Abstract

Queer as a gender identity draws varying responses globally. In French the representation of Queer in various social media has raised a number of public’s perceptions, both in positive and negative manners. This perception does not only concern about French linguistic issues, but also its socio-cultural issues. This study puts an emphasis on the widely-used speech patterns showing the public perception on both French queer and immigrant queers posted on French social media. Further, it also examines the socio-cultural context that influences the social contact and relation between the public and the phenomenon of Queer as a subject in social media. This study uses interactionist approach and gender-based critical discourse analysis based on the theory of interpersonal contact between groups proposed by Gordon Allport. In explaining the phenomenon, the researcher employs qualitative content analysis and uses criticial discourse analysis and gender-based criticism. The data are collected from both French and immigrant queers’ posts on social media in 2020. The results show that French queers are perceived to have equal standing position with other French people as they are considered as a part of French society. The result also shows that unlike French queer, the immigrant-descent queer are considered to have inequal position with French society due to the immigrant’s negative stereotype as the trigger of social problems in France.

Abstract

The concept of secularism or laicité is expressed in political discourses in various ways by the French presidential candidates in the 2017 campaign. Both candidates, Emmanuel Macron (EM) and Marine Le Pen (MLP) used specific forms and lingual expressions to explain secularism and national identity, especially those related to ‘Islam’, ‘immigration’ and ‘terrorism’. This study uses critical discourse analysis linked to their parties’ ideologies based on identity, activities, goals, norms, and values. In the discourses presented by EM and MLP, Islam is associated with religion, Muslims, jihad, Islamic fundamentalists, the burqa, and secularism. The results of discourse analysis show that EM’s and MLP’s discourses on secularism and Islam are notably different. MLP views secularism in France as being under threat due to external threats, namely immigrants and in particular Muslim immigrants. In contrast, EM views secularism as a concept to support and protect the identity of the nation and to support and to add to the diversity of French culture and identity. The findings of this research is that French concepts of national identities, which is closely related to secularism, correlates to the ideologies of the respective presidential candidates’ parties. The relationships between the parties’ ideologies, national identities, and discourses investigated in this research can be used as a methodology for political discourses, especially French political discourses.

Abstract

Immigration has been an integral part of American history, drawing the attention of every one to the country's presidents, including the incumbent Donald J. Trump. President Trump is known to have been quite "frank" in conveying his views of immigrants and immigration, as well as his perspectives regarding their positive and negative aspects. This qualitative descriptive study aims to analyze the view about immigrants and immigration conveyed through President Trump's speeches on immigration policy. Using Fairclough's three-dimensional framework for its analysis, it finds that President Trump's ideology is reflected in several textual aspects of his speeches, including their transitivity, mood, modality, and thematic structure. These practices highlight the involvement of other actors in drafting these speeches, which offer a discourse on immigrants and immigration that marginalizes previous policies. Keywords: Critical Discourse Analysis, Immigrants Immigration, Ideology, Trump, Policy.

Abstract

Increased immigration, especially from Muslim-majority countries, has been broadly debated in French socio-political life. Frictions have been common between two groups: Muslims and non-Muslims who identify themselves as ‘defenders of secularism.’ At the same time, however, hybrid strategies have emerged in which Muslims and non-Muslims have sought to culturally and socially adapt themselves. Through a review of online French media published between 2017 and 2020, as understood using social constructivism, this study explores the groups’ construction of hybrid identities. Discourses were analyzed to identify their ideological schemes, utterances, references, and arguments, with linguistic analysis facilitated by NVIVO software. Analysis shows that the hybrid discourses of non-Muslim ‘defenders of secularism’ have been more prominent than those of Muslims. Furthermore, the narrative tendencies of these hybrid discourses indicate that non-Muslim groups have sought to promote diversity in religious practices in France, while Muslim groups have sought to integrate themselves into broader French society.

Abstract

Language as a part of the study of communication is often used to build individuals' "image," especially amongst people (such as YouTubers) who are well known to the public. In linguistics, one's use of specific language to express oneself is called one's language style. Language styles serve as "signs," through which users create concepts of themselves and their personalities. As such, individuals' language styles usually have specific purposes and functions. This study will examine the language style used by Cyprien, a French media YouTuber, and its functions using the theory of Catherine Fromilhague using qualitative approach. Its corpus draws on data from Cyprien's five most popular videos (as ascertained based on the number of viewers), which were accessed through YouTube media. The data were obtained by viewing these videos and noting the utterances and language styles used. Afterward, data were classified and analyzed based on the language style used and its function. This research finds that eleven language styles were used, with different frequencies. These styles served argumentative, ornamental, and cognitive functions. The conclusion of this study are used to draw viewers' interest and stave off boredom, thereby ensuring that they are willing to follow Cyprien's channel. At the same time, these language styles are used for a range of purposes, including emphasizing essential points and creating rhythm.

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to explore the memory and the trajectory of the Javanese diaspora on the novels written by two female authors of Javanese descent in New Caledonia using a gender perspective. The Javanese diaspora in New Caledonia is a community that has left their homeland (Java) to start a new life in their destination land (New Caledonia) since 1896. They are descendants of the contract coolies (laborers) sent by the Dutch colonial government who controlled the Dutch Indies, including Java, at the request of French colonial government. The delivery of contract coolies was based on an agreement called the “Koeli Ordonatie” which had become a legal regulation and was implemented since the 1880s. It was a regulation signed by the Governor-General of the Netherlands Number 138 whose purpose was to fid unskilled laborers willing to work in the Dutch colonies, especially in the plantations and mining. The coolies, especially from Java, were mostly used as manual laborers in various parts of Dutch colonies, such as in Suriname. Seeing that this Dutch policy brought positive results for the exploitation of natural resources in the Dutch colonies, the French colonial government asked the help from the Dutch colonial government to recruit the laborers to be sent to French colonial region, New Caledonia.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to map the vulnerable Javanese language in the Special Region of Yogyakarta, namely in the City of Yogyakarta and in the regencies of Sleman, Gunungkidul, Kulon Progo, and Bantul. Furthermore, it seeks to understand the role of different agents in preserving the Javanese language in those areas. Due to the dominating use of Indonesian language, the Javanese language has decreased in usage in various modes of communication in schools especially Jawa krama (medium-register variety). Making this language vulnerability mapping is important to locate in the context of the region, the language vulnerability that occurs more than other regions. This mapping can be used by the policy makers to strengthen the Javanese language used in the regions. A geographic information system was used to map the language's vulnerability in this region. The findings of this research are, first, there is an even distribution of the level of language vulnerability throughout the region, especially in the declining usage of Jawa krama. Second, schools no longer serve as agents in the preservation of the usage and competence of the Javanese language, especially Jawa krama. Third, family and social environments still hold potential for the preservation of the Javanese language, although mostly for Jawa ngoko.
