further research that examines the effectiveness of scaffolding strategies in helping students overcome linguistic gaps when learning narrative texts based on local culture.
