Abstract

This study aims to determine the activity of the utilization of forest resources and to know local community wisdom related to protection forest in the Alu Village areas. This research was conducted by using Rapid Rural Appraisal (RRA) method. Respondents in this study were communities living in and around the protection forest area and conducting activities in the forms of utilizing the forest resources. The observed variables were the forms of community activities in the protection forest and local community wisdom in using the forest resources. The results show that activities of villagers consist of: 1) the use of timber for home construction or repair and for fuel wood, 2) the utilization of rattan, 3) the utilization of bamboo, 4) the utilization of palm, 5) the utilization of honey bee and other forest products. In addition, local community wisdom in the utilization of forest products was found to be in the form of prevailing institutions in the village of Alu. The forms of institutions are forest harvesting institutions, forest land use institutions, and forest protection and security institutions. In general, Alu Villagers have the awareness to preserve the environment, ecological balance and sustainability of the population to be bequeathed to their generation. Yet, the wisdom is prone to turn down particularly in the institution of timber utilization. Key words: Forest resource utilization, protected forest, local wisdom, Alu Villagers

Abstract

This study aims to explain how a peasant community makes decisions in response to recurring crises in order to maintain their farms, and the extent to which vulnerability contexts and (external) institutions influence peasants’ decision-making regarding their livelihoods. In doing so, we present a case study of the Village of Ranga, in the South Sulawesi Province, Indonesia, where data collected through semi-structured interviews, observation, and Focus Group Discussion (FGD). Data regarding farmers' livelihood strategies in responding to the crises, in the form of commodity booms and busts, is analyzed by employing a sustainable rural livelihoods framework, while a Chayanovian “balance” approach is used to understand peasants’ decision making and the extent to which they retain operations as ‘peasant farms’. We found that the most critical vulnerability that directly contributes to changes in the peasants' livelihood trajectories is successive shocks in the form of physical disturbances to plants and land. In making decisions regarding changes in livelihood strategies when facing crises, farmers seem to be pushed to abandon various balances they previously upheld, except to some extent the labor-consumption balance. This change potentially deepens the vulnerability of the Ranga Village peasants by adding more exposure to volatile markets and environmental pressure (such climate-induced hazards, pests, disease, and water crisis). This research can help us to understand the nature of the peasant responses in times of crises, and therefore help to inform the scanning of potential strategic measures for rural agricultural development in order to increase agricultural resilience.

Methods of field survey research interviewed 30 respondents with purposive sampling and plot measuring 20X20 m to determine ecological and economical productivity and statistical analysis to determine the diversity ecological and economic income. The results of the research show the diversity in Manimbahoi village of 1.2 and 1.3 and 1.3, respectively, are at a low level of diversity. Sicini village, 1.7 pole 1.5 trees are of medium diversity, while 1, 3 stakes are at a low level of diversity while from the questionnaire found acceptance of Agrosilvopastura management of the economical productivity of Manimbahoi and Sicini Village of Rp. 11,112,000 every month, the total revenue of agriculture sector and Sicini Village farm is Rp. 6,446,000 every month. Abstract

Agricultural businesses, including beef cattle farming, are prone to risks and losses. Partnerships provide many benefits and reduce the risk of business losses through market assurance, added value, and an increased portfolio of productive assets. The Bali cattle cluster is a place of centralized development in cattle breeding to enhance high competitiveness. The study aims to build a partnership model for managing the risk of the Bali cattle business in the Bali cattle purification cluster. The research used a survey method with a descriptive qualitative approach. The results showed two partnership models in the research location: the partnership of the livestock company and the traditional partnership. Business cooperation is established in partnership with farmers by dividing profits among 50% farmers, 45% companies, and 5% farmer-livestock groups. As for traditional partnerships, farmers and owners get 50% of the profits each. So, the two business models of beef cattle farming have advantages and disadvantages. The partnership system has a good impact on farmers in managing their business risks because farmers feel helped by these two partnerships in the research location, especially for farmers who still have minimal business capital in the Bali cattle business. Future research will be maximized if it increases the number of respondents and the size of the research area to detect agricultural partnership patterns in rural areas.
