Abstract

There is no doubt that having good characters is essential to everyone in society. Character is even a major consideration in the world of education. For this reason, character building is considered important to be explored. By using entertainment media such as movie, this library research concentrates on the character building symbolized through the American animation films Frozen (2013) and Frozen II (2019). Besides the main data from the films, reference sources in the form of books and journals were also used for analysis. Hall’s theory of representation was applied to analyze the data gathered for this study such as dialogs and the description of scenes from the films to identify how the character building is represented through the films as well as to understand the essence of character building. The result showed that the animation films observed in this study can represent good characters through seven values such as bravery, politeness, sacrifice, empathy, curiosity, confidence, and caring. Additionally, this study also reveals that the concept of character is associated with life values, morality and attitude and therefore, character building is significant to shape people with quality in order to create peace and harmony in society. Through this study, it expected that the findings can contribute to the development of the theory in humanities and education and it can provide better understanding to people about character building through American animated films.

Abstract

Abstract As one of the important things in human life, friendship is an essential discussion because it is experienced by almost all people. Moreover, the portrait of friendship has been frequently shown in films. Therefore, this study aims to identify how friendship is depicted in the film Aladdin (2019) and to analyze the significance of friendship for people. It is expected that this study can contribute in the form of theory development in social and cultural studies and help people understand the value of friendship. The picture of friendship that appears in the film in the form of dialogs was used as the main data to be analyzed in this study. By applying representation theory as a semiotic approach, film dialogs were treated as symbols that could be interpreted. The result of analysis reveals that the representation of friendship in the Aladdin can be seen through the three main concepts – the sense of care, mutuality and solidarity which are considered significant in friendship. Furthermore, the result also reveals that everyone can interpret friendship based on their experience. This also affects the purpose of friendship. Abstract

This study aims to analyze the concept of masculinity in the gay male community and identify the image of masculinity in gay men shown in the American gay television series. Data for this qualitative research was gathered from several American gay TV series in the 2000s. The data analysis process involved representation theory in interpreting the dialogs and the scenes in the television series. The study found that masculinity does not always have to be associated with physical strength and heterosexuality because there are other essential aspects such as the ability to achieve success and to meet the needs of life that can be used to conceptualize masculinity. It also revealed that American gay television series frequently showed the representation of masculinity in gay characters to reject the stereotype through images such as physical strength in sports, attractive physical appearance, profession, and ability to achieve success.

Abstract

Andaliman is one of the many spice plants native to North Sumatra and is known to have many benefits as a pain reliever, anti-inflammatory, cough medicine, rheumatism, and back pain. In this study, a series of test was done to  identify for steroid compounds from the fraction of methanol andaliman extract (Zanthoxylum acanthopodium DC) by using thin layer chromatography. This study was designed to determine the presence of terpenoid/steroid compounds in the andaliman (Zanthoxylum acanthopodium DC) extract . Extraction was carried out using by maceration method  using methanol as solvent, followed by phytochemical test and confirmation test using TLC (Thin Layer Chromatography) namely GF254 plate as stationary phase, mixture of n-hexane:ethyl acetate with ratio of 7:3 as mobile phase,the appearance of the stains were carried out on UV with wavelenghts of 254 nm and 366 nm and by spraying Liebermann Burchard reagent as a spot viewer. The results of the phytochemical screening analysis on the Andaliman extract showed that the methanol andaliman extract contained steroid compounds and the TLC analysis showed a blue color, which was the result of a fraction indicating the presence of steroids and a pink color indicating the presence of terpenoids. The smallest terpenoid Rf stain was 0 cm and the highest Rf was 0.92 cm, while the smallest steroid Rf stain was 0 cm and the highest Rf was 0.71cm. Therefore, the Rf value for terpenoids, which is the result of the fraction of ethyl acetate and the Rf value of steroids, which is the result of the fraction of n-hexane and ethyl acetate, has met the requirements for a good Rf value between 0.2 to 0.8.Keywords: Andaliman; Steroids; Fractionation; Thin layer chromatography.                                                                   AbstrakAndaliman merupakan salah satu dari sekian banyak tanaman rempah asli Sumatera Utara dan diketahui memiliki banyak khasiat sebagai pereda nyeri, antiinflamasi, obat batuk, rematik, dan sakit punggung. Pada penelitian ini dilakukan uji identifikasi steroid fraksi metanol andaliman (Zanthoxylum acanthopodium DC) secara kromatografi lapis tipis. Penelitian ini dirancang untuk mengetahui adanya senyawa terpenoid/steroid dalam fraksi ekstrak metanol andaliman (Zanthoxylum acanthopodium DC). Proses ekstraksi dilakukan dengan metode maserasi menggunakan metanol sebagai pelarut, dilanjutkan dengan uji fitokimia dan uji konfirmasi menggunakan KLT (Kromatografi Lapis Tipis) yaitu plat GF254 sebagai fase diam, campuran n-heksan:etil asetat dengan perbandingan 7:3 sebagai fase gerak, penampakan noda dilakukan pada UV dengan panjang gelombang 254 nm dan 366 nm serta dengan penyemprotan pereaksi Lieberman Buchard sebagai penampak bercak. Hasil analisa skrinning fitokimia pada ekstrak andaliman menunjukkan bahwa ekstrak metanol andaliman mengandung senyawa steroid dan pada hasil analisa KLT menunjukkan warna biru yaitu hasil fraksi yang menampakkan adanya steroid dan warna merah muda yang menampakkan adanya terpenoid. Noda Rf  terpenoid terkecil adalah 0 cm dan Rf tertinggi 0,92 cm, sedangkan noda Rf steroid terkecil 0 cm dan Rf terbesar 0,71cm. Oleh karena itu, nilai Rf untuk terpenoid yaitu hasil fraksi dari etil asetat dan nilai Rf steroid yaitu hasil fraksi dari n-heksana dan etil asetat telah memenuhi syarat nilai Rf yang baik adalah di antara 0,2 sampai 0,8.Kata kunci: Andaliman; Steroid; Fraksinasi; Kromatografi Lapis Tipis.

Abstract

The study focuses on the influence of one of the prominent figures in American romanticism, Ralph Emerson. By applying the Hall’s Theory of Representation this study intends to identify the role of Self-Reliance in American culture and the impact of Emerson’s philosophy toward American life And now people all over the world have recognized his work Self-Reliance (1841) as the inspiration in many aspects of life. His hard work, ethical teaching and spirit have become the most important ideas in shaping independent American society. Through his literary works, Emerson has conveyed important messages to the world on shaping personalities.

Abstract

During the pandemic time, almost all educational institutions implement online learning system for their students. This research aims at identifying the concept of online learning and analyzing the types of characteristics that can be formed through online learning. It is expected to contribute as a complement of theory in the fields of humanities, social sciences, and education. It can also be additional material for researchers who are interested in the topic of online learning. The data were obtained from the questionnaire responded by 22 students of the the 6th semester (morning class E) of FKIP UNPRI Medan and the reviewing of a number of relevant literature. As a conceptual analysis study, the data were analyzed by using representation theory to interpret the concept of online learning and its impact which could symbolize certain meanings. The result of analysis suggested that the term “online learning” can basically be conceptualized as a learning system emphasizing freedom which could show efficiency and innovation. The result of analysis also revealed that there were three types of characteristics – curiosity, facing challenges and a sense of responsibility that can be formed as a result of online line study which is considered to contribute to character building.

Abstract

With the purpose of understanding the pandemic issue that is currently experienced by almost all countries, this library research examines American films with a pandemic theme to find out the reason for using this theme in films and to identify the symbol of pandemic shown in the films. By observing the dialogs and scenes in Outbreak (1995), I am Legend (2007), Carriers (2009), Contagion (2011), and The World War Z (2013), this textual analysis study utilizes the theory of representation to interpret the pandemic in the films. The results showed that the pandemic issue can be considered a promising theme because the concept of the theme includes interesting scenes such as the emergence of infectious disease, rapid virus transmission, high mortality rates, and challenges in overcoming pandemic. These scenes form a pattern – confusion, panic, emergency, survival, and treatment that can be the hallmark of a pandemic-themed film. In addition, the results of the study also suggested that films about pandemics can symbolize the reality of human’s life which is reflected through the portraits of greed, heroism, and hope.

Abstract

This study focuses on the relationship between fashion and the gay community by observing the 2000s American TV series with gay characters as the protagonists. It intends to explain the way fashion is portrayed and its significance for gay culture. It can contribute to theory enrichment in cultural, literary and media studies. It would also increase people’s knowledge about fashion in and for the gay culture. This research incorporated the main data in the form of dialogues as well as pictures of scenes showing fashion worn by the gay characters obtained from Will Grace (1998-2006), Queer as Folk (2000-2005), Six Feet Under (2001-2005), and Some of My Best Friends (2001). By applying Hall’s representation theory to analyze the data, this study discovers that the gay protagonists in the 2000s gay-themed American TV series are portrayed as fashionable people, who think of fashion as their pride. However, the fashion used in portraying gay characters has shifted from the effeminate looks that are mostly composed of women’s clothes. Instead, they are still seen concerning with their appearance, but their exploration of fashion is sticking to men’s clothes. This portrayal has two essential significances for the gay community. It affirms the modish of their identity, while at the same time refusing the feminine stereotype.

Abstract

AbstrakPenelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui pengaruh keadilan organisasi terhadap kepuasan kerja karyawan pada PT. Aneka Bintang Sejati Labelindo Medan. Hipotesis yang akan diajukan dalam penelitian ini adalah adanya pengaruh antara keadilan organisasi terhadap kepuasan kerja pada karyawan PT. Aneka Bintang Sejati Labelindo Medan. Subjek dalam penelitian ini berjumlah 125 karyawan PT. Aneka Bintang Sejati Labelindo Medan dengan menggunakan teknik yaitu total sampling. Penelitian yang kami lakukan menggunakan metode kuantitatif, data penelitian ini menggunakan skala kepuasan kerja dengan 35 butir aitem dan skala keadilan organisasi dengan 24 butir aitem. Perhitungan dilakukan dengan uji asumsi yaitu uji normalitas dan linearitas. Analisis data yang digunakan adalah korelasi Pearson Product Moment dengan bantuan IBM SPSS Statistics 23 for windows. Hasil data yang dianalisis memperlihatkan koefisien korelasi sebesar 0.930 dengan sig. 0.000 (p 0,05). Hasil sumbangan yang diberikan variabel keadilan organisasi terhadap kepuasan kerja adalah 86,4 persen, selebihnya 13,6 persen dipengaruhi oleh unsur lain yang tidak dipelajari dalam penelitian ini. Menurut hasil pembahasan ini dapat disimpulkan bahwa hipotesis penelitian menunjukkan adanya korelasi jelas yang signifikan antara keadilan organisasi terhadap kepuasan kerja.Kata Kunci: Kepuasan kerja; Keadilan organisasi AbstractThis paper is to settle out the effect of organizational justice on employee job satisfaction at PT. Aneka Bintang Sejati Labelindo Medan. The hypothesis of this research is the influence of organizational justice on job satisfaction of employees of PT. Aneka Bintang Sejati Labelindo Medan. Subjects in this study were 125 employees of PT. Aneka Bintang Sejati Labelindo Medan by using a total sampling technique. This study used quantitative methods, research data using a job satisfaction scale with 35 items and an organizational justice scale with 24 items. The calculation was done by using testing assumptions, which is normality and linearity test. The data analysis we used is the Pearson Product Moment correlation with the help of IBM SPSS Statistics 23 for windows. The outcome of the data interpretation laid out a correlation coefficient of 0.930 with sig. 0.000 (p 0.05). The results of the contribution given by the justice variable to job satisfaction is 86.4 percent, the remaining 13.6 percent is affected by other things that were not inspect in this research. The conclusion of the research hypothesis shows that there is a significant positive correlation in the middle of organizational justice and job satisfaction.Keywords: Job satisfaction; Organizational justice

Abstract

Kegiatan Pengabdian Masyarakat ini menitikberatkan kepada peran pemahaman lintas budaya yang perlu diperkenalkan dan dipelajari kepada kaum muda terutama pelajar pada tingkat SMP dan SMA. Kegiatan ini bermanfaat untuk memberi pengetahuan kepada masyarakat terutama kaum muda (pelajar) tentang pentingnya pemahaman lintas budaya. Adapun tujuan pembahasan tema ini adalah untuk mengidentifikasi alasan pemahaman lintas budaya ini penting diterapkan bagi kaum pelajar. Pemahaman lintas budaya dapat dipandang sebagai sebuah program yang bisa diwujudkan dalam bentuk mata pelajaran atau program tambahan dalam sekolah. Pembahasan pemahaman lintas budaya menitikberatkan pada pentingnya program ini bagi kaum muda karena dapat memperluas wawasan mereka mengenai multikulturalisme dan nilai-nilainya yang dapat menumbuhkan toleransi. Di samping itu, dengan adanya pemahaman lintas budaya, kaum muda memiliki nilai tambah karena ini dapat dipandang sebagai salah satu kemampuan yang diperlukan dalam dunia kerja dan bisnis.
