Abstract

Mathematical representation ability (MRA) is crucial in solving mathematical problems, particularly in the topic of algebraic expressions. However, some students struggle to grasp algebraic forms in real-world circumstances. Learning through realistic mathematics education (RME) using context is one of the learning approaches that could help improve students' MRA. The objective of this study was to assess students' MRA in learning algebraic expressions through realistic mathematics education. This research employed mixed-method research with a sequential explanatory design. The subjects of this study were 27 seventh-grade students from a junior high school in Banda Aceh, Indonesia. Data on students' MRA were gathered through written test and task-based interviews. The descriptive analysis of written test data revealed that students' average score is 3.6, which is considered low compared to the maximum score of 8. The majority of students (n=24) satisfied the visual indicators of MRA as they successfully drew the composite shape. Whereas the most challenging MRA aspect for students to master was symbolic representation, only a few students (n=6) could solve the problem related to the multiplication of algebraic expressions. Students’ learning loss in the prerequisites due to online learning during the Covid-19 outbreak was one cause of the students' low performance on MRA.

Abstract

Ineffective learning during Covid-19 can be a major cause of learning loss. Through polytomous item response theory analysis, this study seeks to identify learning loss of fractions and investigate the reliability and validity of the DINA model diagnostic test. This study involved 177 Grade 8 students from six junior high schools in Banda Aceh, Indonesia, to obtain information about the validity and reliability of the diagnostic test and learning loss of fraction due to Covid-19. The research was conducted by designing diagnostic test, expert validation, and empirical testing. Multiple choice problems with polytomous options were developed. This study produced 20 valid problems based on the level of item discriminant, item difficulty, and slip and guess, with a reliability of 0.899. This study revealed that learning loss was experienced by 62 students from low-level junior high schools (100%), 51 students from middle-level junior high schools (98%), and 54 students from high-level junior high schools (85.7%). It can be said that low-level schools have the highest percentage of students with learning loss. It is recommended that future studies evaluate the effectiveness of diagnostic tests in identifying learning weaknesses in mathematics before semester exams using the items generated in this study.

Abstract

Individuals with low immune systems have a higher impact on the Covid-19 outbreak. Herbal treatment is one of the solutions to reduce the risk of being infected by the virus. However, the public has not yet fully known about herbal medicines in Indonesia. One of the efforts to increase students' knowledge about herbal medicine is by developing numeracy questions in the context of herbal medicine. This study aims to produce valid and reliable numeracy questions in the context of herbal medicine for junior high school students and to find student responses to numeracy questions in the context of herbal medicine. The research method used is a design research type of development study with a Tessmer development model. The results of the study were 16 numeric questions with the context of herbal medicines that were valid in terms of content, construct, and language based on the validator's assessment, while nine of the 16 questions met empirical validity. The numeration question set in the context of herbal medicine has a high-reliability value. Based on the students' responses, the set of questions developed positively impacted students. The teacher can use these questions as an instrument to train students' numeracy ability.
